'Sometimes NATO Ally' Turkey looking into purchasing Russian missile defense systems.
'Sometimes NATO Ally' Turkey looking into purchasing Russian missile defense systems. (Bugun).
Russian official arms export firm Rosoboronexport has announced that they have signed several agreements with their Turkish counterparts and that it is even looking into purchasing the Russian Antey-2500 anti-ballistic missile defense system.
Anatoly Aksyonov, head of the Rosoboronexport delegation in attendance at the 2015 International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2015) held in Istanbul this week, told reporters on Friday that they had secured several agreements with their Turkish colleagues during the arms trade fair.
Not disclosing any information about the individual agreements, Aksyonov said there would be cooperation between both countries’ land, air and naval defense industries and noted that the agreements might be signed as soon as they returned from their holidays in May.
Deputy head of Rosoboronexport Sergei Goreslavskiy had announced earlier this week that Turkey had expressed interest in S-300VM "Antey-2500" anti-ballistic missile system. Goreslavskiy had mentioned such interest after Turkish Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz visited the Rosoboronexport stand at IDEF 2015 to get information about the S-300VM system as well as other Russian arms.
Turkey, a long-standing member of NATO, has provoked major controversy from the United States and the rest of NATO over its interest in purchasing defense systems from non-NATO countries. Turkey’s insistence on purchasing a USD 3.4 billion missile defense system from China despite countless NATO objections over security and compatibility of the weaponry has strained relations.
Media sources note that NATO will be similarly displeased with any such purchase from Russia.
Hmmm.....Just like their 'Buddy' Iran, How stupid do you have to be to not understand where all this is leading? NATO has a huge enemy in their midst growing a huge appetite.
