The Nigerian Army has claimed that Abubakar Shekau, a factional leader of Islamist insurgent group, Boko Haram, was “fatally wounded” in an air attack carried out by the Nigerian Air Force.

In a statement released late yesterday, Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, said Mr. Shekau was wounded in an “unprecedented and spectacular air raid,” adding, “some key leaders of the Boko Haram terrorists have been killed while others were fatally wounded.”

“The air raid took place last week Friday 19th August 2016, while the terrorists were performing Friday rituals at Taye village, Gombale general area within Sambisa forest, Borno State,” Colonel Usman stated.

He added that the confirmed casualties among the Boko Haram commanders included Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman.

The military spokesman added that the Islamist group’s “leader, [the] so-called ‘Abubakar Shekau,’ is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders.”


SaharaReporters was unable to reach Colonel Usman to clarify what he meant by “fatally wounded,” since the phrase is confusing.

The Boko Haram sects are said to have sent the video to the President by an  intermediary, a Nigerian Journalist, Ahmad Salika in a bid to change the mind of Jonathan concerning his rejection of the original deal to swap the school girls for Boko haram prisoners.

It was yesterday reported that the President changed his mind at the last minute to 'Swap the girls' after warnings from Western countries at the security summit in Paris.

Apparently the Nigerian Journalist, Ahmad Salika who serves as an intermediary is the only Nigerian Journalist with access to Boko Haram was flown into the country some weeks back by the Nigerian government to facilitate negotiations between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram.

Ahmad Salkida who was reported to have told President Goodluck Jonathan that the use of force will not bring back the abducted girls alive from the Insurgent’s den obtained the video as a way of proving to Mr Jonathan’s office that he had authentic lines of communication to Boko Haram’s leaders.

Salkida who left the country two years ago to Dubai for fear of his live after being arrested in the past and associated with the sects as a result of his closeness to them, upon his return back to the country was said to have headed up into the remote bushland areas where the group operate, meeting a senior assistant of Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.

The Federal government still in doubt of Salkida asked for a prove, a source said:
“The government said to the intermediary to prove himself to show whether he was capable of brokering a deal or not, and insisted that he should obtain proof of life of the hostages,” the source said. “So during his talks with the insurgents, he obtained a DVD which had clips of girls being interviewed by members of the group, in which they asked President Jonathan to do a prisoner swap to get them freed.

“That DVD was shown to the government, and a deal was arranged so that the girls would have been released a week ago on Monday, but at last minute the government backed out.”

The Nigerian government aside pressure from Western countries at the security summit in Paris not to accept the Boko haram terrorists demand to 'Sap the girls', a source said that they appear to be afraid that "if they do a prisoner swap, they will lose the support of the West."

The source further said, the negotiations had now “crashed”, with Mr Salkida returning to Dubai while the DVD remains in the possession of the Nigerian government and has not been released publicly.

The Chinese embassy in Cameroon confirmed that 10 of its workers had gone missing on Friday at a site near the town of Waza, 12 miles from the Nigerian border and close to the Sambisa forest, a Boko Haram stronghold.

Lu Qingjiang, the embassy’s political counsellor, said that one Chinese worker was also injured in the attack, China’s Xinhua state news agency reported.

Ten vehicles belonging to China’s state-run construction company Sinohydro, which is repairing roads in Cameroon, were also taken, Xinhua said.


Mr Lu called on the Cameroonian authorities to “not put the lives of Chinese nationals missing in danger in case actions of liberation be launched”, Xinhua said.

The Muslim Council of Britain has offered to mediate in the Boko Haram insurgency in the light of the “Bring Back our Girls’’ global campaign.

The Council’s decision followed a meeting with the leadership of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK (CANUK) which had sought its support in the wake of increased assistance to Nigeria from the international community.

CANUK Chairman Mr Bimbo Afolayan confirmed the development to the Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in London on Friday during a protest outside the Nigerian High Commission.

Afolayan said that CANUK had met and deliberated on ways to offer assistance and support to government in curbing the insurgency.

“One of the things we resolved to do was to appeal to government to negotiate with Boko Haram to the extent of prisoner exchange.

“We also reached out to the Muslim Council of Great Britain and they have offered to intervene by holding talks with Boko Haram, we will pursue this seriously.”

He said that a security committee to advice government on long-term solutions to these problems had been set up.

“We need permanent solution, there is no point if the girls are released today and another group are abducted tomorrow.”

Also, Mrs Jenny Okafor a human rights activist and convener of the protest, said government should not rule out the possibility of negotiating with the group.


“It is over a month since these girls were abducted and they have been going through trauma, they need to be released, I want to thank the international community for offering to assist the Federal Government,” Okafor said. (NAN)

Lt. Col. N.U.V. Efik, Chief Security Officer of the University of Uyo, UNIUYO, in Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, confirmed that the institution was one of the targets picketed for attack by the radical Islamist sect- Boko Haram.

The CSO warned the students to be extra vigilant and security conscious as they resume the new academic session.

He said a letter has been sent to that effect to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Comfort Ekpo, and other high ranking officials of the institution.

The former military chief also warned members of the community to take security precautions.

The letter read in parts: "Intelligence reports received at this department indicate that the university has been earmarked as one of the major targets in the event of an attack in Akwa Ibom State.

"Consequently, every member of the university community is urged to please be security conscious, observant and report any suspicious movement or thing to the security officer nearest to him or her.

"As a pre-emptive measure to safeguard the university from attack, all small gates leading into both annex and town campuses would be closed to all between 12 noon and 3:00 pm every Friday.

"Members of the university community are advised to use the main gates during the period as other measures deemed necessary for the safety of the community will be communicated to you from time to time" it said.

Meanwhile, the information caused tension in Uyo, as security officials have been forced to take pre-emptive measures in other institutions across the state, believed to have been listed for attack by the Islamist.
It was gathered that students and other members of the institution are observing the security measures while routine internal security checks on vehicles have been stepped up.

Shekau took on many countries and world leaders. The list includes the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China, Israel and Italy He said: “Some of you (like Germany, Russia, China, Italy) think because we do not mention your names, you think we don’t know you people are involved.

“If I catch Jonathan, Obama and others I am going to sell them. Don’t think I am joking. God, you are my witness.
“If you (Obama, Jonathan, others) seek God’s forgiveness, He forgives. He is a merciful God. If you don’t seek forgiveness, I am going to cut you into pieces.”

He went on: “You Jonathan, you are watching me. If you like, go and bring everybody all over the world, you cannot do anything. Bring up human rights issue, you don’t know anything. Do Nigerians know their rights?

“I am the President; there is no President in Nigeria; there is no President in the world. I am the President in Islam and in the world.”

Shekau vowed that the spate of killings by the sect would continue in any part of the country.
He added: “We will kill until we get tired. We will kill all infidels until we get tired. We will kill unbelievers like chicken. We will tie them. We have decided what we will do.

“Any amount let them spend; we will bring this country down. We are stronger than America anywhere they are.

“We will open a killing pool for all those who have insulted us like George Bush, Obama and even Jonathan.
“I pledge to Allah my God to be faithful, loyal and honest. And you to your country. We will know who God will answer between you and I.

“There is no government existing in Nigeria. Do you think you have government?”

On the sect’s recurring attacks on FCT, the Boko Haram leader said the sect would also not ceasefire.
He added: “We are in Abuja, we will cause havoc. We will do Jihad. We are all Abuja residents. Very soon, we will come to Abuja.
“We are going to the refineries. We are going to the unbelievers. We won’t go to your (Jonathan’s) state; we will go to where there are refineries.”

Shekau listed the sect’s grouses against some world powers, including opposition to western education, democracy and homosexuality.

He said: “The war we are fighting is against democracy, constitution, Christianity and Western Education.
“I don’t have any relationship with Saudi Arabia, they are nothing. They are also unbelievers. I don’t follow white men. I am not going to follow anybody except God. I won’t have any relationship with anybody than God.

“You say you want to use democracy to cheat us or to deceive us. You are talking of government of the people by the people for the people. I am talking of the government of Allah by the Allah for the Allah.

U.S. State Department adds first Boko Haram members to ‘terrorist’ list.(AA).The United States on Thursday named three alleged leaders of the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram as “foreign terrorists,” the first time it has blacklisted members of the Islamist group blamed for attacks across Africa’s most populous nation. The State Department identified the three as Abubakar Shekau, who it called the “most visible” leader of the group, and Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid al-Barnawi, who it said were tied both to Boko Haram and to al Qaeda’s north African wing. “Under Shekau’s leadership, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks in northern Nigeria, its primary area of operation. In the last 18 months, Boko Haram or associated militants have killed more than 1,000 people,” the State Department said in an announcement. “These designations demonstrate the United States’ resolve in diminishing the capacity of Boko Haram to execute violent attacks,” it said. The action by the State and Treasury departments, first reported by Reuters on Wednesday, follows growing pressure on the Obama Administration to take stronger action against Boko Haram, which has stepped up attacks on Christian places of worship this year in its drive to establish an Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria.
