Increased subsidence in the caldera of Bardarbunga volcano is a cause for grave concern, due to possible large eruption and glacial flood, says Vidir Reynisson, director of the Civil Protection Agency in Iceland. The subsidence is thought to increase the likelyhood of an eruption in Bardarbunga.

An ongoing lava eruption, which started on August 31, is located on a fissure at Holuhraun, an ice-free lava field north of Bardarbunga. Magma has been propagating from underneath the volcano, towards the eruption, causing subsidence and strong earthquakes in the floor of the Bardarbunga caldera.

The subsidence observed since last week is now up to about 20 metres, says Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences.

He notes three possible scenarios regarding Bardarbunga. Firstly that the seismic activity, and the Holuhraun eruption, dies down slowly. A second scenario would see the subsidence continue, as well as the Holuhraun eruption, or even another eruption starting nearby.

"But the third scenario is that the subsidence in the floor of the caldera causes an eruption within Bardarbunga. Such an eruption could melt a large volume of glacial ice, and could end up as a powerful explosive eruption, with ashfall," says Dr. Gudmundsson. "The meltwater would perhaps not be released immediately, due to the contour of the caldera, but eventually it would come out as a powerful flood. Obviously, we are worried about this possibility."

This scenario is regarded as very serious, not least because of the potential for a flood, which could cause extensive damage, says the director of the Civil Protection Agency in Iceland, Vidir Reynisson. "We are gravely concerned about this scenario. If we study the history of the Bardarbunga volcano, we see large and powerful eruptions in or near the caldera; we are bound to take this very seriously, especially after the subsidence was observed."

Tomorrow, Reynisson and his colleagues at the Civil Protection Agency will brief the Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, on the situation at Bardarbunga. Today, Reynisson met with the National Power Company, (Landsvirkjun), to discuss the potential consequences of a major flood from Bardarbunga threatening hydropower plants to the west of Vatnajokull glacier, which covers the volcano.

"As soon as the subsidence started in Bardarbunga, the National Power Company acted to minimize the risk of damage due to a potential flood," says Reynisson. "Should an eruption occur in Bardarbunga, it would obviously be of vital importance to pinpoint the location of the eruption inside the caldera, so we could predict the direction of a possible flood. Our reaction would then depend on that information." The caldera itself covers about 80 square kilometres, and lies under a 700-800 metre thick ice cap.

About 250 million cubic meters of magma have flowed out of the chamber, belived to be under the Bardarbunga caldera, leading to a 15 meter subsidence of the caldera itself. These changes are clearly observed on the surface of the glacier covering the volcano, say scientists.

This was observed yesterday with radar measurements during a surveillance flight over Bardarbunga, and the Dyngjujokull outlet glacier to the north.

According to a status report issued today by the Icelandic Civil Protection Agency´s Scientific Advisory Board, those measurements show dramatic changes on the surface of the glacier. In the center, the Bardarbunga caldera, beneath, has subsided by up to 15 meters. This corresponds to a volume change of 0.25 cubic kilometres, or 250 million cubic meters. According to the report, the shape of the subsidence matches the elevation of the caldera floor under the 7-800 meter thick ice having lowered by that amount.

Never seen before

"This much subsidence has never before been measured in Iceland," says geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, a professor at University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences in an interview. "We believe that the strong earthquakes in Bardarbunga are signs of this subsidence. We see no signs of eruptions or geothermal activity in the caldera itself, but this subsidence does however not decrease the likelyhood that something could happen in Bardarbunga," says Gudmundsson. "One theory is that the bottom of the caldera kind of floats on the magma below, and helps to push it out towards the dike intrusion, which is feeding the eruption in Holuhraun."

Not since 1875

"We have not measured an event like this before in Iceland," says Gudmunsson. "We probably have to go back to the formation of the Öskjuvatn caldera in Askja, in 1875, when a large explosive eruption occurred there. That event was of course much larger, with subsidence of about 300 meters, but the current one in Bardarbunga is ongoing, and very significant."

Within 24 hours, lava flowing from the Holuhraun fissure will enter the one of the branches of Jokulsa a Fjollum glacial river, if the advancement rate remains the same, says volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson. Volcanic activity in Holuhraun has not diminished since yesterday.

"The lava field has been advancing towards the westernmost outlet of Jokulsa a Fjollum glacial river, with a rate of about 40 metres per hour," says Thordarson, who is observing the eruption in Holuhraun along with collagues from the University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences and the Icelandic Met Office.

"If the lava flow remains steady, we should see the lava entering the riverbed sometime in the afternoon tomorrow," he says. "I do not expect much explosive activity, but we should however see some violent magna/water interaction when the lava meets the glacial runoff."

The glacial river runs from the Dyngjujokull outlet glacier in several branches; the branch which the lava is heading for is one of the larger ones.

Scientists at Iceland Geosurvey (ISOR), a state-owned geoscientific research institution, are expecting a protracted eruption rather than a short one north of Vatnajokull glacier. They have been monitoring and evaluating the situation in Bardarbunga volcano.

Impossible to predict how long an erutpion will last

A lava eruption started early Sunday morning on a fissure at the lava field Holuhraun, north of the subglacial volcano Bardarbunga, Iceland‘s largest. This is the third eruption since an intense episode of seismic activity started at and around Bardarbunga around the middle of August. The first eruption was located at Bardarbunga, but faded out before it managed to break through the thick glacier. A tiny second eruption started at Holuhraun in the early hours of Friday, but lasted only 3-4 hours. The third eruption is still ongoing.

The scientist at ISOR say it is impossible to predict how long the eruption at Holuhraun will last. That depends mainly on how clean a path the magma will have, from the source at Bardarbunga, to the eruption site. The Krafla Fires (an eruption in the Krafla volcanic system in the north of Iceland in the 1970s and 80s) came in short bursts, with the magma gathering steadily in a shallow magma chamber, and flowing from there intermittently into the fissure system.

The scientists at ISOR believe it is more likely that the magma in the current eruption does not stop in a shallow magma chamber like in the Krafla Fires, Rather it will flow directly in a channel under the magma chamber and out to the volcanic craters. In their estimation the upflow of magma is much larger under Bardarbunga than it was in the Krafla Fires. Therefore they expect one protracted eruption or multiple eruptions, each lasting for a short while.

The scientists point out that inside the ring in question, very few earthquakes are detected. According to their article, this would indicate that the matter underneath is very hot, above or near melting point. This is is considered evidence of a very large magma chamber existing underneath Badarbunga caldera, at a very shallow depth.acted eruption or multiple eruptions, each lasting for a short while.

The scientists say that an eruption straight up from such a magma chamber, where acidic magma has been gathering for a long time, could be a large one and could produce large amounts of ash and pumice, similar to the eruption in Askja, a nearby Icelandic volcano, in 1875.

There is currently no indication of an eruption of that size being imminent at Bardarbunga, even though there is considerable earthquake activity in the rim of the caldera. Strong earthquakes at the Bardarbunga in Vatnajokull are signs that the magma chamber beneath is partly subsiding due to the magma streaming out, says Pall Einarsson professor of geophysics. Since August 16th, 559 earthquakes have been detected; twelve of them Magnitude 5 and over.

During the entire episode of the seismic and volcanic activity in northwestern Vatnajokull, Bardarbunga and north of the glacier, the strongest earthquakes have been detected along rim of the caldera in Bardarbunga, a subglacial volcano.

A 5.3 Magnitude event was detected there shortly before noon today; since August 16, some 559 earthquakes have been detected around the caldera. 26 of them have been larger than Magnitude 4; 12 have exceeded Magnitude 5.

"These strong earthquakes are the consequence of magna streaming out of the chamber beneath the caldera", says Pall Einarsson, professor of geophysics at University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences. "The magma chamber is clearly subsiding, thus reacting to the considerable amount of magma that has been streaming out towards the dike intrusion," says Einarsson.

"Analysis of these earthquakes supports this conclusion, as well as nearby GPS measurements of land deformation. We call this pressure changes in the roof of the magma chamber; in effect, the top of the volcano is sinking ever so slightly."

The lava flowing from the fissure north of Vatnajokull is classified as Pahoehoe lava - a type of basaltic lava that is very common in eruptions in Iceland. The term comes from Hawaii and means smooth unbroken lava. The lava at Holuhraun is so thin however, that it forms slabs on the surface.

According to dr. Armann Hoskuldsson, volcanologist at Univ. of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences, who has been observing the eruption from the start, the lava is about 1 metre thick when it exits the fissure. "But at the edges of the lava streams, the lava has reached a thickness of 7-8 metres when the edge collapes and stumbles forward."

The lava is hot - really hot. "About 1200 degrees Celcius at the center of the fissure, but cools down rather rapidly," says dr. Hoskuldsson. "Then the surface layer solidifies and creates a sort of slabs that move with the stream. The lava is so thin and moves rather fast, so that the slabs keep breaking up - which is why this particular form is termed Slabby Pahoehoe."

According to a status report from the Institute of Earth Sciences today, the current eruption is believed to have produced until now about 20-30 million cubic meters of lava at a rate of 100 cubic metres per second. Considerable amount of sulphuric gas rises from the lava, making it essential for scientists in the area to have gas detectors and gas masks available.More info here at Volcano Discovery.

The volcanic activity in Holuhraun appears to be rapidly subsiding according to geologists. Previously they said the activity appeared stable. No explosions have been detected in the eruption and the lava flow had been quite steady. The eruption itself cannot be detected on seismic monitors.

A Magnitude 5 earthquake was detected on the northwestern ridge of Bardabunga around 9 am this morning. It is the strongest quake measured in the area in 18 years.

There is quite a lot of seismic activity in and around the north of Vatnajokull. About 500 earthquakes have been detected since midnight last night and the strongest activity is around Dyngjujokull glacier as has been the case in the past few days.

The strongest of these quakes measured 5.7 and occurred on the 26th of august. It was the most powerful earthquake in Iceland since 2008, when a 6.3 Magnitude earthquake caused widespread damage in southern Iceland.

 A second effusive fissure eruption started in an ice-free area north of Bardarbunga, early Sunday morning. The eruption is located in the Holuhraun lava field, where a small fissure opened Friday morning.

Due to the possibility that the eruption increases, in particular if the erupting fissure propagates to the ice, and starts to produce ash plumes, the alert level has been set to red.

A new eruptive phase has started at the same fissure that had been briefly active Friday morning.

The new eruption seems to be bigger than the previous one and located slightly north of the Friday fissure vent. The active fissure was estimated to be 1.5 km long and is located approx. 9 km north of the Dyngjujökull glacier in the Holuhraun lava plain.

At the same time, intense seismic activity continues. More than 200 earthquakes have been detected since midnight, both under the active intrusion under and north of the rim of the glacier NE of the volcano as well as under the caldera of Bárdarbunga itself. The stringest were 7 quakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.8.

The Icelandic Met office has confirmed the eruption this morning, writing that "it is very calm", i.e. there are no tall fountains or ash plumes, only effusion of lava flows.Read the full story here.

The still intense earthquake swarm and deformation continues with little variation. No further eruptive activity has occurred since yesterday's "blitz" eruption.

The intrusion has not changed position and is focused on a 15 km long stretch both under and outside the Dyngjujökull glacier NE of Bardarbunga. Earthquake activity also continues under the volcano's caldera with the strongest today so far being a magnitude 5.4 event this morning.

Summary of the eruption from the Icelandic Met Office:

"- At 00:02 UTC signs of a lava eruption were detected on web camera images from Mila. The web-camera is located at Vaðalda, north-east of the eruption site.

- Around midnight, weak signs of increased tremor were apparent on IMO's seismic stations near to the eruption site. At 00:20 UTC scientists in the field from the Icelandic Met Office, Institute of Earth Sciences and Cambridge University confirmed the location of the eruption.

- The eruption occurred on an old volcanic fissure on the Holuhraun lava field, about 5 km north of the Dyngjujökull ice margin. The active fissure was about 600 m in length.

A small amount of lava drained from the fissure and by around 04:00 UTC, lava flow is thought to have stopped.

- According to seismic data and web-camera imagery, the eruption peaked between 00:40 and 01:00 UTC.

- At the beginning of the eruption, seismic activity decreased, although seismicity has since returned to levels observed in recent days.

- Aerial observations by the Icelandic Coastguard show that only steam is rising from the site of the lava eruption.

- There are no indications that the intensity of the activity declining.

At this moment it is unclear how the situation will develop. However, three scenarios are considered most likely:

1 The migration of magma could stop, resulting in a gradual reduction in seismic activity and no further eruptions.

2 The dike could reach the Earth's surface north of Dyngjujökull causing another eruption, possibly on a new fissure. Such an eruption could include lava flow and (or) explosive activity.

3 The intrusion reaches the surface and an eruption occurs again where either the fissure is partly or entirely beneath Dyngjujökull. This would most likely produce a flood in Jökulsá á Fjöllum and perhaps explosive, ash-producing activity.

Other scenarios cannot be excluded. For example, an eruption inside the Bárdarbunga caldera."

Speculations that a small eruption had occurred or still continues at the site of the new ice cauldrons continue. According to an interview with the National Broadcast (RUV), scientists estimate that 30 - 40 million cubic metres of ice have been melted.

According to a statement from Civil Protection, there are 3 cauldrons, 4-6 km long, 1 km wide and approx 10-15 deep, near the southeastern rim of the Bardarbunga caldera.

Relation with ongoing intrusion?

It is believed that they are not directly related with the ongoing intrusion now located halfway between the northern edge of the Dyngjujökull glacier and the Askja caldera. The seismic activity along the intrusion continues to propagate today, but with somewhat weaker energy compared to previous days.

The surveillance airplane of the Icelandic Cost Guard will make another overflight this morning. Updated information can be expected to emerge at around 11 am Icelandic time.

There are new developments, but uncertain how to interpret the visible signs:

During an overflight today, Icelandic scientists discovered a row of 10-15 m deep ice cauldrons and many small fractures in the ice south of the Bárðarbunga caldera, forming a 6-4 km long line. The cauldrons have been formed as a result of melting, possibly a sub-glacial eruption, but it is uncertain when it occurred and whether it is still going on. The site of that activity seems to be a few km SE of the Bardarbunga caldera, where earthquakes occurred during the early stage of the seismic crisis. At the same time, earthquakes along the ongoing intrusion north of the ice cap continue to migrate northwards toward Askja volcano.

IMO has not detected elevated volcanic tremor that would indicate eruptive activity. Civil Protection issued a statement that there are (at least until now) no signs of an eruption at the surface. However, an imminent eruption could not be ruled out and authorities keep a close watch on the situation.

The intense seismic crisis caused by a significant laterally migrating magma intrusion continues to evolve with little changes. Earthquake activity has been a bit weaker yesterday, only to pick up again today. Two more magnitude 5+ quakes occurred after midnight near the caldera of the Bardarbunga central volcano.

The intrusion is now 45 km long and roughly 20 km deep, but so far remains mostly below 5 km depth. Horizontal spreading between the Dyngjuháls (DYNC) and Kverkfjöll (Gengissig, GSIG) GPS stations approaches 50 cm. At the moment, the expected most likely outcome scenario is a moderate to large fissure eruption, should the dyke eventually breach surface. The question is when this will occur, and where the magma exactly will be coming from:

What type of fissure eruption?

A question is whether it is fed by lateral magma movement from a reservoir beneath the Bardarbunga central volcano (typical flank eruption along a fissure) or in contact with the mantle source, so it could erupt as a rifting fissure eruption, and potentially become a very large event.

New magma meeting Askja volcano?

The front of the propagating fissure continued to move a bit north, towards the Asjka caldera. If the current propagation rate continues, it might hit this volcano in 2-4 days. In this scenario, it is feared that the new and hot intruding magma could start to interact with pockets of silica-rich (and hence very viscous, prone to explosive eruptions) older magma stored under Askja. The result could be potentially very explosive eruptions of the latter volcano, as two very different magmas interact and the equilibrium of the older magma chamber is disturbed: - the older silica-rich magma is heated up, can partially remelt and becomes less viscous, more able to flow. - the intruding, hot magma is cooled and dissolved gasses forced to form bubbles, causing overpressure of the system.

Inflation at Grimsvötn volcano

Interestingly, the neighboring large Grimsvötn volcano located to the southeast of Bárdarbunga seems to respond to the intrusion with a weak pulsating inflation pattern (GFUM station). There are no earthquakes under it suggesting that it is caused by an own intrusion.

Why this occurs is unclear. One interesting idea from VolcanCafe was "that the Bárðarbunga intrusion hit an old intrusion in Grimsvötns containing molten material and that it due to higher pressure in the Grimsvötn system took that infamous left-hand turn down Grimsvötns fissure swarm. It would certainly explain the marked pulsing on the GPS plot."

The earthquake this morning at the north/northwestern part of the caldera at 6 km depth at 01:26 UTC could have been the biggest in the current swarm. Estimated magnitudes range from 4.1 (IMO) to 5.7 (USGS).

The magma intrusion (dyke) north of Dyngjujokull is still migrating and stretches now approx. 10 km outside of the glacier. It will be interesting to see what happens when it reaches the area of the Asjka fissure swarm. A possibility could be that older dykes from that one stop the propagation of the Bardarbunga intrusion, another that it activates Askja as well.

The seismic crisis in Bárðarbunga and Dyngjujökull continues strongly. Today alone, more than 400 quakes of magnitudes up to 4 were detected, mostly at the N end of the active intrusion that has been going on.

The location of the quakes indicating the front of the magma intrusion (dyke) continues to advance northwards. Its tip is now outside the glacier and approaching the Askja caldera. In case of an eruption, it is now more likely that at least some of it occurs on land (and not under the glacier).

In total, the intrusion has a length of approx. 40 km. Horizontal displacement in the crust, based on GPS data, approaches 1 meter above the dyke. A rough estimation of the volume of intruded magma is about 1 cubic kilometers.

The likelihood of a large (or even very large) rifting fissure eruption is becoming greater each day. This would occur as soon as the underground intrusions "open the lip" of the fissures on the ground and let magma to rise and decompress, producing violent lava fountaining eruptions.

The Bárdarbunga volcanic system is one of the most active and productive in the world and has been the site of Iceland's largest historic eruption in 1477.

Judging from current and historic data, and given that , one of the most likely scenarios at the moment would be an event similar to the fissure eruption of the so-called "Krafla Fires" at the Krafla volcano's fissure swarm during 1980-84.

Even a really large event such as the 1783 Skaftár Fires (Laki eruption) cannot be ruled out (but for now has only a small chance of happening).

In the meantime, Icelandic authorities have downgraded the emergency status of the area, although road closings and restrictions north of Vatnajokull are still in effect.

Over 700 earthquakes were detected from midnight to noon Monday. Several earthquakes were above 3.0 magnitude.

23rd August 2014 14:10 - a small eruption under Dyngjujökull

A small lava-eruption has been detected under the Dyngjujökull glacier. 

The Icelandic Coast Guard airplane TF-SIF is flying over the area with representatives from the Civil Protection and experts from the Icelandic Met Office and the Institute of Earth Sciences.

Data from the equipment on board is expected later today. 

Data from radars and web-cameras is being received, showing no signs of changes at the surface. 

The estimate is that 150-400 meters of ice is above the area. 

The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red. 

Some minutes ago (14:04), an earthquake occurred, estimated 4.5 in magnitude.

The area in the highlands north of Vatnajokull glacier has been closed, and a widespread evacuation order is in effect. In the wake of ongoing earthquake activity around the subglacial volcano Bardarbunga, which is located in the northwestern part of the glacier.

There is currently no immediate danger, but if the volcano erupts, a major flood is expected to the north, fed by melting ice from the glacier. Around 3500 earthquakes have struck under the glacier since last weekend, marking the most intense earthquake activity on record in this area.

There is currently no change in seismic activity, and the evacuation order is a safety measure, because a volcanic eruption cannot be ruled out, although there are currently no signs that an eruption has started.

The area north of Vatnajokull glacier, all the way north to Route 1, is now off limits to the public. Mountain roads in the area have been closed, and local search and rescue teams have been called to help evacuate the area.

The area has no permanent inhabitants, but the evacuation includes parts of Vatnajokull National Park, with popular tourist attractions like Askja, Herdubreidarlindir, Hvannalindir and Kverkfjoll being closed.

Bardarbunga is one of Iceland's most dangerous volcanoes, and earthquakes in the same area triggered a subglacial eruption in 1996, leading to massive floods to the south. If the volcano were to erupt today, however, the most likely course of a flood is considered to be to the north, into the glacial river Jokulsa a Fjollum.

Iceland's banks went on an international buying binge in the early 2000s fuelled by cheap foreign loans.

But the collapse of the US investment bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008 froze credit markets and Iceland's banks quickly collapsed, plunging the island nation's economy into a deep recession.

Prosecutors will pursue six former executives of Landsbanki for manipulating the bank's share price by lending funds to investors on condition they buy shares, the reports said.

Nine former executives of Kaupthing will also face charges for various schemes to manipulate the share price of what was then the nation's top bank.

The former chief executives of both banks will be among those charged, according to the reports.

Iceland's then prime minister Geir Haarde was last year found guilty of one minor charge but cleared of serious accusations relating to his handling of the banking collapse.

Iceland Declares Independence From International Banks.(RND).By Bill Wilson – Iceland is free. And it will remain so, so long as her people wish to remain autonomous of the foreign domination of her would-be masters — in this case, international bankers.
On April 9, the fiercely independent people of island-nation defeated a referendum that would have bailed out the UK and the Netherlands who had covered the deposits of British and Dutch investors who had lost funds in Icesave bank in 2008.
At the time of the bank’s failure, Iceland refused to cover the losses. But the UK and Netherlands nonetheless have demanded that Iceland repay them for the “loan” as a condition for admission into the European Union.
In response, the Icelandic people have told Europe to go pound sand. The final vote was 103,207 to 69,462, or 58.9 percent to 39.7 percent. “Taxpayers should not be responsible for paying the debts of a private institution,” said Sigriur Andersen, a spokeswoman for the Advice group that opposed the bailout.A similar referendum in 2009 on the issue, although with harsher terms, found 93.2 percent of the Icelandic electorate rejecting a proposal to guarantee the deposits of foreign investors who had funds in the Icelandic bank. The referendum was invoked when President Olafur Ragnur Grimmson vetoed legislation the Althingi, Iceland’s parliament, had passed to pay back the British and Dutch.
“These were private banks and we didn’t pump money into them in order to keep them going; the state did not shoulder the responsibility of the failed private banks,” Iceland President Olafur Grimsson told Bloomberg Television.
The voters’ rejection came despite threats to isolate Iceland from funding in international financial institutions. • Obama Is Dangerous for Peace.(AT).By James Lewis.The president of the United States has just destroyed the longest-lasting peace treaty in the Middle East. That Nobel Prize-winning treaty between Egypt and Israel was destroyed by Obama in broad daylight, right in front of God and everybody, with stunning audacity.The White House kept repeating the message that Mubarak must resign, and "now means now." This is simply unprecedented, even during the height of the Cold War. American presidents don't demand in public that their crucial allies resign. It is a diplomatic insult of unprecedented proportions.

And yet -- Obama said nothing when Iran's genocide-threatening regime killed and tortured thousands of demonstrators at the start of Obama's administration. He has said nothing about Syria's Assad sending tanks to fire on rebels in the city of Homs. He said nothing when the Saudis sent troops into Bahrain to violently suppress protests. Indeed, the White House has actively aided repression by regimes much worse than Mubarak was -- regimes in Yemen, Somalia, and Iran.

So what's going on? Was it just another opportunistic chance for Obama to parade his overweening ego? Or was it more sinister?Mubarak was the thirty-year strongman who preserved the single biggest pillar of Middle East peace, the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. USA Today predicted that the peace treaty was in danger when Mubarak fell. Everybody knew. The Israelis kept telling Obama, and the Egyptians and Saudis must have done that as well. The Saudis, who are now facing a nuclear Iran fifty miles away, are walking away from their decades-long alliance with the United States. Nobody trusts American guarantees anymore.

Obama did it, knowing that the Arab world would break down into near-universal civil war. The so-called "Arab Spring" is a fraud. What we are seeing is an "Pan-Arab Civil War," from Tunisia to Yemen. Every country is in deep trouble, and Prof. Niall Ferguson, who has been warning about this catastrophe all along, now believes that famine and social warfare will come to Egypt and the others. They can no longer pay for the massive food imports they need to survive. Local capital has fled to safer places.

The Middle East has been "community disorganized." This is straight out of Saul Alinsky: community agitators destabilize communities so that they can push the remnants into whatever shape they want. The people who die are just too bad.This is so shocking, and so contrary to Obama's "peace" rhetoric, that few Americans can believe their own eyes, seeing that the biggest pillar of Middle East peace has been smashed right before them. This can only be a knowing move on the part of the Obama administration. Everybody who remembered the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty had to know.

Obama has now demanded that Israel retreat to its 1949 ceasefire lines --- which he lied about as the "1967 borders." Those 1949 lines would set Israel back to three large wars ago. It would turn Israel into one of those famous gerrymandered districts that look like a wriggling salamander.Those borders are indefensible, and they therefore would drive Israel into its ultimate defensive weapon: nuclear war. The radical leftist fantasy of threatening Israel with destruction runs into that brute fact: with its back to the wall, Israel would use nukes in self-defense. You cannot drive a nuclear power into a corner without it resorting to war.

The overthrow of Mubarak has destabilized the entire Middle East. Indeed, this Pan-Arab Civil War has already taken more lives than the Japanese tsunami...and it threatens to get worse. After half a century of warm and friendly relations, Turkey is now threatening naval war against Israel in the eastern Mediterranean.This is exactly how Iran fell back into its medieval tyranny in Jimmy Carter's time -- and don't doubt that that calamity was triggered by Carter and his NSC henchman Zbigniew Brzezinski. A million people died in the Iran-Iraq war that followed the radicalization of Iran. Thousands of innocent Green Revolution demonstrators are still dying today in the regime's horrific prisons and torture chambers.

The U.S. Sixth Fleet has kept the peace in the Mediterranean for sixty years. When the Sixth Fleet was doing its job, no American ally like Turkey would ever have threatened naval war against another ally like Greece or Israel. Turkey has warships, but nothing compared to the Sixth Fleet. It therefore follows that Obama is not allowing the USN to interfere with the Turkish naval threat.For thirty years the Egypt-Israeli Peace Treaty sustained the fragile peace in the Middle East. Everything positive in Arab-Israeli relations was based on it. Stable relations between Israel and Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, and even Syria were all based on that solid-looking Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

Then Mr. Obama tore it all down, right in front of our eyes.Israel is now surrounded by countries that used to be at peace, but which are now talking war. They are armed with high-tech missiles: tens of thousands of scud missiles in Syria; forty thousand missiles of various types in Lebanon controlled by Hezbollah, and therefore by Iran; thousands of Grad and more primitive missiles in Gaza. If the PA declares a state, it will try to import even more offensive missiles, just like Hamas did in Gaza.Finally, Iran now has IRBMs and the first ICBMs with nuclear weapons coming soon, which can easily strike Israel -- but Iran can also strike U.S. military bases and naval vessels within a radius of 1,000 miles and more, not to mention the nations of southern and eastern Europe. Once developed, Iranian ICBMs can reach the United States, China, and Russia.The President of the United States has therefore destabilized the Middle East in the most dangerous way, and he has done so in broad daylight. And yes, people are already dying in the tens of thousands -- so far, 90 percent Muslims. But others may start dying soon.Even now, American armed forces are in secret combat in Yemen, Libya, and Somalia, and elsewhere, to keep things from completely falling apart. U.S. soldiers are facing daily death to keep Obama's China shop from shattering.Obama knows that he's pulled the rug out, and U.S. forces are now engaged in unknown numbers of Muslim countries to try to shape the outcome.And yet America's political pundits have watched it happen, and they mostly have kept silent as the grave. Nobody wants to say out loud what's obvious. That is the power of audacity. Obama's overthrow of Middle East peace is so shocking that no pundit even wants to call it what it is. American Jews has been silent. The left and Europe are pretending it didn't happen. The "neocons" are silent so far. (But Michael Ledeen is writing a Broadsides book about it.)This is the biggest news not fit to print in the New York Times. It's the biggest public secret in the world. But open your eyes, and you'll see it.Any sane observer has to wonder why the president did that. The pillar of Middle East peace, what there was of it, is now weakened, maybe fatally. It has to come from the combatants. It took three major wars to bring about that treaty.After Sadat was assassinated, his vice president, Hosni Mubarak, took over instead, and kept the peace with Israel intact for thirty years. Israel ceded the entire Sinai Desert to Egypt in return for that peace -- the biggest piece of land ever at stake in Arab-Israeli struggles. The Sinai is a huge land buffer, and when you're at war with a neighbor, you want to have plenty of land between you and your enemies. So Israel traded land for peace.Obama has "community disorganized" the Middle East, and he did it knowing what would happen. If you think our other at-risk allies aren't watching -- Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Saudi Arabia, Poland -- well, think again. If the United States stabs Egypt and Israel in the back, all the others are looking for safety. The Saudis are getting their own nukes. So will Japan and South Korea. Poland has signed a local self-defense treaty with former Soviet colonies.

So much for Obama, the Prince of Peace and Compassion, not the mention the Messiah of Hope and Progress. V.I. Lenin famously said that things have to get worse before they can get better. The only trouble is that Lenin only made things worse. • "Lord Forgive them?"Obama asks CBC for Biblical faith in his agenda.(WE).President Obama made an appeal to the religious faith of black voters at a Congressional Black Caucus rally, likening Biblical prophets who had faith in God -- and so refused to worship an idol -- to the black voters who "keep the faith" by supporting him and his policies - and, he hopes, his reelection campaign.Obama opened the speech by mentioning the Biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three captive Jews who were thrown into a fiery furnace because they would not worship a golden idol. Obama quoted a pastor who referred to the three men as "good crazy" for having that faith. He added that the pastor had attributed the same "good crazy" to him when he decided to run for president.Obama continued that analogy, equating the Jews' "faith in the things not seen" to the more mundane "belief that if you persevere a better day lies ahead."Obama added, "you and me, we're all a little bit crazy, but hopefully a good kind of crazy...We’re a good kind of crazy because no matter how hard things get, we keep the faith; we keep fighting; we keep moving forward."Obama then explained how he had "kept the faith" through various acts as president -- by responding to the economic crisis with the Dodd-Frank Wall Street regulations bill, through certain tax credits he had passed and through Obamacare. • Sen. Mike Lee Is Right to Ask: Is Google a Problem?(BigGovernment).To many conservatives, it may seem surprising that Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) would echo antitrust concerns in his aggressive questioning of Google Chairman Eric Schmidt during this week’s hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights. Isn’t that more of a lefty thing? Well, yes and no. The left indeed tends to be altogether too, er, liberal in its use of anti-trust laws to control big business. But conservatives also need to guard America against bad policies and domineering, unfair businesses practices that distort markets and ultimately punish consumers. I believe this is where Sen. Lee was coming from in his line of argument against Schmidt.Antitrust aside, Google has danced very close to the line in terms of profiting from other companies’ property rights, for example. In the eyes of many experts, Google also has violated consumer privacy. It has heavily influenced public policy to protect and enhance its bottom line at the expense of other companies. Surely it’s worth asking if Google’s business, lobbying and legal strategies pose threats free enterprise.As Lee put it, “Whether or not Google formally qualifies as a monopoly under our antitrust laws, one thing is clear. Given its significant ability to steer e-commerce and the flow of online information, Google is in a position to help determine who will succeed and who will fail on the Internet.” American’s have a right to be concerned about the implications of Lee’s observation.I do not begrudge Google its success. It is an amazing company with a superior search offering and a clever business model. At the same time, Google has built its market dominance and cash position, at least in part, by appropriating, some might say misappropriating, the copyrighted content of others. For instance, Google “scrapes” content from other websites and sells advertising based on that scraped content. Google has also become dominant on mobile phones with its Android operating system, which arguably uses patented technology owned by other companies. Google has also played fast and loose with trademark protection—selling ads around other companies’ trademarks.Most notoriously, Google generated significant revenue from illegal pharmaceutical advertising—a practice to which it admitted and forfeited $500 million to avoid prosecution.Finally, Google is altogether too close to liberal politicians and political causes for my personal tastes. There is no crime in that, to be sure. But we need look no further than the front page headlines regarding the Solyndra scandal to know that when politicians and crony capitalists become too familiar, we the people are the victims.There is no doubt that we should be skeptical of antitrust enforcement and other marketplace regulation, for that matter. But faulting Lee for speaking out against Google is misguided. We should not fault the messenger, but instead examine the clear message. No entity—government or corporation—should be in a position to threaten free enterprise or property rights. • US net neutrality rules finalized, in effect November 20.(ArsTechnica). Get ready, America—net neutrality finally comes to the Internet on November 20, 2011.That's the plan, at least. The FCC has just filed its final "open Internet" rules (PDF) with the Federal Register, which will publish them tomorrow and make them official. The rules go into effect on November 20, nearly a year after they were passed over Republican opposition on a 3-2 vote. (One of the FCC Commissioners who voted against the rules now works for Comcast.)But the plan will likely be derailed by lawsuits. Two, by Verizon and MetroPCS, were filed earlier this year but tossed because the rules had yet to be finalized. With tomorrow's printing in the Federal Register, the litigation floodgates will be thrown open and and complaints about the government overstepping its authority can start pouring in.Those complaints might well meet with success, given how the FCC went about the whole process. Rather than reclassifying broadband services in such a way that the FCC has clear jurisdiction over them, the agency relied instead on its much weaker "ancillary jurisdiction." (The legal rationale for this begins on p. 77 of the final rules, and the FCC gamely makes a case that it has the proper authority.) • 'King' Obama sidesteps Congress again.US-Turkey agree on delivery schedule for Predators.(TodaysZaman).Turkey is expecting the delivery of Predators in June 2012, the Turkish defense minister said a day after the country's prime minister announced that Turkey has agreed with the US on a deal involving the transfer of US-engineered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that could prove crucial in combating terrorism.“We have agreed in principle [on the delivery of Predators]. Negotiations will continue,” Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was quoted as saying by the Cihan news agency on Saturday in New York, where the Turkish leader was visiting on the occasion of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. Erdoğan also noted that Turkey had offered to either purchase or lease the drones and that the two countries were still settling the details regarding the delivery of the Predators.Following up on the agreement, Turkish Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz told reporters on Saturday that the drones to be received from the US would be delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in June of next year, reported the Anatolia news agency.“These [Predators] are UAVs with better qualities and features than the Herons,” Yılmaz said, and added that the Turkish-made Anka would also be ready for the TSK around the same time, as an alternative to Israeli-made Herons.Turkey was disappointed by Israel's failure to return six Herons it had sent to the country for maintenance, as it relies heavily on spy aircraft for surveillance missions that gather data on the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) across the country's borders in the Southeast.Yılmaz did not give any details on the number of Predators the US would deliver to Turkey but acknowledged that Ankara had presented a request for the UAVs in line with the TSK's needs. The minister added that the US and Turkey have been strategic partners and are cooperating in combating terrorism, which necessitated that both “support each other with no conditions or prejudice.”Meanwhile, the domestically made Anka, named after the legendary flying creature of Persian mythology, was brought out of the hangar for the first time in July 2010 and is expected to provide Turkey with a crucial advantage in its fight against PKK terrorism. • Report: Turkey operated agents in Israel to track soldiers.(YNet).Turkish intelligence officials have submitted to the state prosecution a list of 174 Israelis, mostly soldiers, who were involved in the 2010 raid on the Gaza-bound Mavi Marmara ship, the Turkish newspaper Sabah reported Monday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tops the list as the "primary responsible party."Turkish newspaper Zaman went a step further and reported on its website that Ankara had also operated intelligence agents inside Israel to confirm the soldiers' identities. The Turkish government denies ever asking its National Intelligence Organization (MIT) to confirm the identities of Israeli commandos involved in the raid. Istanbul's deputy prosecutor said that a lawyer for the IHH submitted a list of soldiers' names to his office and said it will be examined. The Turkel Commission investigating the events of the 2010 raid on the Mavi Marmara has asked the Military Advocate General for materials regarding criminal records opened following the flotilla. It has also requested to view files concerning possible violations of laws of war involving the deaths or injuries of citizens. The materials will be examined by Sukkot. Last month, the Military Advocate General released a report concerning six flotilla events. The Turkel Commission could not rule on the cases. According to the report in the Sabah newspaper, the Israelis were identified from photographs and various media sources."Almost all of the Israeli soldiers who killed nine Turkish citizens and injured 30 others have been identified," the report claimed. It was stated that Israel's government has not responded to the Turkish Justice Ministry's demand to release a list of the individuals who took part in the operation, prompting the intelligence officials to pour over records of the raid. Facebook and Twitter were used later in the hunt for information.The fact-finding team examined the names of the commandos of Shayetet 13 – the Navy unit that took over the Gaza-bound vessel – and matched them up with the numerous photos used in the media. Furthermore, the officials reviewed correspondence written by soldiers whom they believed took part in the raid in order to confirm their participation. Names submitted by the IHH movement, which organized the flotilla, were used in the search as well. According to the report, the Turkish prosecution intends to request the Israeli authorities to verify whether the people on the list, which includes 140 photos of 174 Israelis who directly or indirectly participated in the raid, were indeed ivolved.Officials who allegedly contributed to the decision and issued the order to stop the Mavi Marmara, including Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, made it to the top of the list as well."All of the Israeli Cabinet ministers were responsible for the order," the report read. The list also includes former IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, former Israel Navy Commander Eliezer Marom, former Military Intelligence chief Amos Yadlin and a variety of other high- and low-ranking officers. • Abbas Launches 'Palestinian Spring' in Ramallah.(ArutzSheva).Cheered by thousands, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was given a hero's welcome Sunday when he returned from his trip to the United Nations.“This is the popular Palestinian Spring,” he declared, calling for the official start of a non-violent intifada against Israel. “Raise your heads with pride; you are Palestinians!” he told the crowd that greeted him in Ramallah. The speech followed his application to the U.N. Security Council on Friday for recognition of the PA as a sovereign state, and its “full membership” in the international body.“The entire free world has accepted your history, your aspirations and your hopes with the utmost respect,” he told the gathering. “We told the world that today there is an Arab Spring – but also a Palestinian Spring. A non-violent Fighting Spring that will reach its goal."“Facing this determination – which I conveyed from you to the world – everyone stood up and appreciated your expectations and aspirations,” he told the cheering crowd. “Our diplomatic move, which has already begun, still has a long way to go,” he warned. “We must know that there will be those who will place obstacles in our path. They will block us and our existence here.”But, he added, “We have emphasized that we wish to obtain our rights via negotiations. The entire world was witness to the civility of this nation, which only demands its rights. We will remain on this land.”The U.N. speech, carefully geared to excite the PA street without inflaming it, was nevertheless seen by many in Israel as an exercise in official, institutional incitement “from the top.” Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said over the weekend that the PA leader's speech from the podium at the U.N. General Assembly was the “worst example of anti-israel incitement and vitriol” he had ever heard.Throughout his address, Abbas referred to Israel as a “colonial occupying power” and accused the Jewish State of deliberately targeting civilians, arbitrarily destroying crops, and demolishing schools, mosques and hospitals. He demanded that the U.N. recognize Judea, Samaria and major portions of Israel's capital city, Jerusalem, as the PA's hoped-for state and that Israel end all construction in Jewish communities in those areas as a precondition for any talks.Abbas also accused Israel of destroying Islamic holy sites and claimed the IDF sent “attack dogs” against Palestinian Authority Arabs. In addition, he also called for the release of all jailed PA terrorists, including murderers with blood on their hands, whom he referred to as “political prisoners.”During his trip back to Ramallah, Abbas told the London-based Arab daily newspaper a-Sharq al-Awsat that Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was the “last” leader with whom he could reach a final status agreement, “since he holds tough and almost ideological positions.”Read the full story here.

• Qaddafi relatives have reportedly left Algeria and are now in Egypt.(AlArabiya).Relatives of Muammar Qaddafi who had crossed into Algeria after Tripoli fell into rebel hands last month are now in Egypt, a day after the Algerian government criticized the release of an audio recording by Qaddafi’s daughter Aisha, an Algerian newspaper reported on Monday.The el-Khabar daily reported that eight of Qaddafi's relatives, possibly including his daughter Aisha, who had crossed into the country on August 29 boarded an Egypt Air plane t Algiers’ Houari Boumediene Airport on Saturday evening.Algeria’s foreign minister, Mourad Medelci, had denounced as "unacceptable" an audio recording by Qaddafi’s daughter criticizing Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC). Medelci, who was attending the U.N. General Assembly in New York, pledged to “take measures” against Qaddafi’s relatives. Neither Algerian nor Egyptian officials have confirmed the reports. In her first public remarks since the fall of Tripoli a month ago, Aisha Qaddafi accused Libya’s new leaders of being traitors, noting that some of them were members of Qaddafi’s regime before defecting in the civil war.“Those who have betrayed the pledge they offered [to Qaddafi], how come they won’t betray you?” she said in a warning to Libyans.“I assure you, he is fine, a believer in God, in good spirits, is carrying his gun and is fighting side by side with the warriors,” she said.The prerecorded four-minute message was broadcast Friday on the Syrian-based al-Rai TV, which has become Qaddafi’s main mouthpiece. • Syrian tanks pound town near Homs amid increasing numbers of army defectors.(AlArabiya).Syrian tanks pounded a town on a strategic highway overnight, injuring at least three people during a military crackdown on dissent in the central region of Homs, activists and residents said on Monday.Homs has become a major flashpoint between troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and army defectors, backing pro-democracy protesters demanding the president's overthrow.Three inhabitants of al-Rastan were injured when pro-Assad forces opened fire with heavy machine guns mounted on the tanks surrounding the town, on the main northern highway leading to Turkey, said residents.“There are around 60 tanks and armored vehicles on the eastern edge of Rastan alone. • Pakistani teenage girl expelled from school for blasphemy.(AlArabiya).A Pakistani school expelled a 13-year-old Christian girl for alleged blasphemy and her mother was transferred from her job as a nurse near the town where Osama bin Laden was killed, officials said Monday.The conservative Muslim country has been increasingly criticized in the West for tough anti-blasphemy laws that make defaming Islam punishable by death and over the persecution of the tiny non-Muslim minority.Faryal Tauseef, an eighth grade student at Sir Syed High School in the northwest garrison town of Havelian, was asked with her class to define “naat”, a style of poem written in praise of the Prophet Mohammed.The town is just south of Abbottabad, the garrison city where U.S. special forces killed the al-Qaeda leader in a covert raid on May 2, which exposed the Pakistan military to accusations of incompetence or complicity.“In her explanation Faryal wrote a word which was blasphemous,” school administrator Junaid Sarfraz told AFP.“The girl confessed, saying that she did it by mistake and the school administration, after consulting local clerics, decided to rusticate (expel) her.”According to her teacher, the girl made the mistake “intentionally” and the matter was referred to clerics because she had aroused similar suspicions of blasphemy in the past, Sarfraz added.Faryal’s mother, a staff nurse, had also been transferred out of town, he said.“The girl has been expelled for using derogatory words and her mother has been moved to another place,” district commissioner Syed Imtiaz Hussain Shah told AFP.Police said no case had been registered and that the matter was considered over following a pardon from Muslim clerics.The government says it has no intention of reforming Pakistan’s tough anti-blasphemy law, introduced in 1986, despite the assassinations of a leading politician in January and a Christian cabinet minister in March.Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member Salman Taseer was killed by his bodyguard and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti assassinated en route to a cabinet meeting for their opposition to the law.Taseer had supported a Christian mother of five sentenced to death in November 2010 for alleged blasphemy in the central province of Punjab.Pakistan has yet to execute anyone for blasphemy. • China could open up to Arctic with Iceland deal.(HurriyetDaily).A Chinese businessman’s plans to buy a swathe of Iceland for a resort have sparked local scepticism, amid speculation it is a bid by Beijing to get its hands on Arctic riches.The melting Arctic ice cap means lucrative oil and gas deposits under the seabed could soon become accessible, and shorter shipping routes between Asia and Europe will open up.Observers suggest those prospects may be the real reason behind property tycoon Huang Nubo’s plans to buy 300 square-kilometres (200 square-miles) of Icelandic wildnerness. Huang says he wants to build a luxury resort with a hotel, golf course and sports facilities, and Europe’s biggest nature reserve.The purchase could give China a foothold in the region - enabling it to establish contacts and gather information - before the Arctic treasure chest opens up.“It is likely that the Chinese government will find every way to enhance cooperation at multiple levels ... to lay the groundwork for future involvement in the construction and operation of infrastructural hubs” in the Arctic, Embla Eir Oddsdottir, project manager at The Stefansson Arctic Institute in Iceland, told Agence France-Presse. “The possibility of shipping and transport across the Arctic is very important for China.”With the icecap melting in summertime, the route between the Atlantic and the Pacific will shorten the sailing distance between Shanghai and Europe by about 6,400 kilometers (4,000 miles).“In talks with Icelandic authorities, (the Chinese) have made a point of saying it was very plausible” that China would use Iceland as a trans-Arctic shipping port, the chairman of the Icelandic parliament’s foreign affairs committee, Arni Thor Sigurdsson, told AFP.Marc Lanteigne, a senior lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and an expert on China’s rise as a strategic and economic power, said there were “very strong and very opaque links between large Chinese businesses and the country’s government.”China could especially be eying the up to 160 billion barrels of oil believed to be in the Arctic. “China is now importing more than 50 percent of its crude oil consumed, and like other large economies is worried about the safety of petroleum imports from the Middle East and is seeking alternative sources,” Lanteigne said.He noted that Beijing had been active in the oil trade in Central Asia, the Caspian region and sub-Saharan Africa in recent years.“It is therefore very likely that China would want to increase its presence in the Arctic out of concern for being left out of oil exploration there.”Sigurdsson said China had “no direct claim to natural resources” in the region, but could “become a participant ... by cooperating with states or companies searching for resources.”Observers said there was no concrete indication Beijing would use Huang’s land purchase to hunt for Arctic riches.
