Internet users have been given a glimpse into the crew capsule of Russia's latest tank, the Armata T-14 or the first time – a video of the vehicle's test runs of and the work of its crew has been uploaded on YouTube.

The first frames from the crew capsule show the interior of the combat vehicle – lots of electronics, computer displays and a spacious interior that easily accommodates three crew members.

The video demonstrates the tank's tests on the testing range, apparently conducted last winter. The vehicle shows its capabilities and stability when driving on snowy roads and rough terrain at the never-seen-before speed for a tank of up to 50 mph.

The basic version of the T-14 is designed for a 125-mm gun. However, according to gunsmiths, the combat vehicle can be upgraded for 152-mm weaponry.

Defense physicist Maxim Lyudomirsky, one of the team responsible for developing the weapons systems for Russia's new Armata heavy tank, has been found guilty of treason.

The Moscow City Court sentenced Lyudomirsky, who was arrested back in 2014, to nine years in prison on Nov. 18.

Details of the hearing are not known, since the case is classified and was heard in closed session.

Maxim Lyudomirsky was a co-owner of the Elektrooptika research and production complex and concurrently held the post of chief engineer there.

The complex specializes in the development and manufacture of laser strapdown inertial navigation systems (LINS) (a navigation device for aircraft), their basic elements, as well as specialized software.

Lyudomirsky also designed some of the weapon systems for the Armata heavy tank. He is also the author of a number of works on laser technology.


According to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Lyudomirsky was found to have collaborated with a foreign country, passing valuable information on new developments in the Russian arms industry. Read the full story here.

The Uralvagonzavod plant has announced that once the new Armata T-14 tank goes into mass production its price will be slashed by around 50 percent, a reduction that will make the combat vehicle attractive value for money on the market.

The price of the latest Russian Armata T-14 tank will be just 250 million rubles (3.7 million dollars) once it goes into mass production, according to Oleg Siyenko, CEO of Uralvagonzavod, the manufacturer of the tank.

The cost of the Armata T-14 was previously estimated at between 400 and 500 million rubles (about $6.5 million). Such a high price per unit was due to the lack of mass production, as the production of prototypes is always more expensive for the manufacturer.

The Armata will go into mass production in 2017-2018 and Russia’s armed forces will receive 2,300 T-14 tanks by 2020.

Uralvagonzavod has not ruled out the possibility of manufacturing the Armata for export. In this case, the relatively low price for such complex hardware will prove attractive for potential buyers.

The jibe was particularly galling given Russia and China were allies who suffered the worst casualties in that global conflict.

“The T-14’s transmission is not well-developed, as we saw through a malfunction taking place during a rehearsal before the May 9 parade,” Norinco said in a Chinese-language post on its official WeChat account.

Germany and France are now preparing to jointly develop a new main battle tank, the Leopard 3, to replace its ageing Leopard 2 military vehicle by around 2030, which would be able to compete with Russia's next-generation Armata tank, recently showcased at the Victory Day parade commemorating the end of World War Two in Moscow.

The German Defense Ministry has announced its plans for the "Leo 3" (as it's likely to be nicknamed in Germany) to replace its main battle tank, the Leopard 2, Sputniknews reported.

The main reason for the modernization is believed to be the Leopard 2 service life, which is set to expire by 2030.

The German media, however, suggest that the real reason is the recently-presented analysis by Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) on Russia’s reinforced combat strength and its recently showcased T-14 Armata tanks, which were presented during the country's Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9.

The BND analysis suggests that even though the combat vehicles unveiled at the parade are still somewhat pre-production models, when completed, it will be a tank with the highest levels of armaments.

According to Deutsche Welle, the manufacturer of the current Leopard 2, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, is scheduled to fuse with the French firm Nexter Systems over the course of this year.

This has prompted the German media to report that the new Franco-German firm, with more than 6,000 staff and a combined turnover of around 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion), could be a strong candidate to win the contract to develop a new battle tank for the German Bundeswehr.

Just before the Victory Day Parade in Moscow, the US bimonthly magazine The National Interest reported on why America should really fear Russia's Armata T-14 tank.

The magazine suggested that Russia actually might be able to deliver in the field the tank of greater speed, maneuverability, firepower and survivability vis-à-vis anything being produced for Western armies.

The Armata is a Russian prototype of a heavy tracked vehicle platform that will be used in the construction of a next-generation main battle tank and a range of other combat vehicles. More here.

The tank is going to steal the show at the Victory Day parade on the Red Square, Moscow on May 9.

In addition, more than 16,500 servicemen and nearly 200 pieces of weaponry will be involved in the event.

The Russian Ministry of Defense officially revealed the country's most advanced battle tank, the T-14 Armata Main Battle Tank (MBT), arguably the world's deadliest armored fighting vehicle, a couple of weeks ahead of the grand 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade.

The new T-14 and the rest of Russia's new armored vehicles show a huge technological leap from the old Soviet-era military hardware.

"The new vehicles are principally clean-slate designs and represent the biggest change in Russia's armored fighting vehicle families since the 1960s and 1970s," HIS Jane's 360 Defense Weekly reported.

The key feature of the new tank is its unmanned remotely-controlled turret, with crew members seated in an armored capsule at the front of the tank's hull.

The T-14 is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore cannon that can fire high-powered munitions, including armor-piercing discarding sabot projectiles, guided missiles, shaped-charges and other types of munitions. The muzzle energy of the tank's cannon is greater than that of the German Leopard-2 Rheinmetall 120 mm gun, according to the Diplomat.

It is speculated that the Armata tank might also come with a 152 mm gun. If this is true, the tank will have the most powerful cannon ever mounted on a main battle tank. 

The T-14 will also carry a 30-mm sub-caliber gun to shoot down low-flying aerial targets, including planes and helicopters. To defend against incoming anti-tank missiles, the T-14 will have a 12.5 mm turret-mounted heavy machine gun, RT said.

Last month, we introduced you to Russia's new Armata main battle tank. Weighing in at 55 tons, and featuring multilayered armor, an independent crew capsule, and a fully automated 125 mm main gun firing both cannon rounds and laser-guided missiles, Armata is designed to be Russia's answer to General Dynamics' (NYSE: GD ) M1 main battle tank built for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.

We also described how Russia is using Armata ("Армата") as a core chassis upon which it will build an entire family of armored personnel carriers, anti-aircraft missile launchers, armored self-propelled artillery, flame throwers, bridge-layers, and minesweepers -- some operated as robots.

But as high-tech and powerful as all this sounds, the Armata contains one potentially fatal flaw: its cost.

Trouble in Putin's paradise Late last year, a controversy broke out between Russia's Ministry of Defense (MinOboron) and UralVagonZavod (UVZ), the military contractor responsible for building Armata. As described on Russian-language website gazeta.ru, MinOboron blasted UVZ for offering a tank that it describes as overpriced and incomplete.

To date, Russia has invested 15 billion rubles ($239 million) in developing the Armata tank, and budgeted 39 billion ($622 million) more. But MinOboron is demanding UVZ both complete its design and lower its price.
