Palestinian protesters hurl eggs at Canadian FM John Baird's convoy. (CTV).


RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Dozens of Palestinian protesters in Ramallah have hurled eggs and shoes at the convoy of Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird.

Baird travelled to the West Bank city today to meet with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki. The protesters held signs reading: "Baird you are not welcome in Palestine."

Activists from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party had earlier called for a boycott of the minister because of the Canadian government's perceived pro-Israel stance.

Baird is in the region for four days of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials. In a statement this morning, he described his meeting with Malki was "cordial and constructive," and said it included "candid and frank exchanges on areas where we differ in opinion."

Canada is opposed to the recent Palestinian bid to pursue war crime charges against Israel. Baird's statement says he asked Malki to "strongly reconsider the consequences of moving forward with any action that may be counterproductive to a negotiated solution with the State of Israel."

It was also his first meeting with the Palestinian Authority since the United Nations Security Council blocked a Palestinian motion to set a three-year deadline for the establishment of a Palestinian state on lands occupied by Israel.

Baird has spoken out against the move, as he has with similar Palestinian statehood initiatives at the UN. Baird later met with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who thanked Canada for its support. 

Baird said the two would discuss the "deeply regrettable decision" by the Palestinians to join the international court as well as our "common efforts to fight terrorism and extremism.". Hmmmm.....Don't you just love Obama's 'Peace partners'?

Iran has strongly condemned latest remarks by the Canadian foreign minister against the Islamic Republic, saying that such comments are part of the West’s Iranophobia scenario.

“The incumbent Canadian administration is known as a radical administration, whose positions lack political rationale and are worthless,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Thursday.

She also termed statements by John Baird as within the framework of an extremist approach.

“The Canadian government, which has repeatedly been blamed for violation of human rights, those of the First Nations in particular, is short of the qualification to make comments about this issue, and the human rights allegations made by the Canadian foreign minister in this regard are politically-motivated,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stated.

Afkham added that the growing criticism of extremist and unwise positions of the Canadian government within the Canadian society show that such stances are not welcome even inside Canada.

“Return to the conventionally diplomatic traditions is what the Canadian government needs in order to converge with the international community, and Canadian statesmen would better adopt the policy of moderation and collective wisdom.”


Speaking in a hard-line Wednesday speech that won him an ovation from the American Jewish Congress, Baird alleged that Iran remains the “biggest threat to global peace.”Hmmm.....Yup Canadians are renowned 'extremists'
