"REVENGE" - Fearing Romney victory, EPA plans post election anti-coal regulation.

"REVENGE" - Fearing Romney victory, EPA plans post election anti-coal regulation.(WE).President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency has devoted an unprecedented number of bureaucrats to finalizing new anti-coal regulations that are set to be released at the end of November, according to a source inside the EPA. More than 50 EPA staff are now crashing to finish greenhouse gas emission standards that would essentially ban all construction of new coal-fired power plants. Never before have so many EPA resources been devoted to a single regulation.
The independent and non-partisan Manhattan Institute estimates that the EPA’s greenhouse gas coal regulation will cost the U.S. economy $700 billion.
The rush is a major sign of panic by environmentalists inside the Obama administration. If Obama wins, the EPA would have another four full years to implement their anti-fossil fuel agenda. But if Romney wins, regulators will have a very narrow window to enact a select few costly regulations that would then be very hard for a President Romney to undo.
Reached for comment, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said:
President Obama won’t tell the voters of the Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania the truth about his plans to shut down the coal industry. Even after he loses on Tuesday, it appears that the President will still try to continue his efforts to kill their jobs and drive up their energy prices. Mitt Romney is committed to reversing the damage caused by the Obama Administration’s disastrous liberal agenda as soon as he takes office.
Hmmmm.......Obama: “If somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them,” Read the full story here.

Update and confirmation of ‘Global warming stopped 16 years ago’ aka ‘the pause’.

Update and confirmation of ‘Global warming stopped 16 years ago’ aka ‘the pause’.(WUWT).This time Dr. Judith Curry weighs in. In an email to me earlier this week she revealed that she has been quite busy with this rebuttal (to warmists) and assisting the Mail with this update to the story that appeared last week. Bottom line, the Met Office rebutal was more in agreement than not and Dr. Curry suggests ‘Take a lesson from other scientists who acknowledge the “pause”.’- Anthony.
The Met Office now confirms on its climate blog that no significant warming has occurred recently: ‘We agree with Mr Rose that there has only been a very small amount of warming in the 21st Century.’Read the full story here, more here.

Video - NASA on Arctic sea ice record low – storm ‘wreaked havoc on the Arctic sea ice cover’

Video - NASA on Arctic sea ice record low – storm ‘wreaked havoc on the Arctic sea ice cover’.(WUWT).In a September 18 video posted by NASA on its website, they admit that the Arctic cyclone, which began on August 1, “wreaked havoc on the Arctic sea ice cover” by “breaking up sea ice.” (NASA story here).Global warming activists have been giddy in their hyping of the satellite era record low Arctic sea ice extent while ignoring the satellite record sea ice expansion in the Antarctic.
Many climate activists have sought to downplay the significance that the Arctic cyclone played on this year’s summer sea ice in the Arctic. But this new inconvenient video report from NASA now makes the warmists’ attempt to deny the cyclones role in 2012′s Arctic sea ice conditions — impossible.
The September 18 NASA video notes: “A powerful storm wreaked havoc on the Arctic sea ice cover in August 2012. This visualization shows the strength and direction of the winds and their impact on the ice: the red vectors represent the fastest winds, while blue vectors stand for slower winds.”Read the full story here.

PRESS RELEASE new analysis demo that 1979-2008 U.S. temperature trends are spuriously doubled

PRESS RELEASE new analysis demo that 1979-2008 U.S. temperature trends are spuriously doubled.(WUWT).PRESS RELEASE – U.S. Temperature trends show a spurious doubling due to NOAA station siting problems and post measurement adjustments.
Chico, CA July 29th, 2012 – 12 PM PDT – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A reanalysis of U.S. surface station temperatures has been performed using the recently WMO-approved Siting Classification System devised by METEO-France’s Michel Leroy. The new siting classification more accurately characterizes the quality of the location in terms of monitoring long-term spatially representative surface temperature trends.
The new analysis demonstrates that reported 1979-2008 U.S. temperature trends are spuriously doubled, with 92% of that over-estimation resulting from erroneous NOAA adjustments of well-sited stations upward.
The paper is the first to use the updated siting system which addresses USHCN siting issues and data adjustments.
The new improved assessment, for the years 1979 to 2008, yields a trend of +0.155C per decade from the high quality sites, a +0.248 C per decade trend for poorly sited locations, and a trend of +0.309 C per decade after NOAA adjusts the data. This issue of station siting quality is expected to be an issue with respect to the monitoring of land surface temperature throughout the Global Historical Climate Network and in the BEST network.
Today, a new paper has been released that is the culmination of knowledge gleaned from five years of work by Anthony Watts and the many volunteers and contributors to the SurfaceStations project started in 2007.

This pre-publication draft paper, titled An area and distance weighted analysis of the impacts of station exposure on the U.S. Historical Climatology Network temperatures and temperature trends, is co-authored by Anthony Watts of California, Evan Jones of New York, Stephen McIntyre of Toronto, Canada, and Dr. John R. Christy from the Department of Atmospheric Science, University of Alabama, Huntsville, is to be submitted for publication.Hmmmm.......Obama: "All across the world, in every kind of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather patterns and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long-running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it's here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster." Read the full story here.

"Global Warming hits Sweden" - Many newborn reindeer calves have frozen to death.

"Global Warming hits Sweden" - Many newborn reindeer calves have frozen to death.(IAN).“With the unusually late, cold and rainy spring in the mountains, reindeer husbandry has been hit hard,” says this article from Swedish News Dagens Nyheter. “Many newborn calves have frozen to death, causing great economic losses for many reindeer owners.” “In the Wilhelmina southern village, around a third of reindeer calves froze to death. The snow is still there in some places in the mountains.” “The snow will not go away this summer unless we have a record hot August,” says Sami village chairman Tomas Nejne. “I have not been through this extremely late spring in living memory, so it’s probably more Sami villages affected,” says Jorgen Jonsson, chairman of the Swedish Sami’s Federation. Jonsson does not know how extensive reindeer calf death is because many reindeer owners have not been able to brand reindeer calves.Hmmm.....'Children just aren't going to know what snow is'.Read the full story here.

'Global Warming' - Another paper refutes the Mann made hockey stick – MWP was ≈1°C warmer than current temperatures.

'Global Warming' - Another paper refutes the Mann made hockey stick – MWP (Medieval Warm Period Project) was ≈1°C warmer than current temperatures.(WUWT).This new paper uses a rather unique proxy; high-resolution samples micromilled from archaeological shells of the European limpet, Patella vulgata. Mr. Limpet would be proud.
A paper published this week in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology finds that the Medieval Warming Period “was warmer than the late 20th century by ~1°C.” The paper adds to the peer-reviewed publications of over 1000 scientists in the Medieval Warm Period Project showing that the global Medieval Warming Period was warmer than the current warming period.
Highlights:
► We investigated oxygen isotope ratios of Viking Age limpet shells.
► Seasonal SST was reconstructed for the early MCA (10th-12th centuries).
► Early MCA winters were cooler and summers were warmer than late 20th century.
► MCA seasonality was almost twice that of the late 20th century.
The paper is titled:
Marine climatic seasonality during early medieval times (10th to 12th centuries) based on isotopic records in Viking Age shells from Orkney, Scotland.
During the 10th to 12th centuries winters were colder and summers were warmer by ~ 2 °C and seasonality was higher relative to the late 20th century. Without the benefit of seasonal resolution, SST averaged from shell time series would be weighted toward the fast-growing summer season, resulting in the conclusion that the early MCA was warmer than the late 20th century by ~ 1 °C. This conclusion is broadly true for the summer season, but not true for the winter season. Higher seasonality and cooler winters during early medieval times may result from a weakened North Atlantic Oscillation index.Read the full story here.

Farmers to be Paid to Stop Cows Farting? New Carbon Credit Plan Floated.

Farmers to be Paid to Stop Cows Farting? New Carbon Credit Plan Floated.(HL).Canadian farmers could soon be enjoying a lucrative new income from their cattle, if plans for a new “carbon credits” scheme are successful.
CBC News is reporting that Cedric Mcleod, an agricultural economist and founder of Mcleod Agronomics. is being paid by a private research institute to measure and record the “greenhouse gas” emissions of selected Canadian farms with a view to try and reduce them, and sell the difference as “carbon credits”:
MacLeod hopes to have a clear picture of the gas profile of New Brunswick dairy farms by the end of the year and will rank them from worst to best by comparing to a baseline from previous years.
“Then we’ll be able to say, ‘Look, on these 50 dairy farms, we found say, you know 100 tonnes of carbon credits per farm, times 50, there’s 5,000 tonnes of carbon. Who’s interested? Who wants to show some corporate responsibility?’
“And throw those out on the market and see if we can stimulate something.”
Carbon credits could be a new revenue source for the farmers, said MacLeod.
CBC News: Carbon Footprint of Dairy Farms Being Measured.
As a scientific report for the private institute notes, the possibility of selling carbon credits from reducing “emissions” from dairy farms is a win-win situation as bigger, more efficient farms will reduce their emissions naturally, so being paid on an ongoing basis for this is a huge added bonus.
Funding for the research carried out by the private institute was provided by the Canadian Government through the agency of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.Hmmmm.......I need a stiff drink after reading this.Read the full story here.

Obama vows to fight for climate action, make global warming a key 2012 issue.

Obama vows to fight for climate action, make global warming a key 2012 issue.(TheHill).President Obama is vowing to make the case for action on global warming during the 2012 campaign.
I suspect that over the next six months, this is going to be a debate that will become part of the campaign, and I will be very clear in voicing my belief that we're going to have to take further steps to deal with climate change in a serious way,” Obama told Rolling Stone magazine in a newly published interview.Obama’s comments follow a first term that saw global warming legislation collapse in Congress but several administrative steps to address climate proceed, such as tougher auto mileage rules and first-time greenhouse gas standards for new power plants.
Part of the challenge over these past three years has been that people's No. 1 priority is finding a job and paying the mortgage and dealing with high gas prices. In that environment, it's been easy for the other side to pour millions of dollars into a campaign to debunk climate-change science,” Obama said.Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, has called for stripping the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) power to regulate greenhouse gases and also opposes cap-and-trade proposals. On Capitol Hill, where Republicans are trying to thwart EPA’s rules, skepticism about climate science has become commonplace in the GOP, and cap-and-trade legislation is a nonstarter.
The vast majority of scientists say global warming is occurring and human activities are a key factor. A small minority call data on warming trends and the human contribution inconclusive or inaccurate.“Frankly, I'm deeply concerned that internationally, we have not made as much progress as we need to make. Within the constraints of this Congress, we've tried to do a whole range of things, administratively, that are making a difference — doubling fuel-efficiency standards on cars is going to take a whole lot of carbon out of our atmosphere. We're going to continue to push on energy efficiency, and renewable energy standards, and the promotion of green energy. But there is no doubt that we have a lot more work to do,” Obama said.
“James Hansen is a scientist who has done an enormous amount not only to understand climate change, but also to help publicize the issue. I have the utmost respect for scientists,” Obama said in the interview. “But it's important to understand that Canada is going to be moving forward with tar sands, regardless of what we do. That's their national policy, they're pursuing it.”
He later added: “The reason that Keystone got so much attention is not because that particular pipeline is a make-or-break issue for climate change, but because those who have looked at the science of climate change are scared and concerned about a general lack of sufficient movement to deal with the problem.”Capitol Hill Republicans have also alleged that regulation of greenhouse gases will hurt the economy and attacked federal spending on green energy programs.Hmmmm...........

High level of deadly methane bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane – a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide – have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.
The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov of the International Arctic Research Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who led the 8th joint US-Russia cruise of the East Siberian Arctic seas, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed… Read entire article independent
