LEBANON - Expropriation of land inhabited mostly by Christians ordered by the government are likely to stir up sectarian conflicts. (Fides).

The possible confiscation of collectively owned land from the State near the Lebanese village of Aqoura (Jbeil district) is likely to stir up sectarian strife.

The tension around the sensitive issue of land control of the various religious communities that live in Lebanon is increasing again after the Ministry of Finance, led by the Shiite Ali Hassan Khalil, expressed his intention to make a decree signed in 2015 operational which provides for the expropriation by the State of the shared use of land adjacent in Aqoura, a village inhabited mostly by Maronite Christians, and other villages and towns of the district of Jbeil.

The issue, according to some analysts, is likely to trigger yet another feud with sectarian implications regarding the control of the land.

The potential conflict came to the fore on Tuesday, August 30, when the local authority was notified by the Ministry of the intentions to transform state-owned common land, until now considered as belonging to all the villagers.

The inhabitants of Aqoura, represented by lawyer Gaby Germanos, yesterday submitted to the Council of State a request for the annulment of the Ministerial Decree.

While Naufal Daou, a member of the general secretariat of the "March 14" political coalition, said to al-Markaziya agency that the expropriation represents "a confiscation of Christian goods by a Minister that has exceeded its prerogatives".

On his behalf, Minister Ali Hassan Khalil’s press office denied that the decree in question had to do with the collectively owned land, stating that the ministerial provision is aimed only at defending lands that are already property of the State from infringements and abuse.

There have been sectarian clashes in recent times around the control of land and real estate in Lebanon.

In autumn 2013, a pressing call to curb the misuse of land belonging to the Christians to build housing for the Muslims was launched by Talal al-Doueihy, leader of "the Lebanese Land, Our Land" Movement (see Fides 15/10/2013).

The appeal denounced in particular the case of Al-Qaa, a Christian village near Baalbek, in whose area large plots of land had been acquired by Muslims - Shiite and Sunni - as agricultural land, only to be destined to building housing estates to be sold to Lebanese and Syrian refugees belonging to their own religious communities.

Iran-backed militias have seized homes, businesses and cultural sites, including churches belonging to Baghdad's Christian communities, forcing individuals to resettle and forfeit all their belongings, according to members of the Christian members of the Iraqi Parliament.


The militias have targeted properties belonging to Christians, forcing individuals to leave the area, according to Christian community leaders, including representatives from the Assyrian, Chaldean and Syriac minorities, as well as the Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq who have condemned the attacks, calling them a form of ethnic cleansing aimed to rid Baghdad of its Christians.

"Their claim is that the property of a non-Christian is halal, meaning it can be seized," Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael Sacco said in an interview with the pan-Arab daily Al Hayat.

According to leaders, the seizures have been carried out in the upscale regions of Baghdad, where militia men have forced entry into homes and businesses with falsified documents.

"We are begging, once again, appealing to the conscience of government officials and authorities from Sunni and Shiite states in order to do something meaningful to safeguard the life and dignity and property of all Iraqis, because they are human," Sacco said.

The news was confirmed by Tom Harb, the co-chair of the Middle East Christian Committee, MECHRIC, who said Middle East Christian NGOs have long been reporting from Baghdad and Erbil that the Iranian-backed militias are pushing the Christians south of the areas controlled by ISIS, including Baghdad.

The paradox in U.S. foreign policy is that the current administration has shown a policy of partnering with Iran's regime and even releasing the funds to the regime to back these militia, while at the same time creating conditions on the ground in Iraq where they can ethnically cleanse the Christian community, Dr. Walid Phares, who is an adviser to members of the U.S. Congress, said to The Foreign Desk.

But the magical forests, appealing Indian communities, colorful towns and intriguing archeological sites – that serve as main tourist attractions – hide a political hell.
In the mid-1990s, a leftist resistance group which calls itself The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) made Chiapas its home. Its attempts to fight the Mexican Army repeatedly failed, but the Zapatistas are still very active in the district's rural areas. Chiapas is considered a dangerous place, where every home has an arms arsenal of its own; and like many other places in Mexico, Chiapas' streets have become the battlefield where the government and local drug lords wrestle for dominance.
Chiapas, however, harbors an even more sinister secret: It is also a hub of radical Islamist activity.
Catholic Mexico is in the midst of a crisis of faith. According to a local businessman, who asked to remain anonymous, it is widely believed that within a decade, Chiapas will be the first federal state in Mexico to turn its back on the Church.
"The Muslim missionaries are very active there," he said. "It's hard to know exactly how many people have converted to Islam over the past few years."
Official data suggests that Mexico is home to some 4,000 Muslims – a fraction in a country whose population numbers 115 million. Theoretically, this is a negligible number, but it is enough to cause concern in the United States – and Israel should be concerned as well.
US intelligence indicates that Mexico is home to some 200,000 Syrian and Lebanese immigrants – most of them illegal – who were able to cross the border via an extensive web of contacts with drug cartels, both in Mexico and in other countries in South America.
These cartel contacts smuggle illegal immigrants – including individuals affiliated with Iran, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda and other radical Islamist groups – into Mexico, placing them a virtual stone's-throw away from the United States.
Western intelligence agencies have been able to gather ample evidence suggesting that the drug cartels in Mexico – which are the de facto rulers of the northern districts bordering the US – are in cahoots with Islamic terror organizations, which are eager to execute attacks against American, Israeli, Jewish and western targets; but most of all, the Islamic terror groups are eager to make money, so they can fund their nefarious aspirations.
According to the indictment, Hezbollah is using Juma's cartel connections to minimize its dependency on Iranian funding. The international sanctions crippling Tehran's economy have taken a serious bite out of the $200 million in annual aid given to Hezbollah, but the latter's appetite for cash has only grown. Los Zetas' Beirut-based money man has reportedly helped the Shiite terror group meet its financial needs.
Iran denies any involvement in South America, but the US knows better. In 2010, a report commissioned by the House Committee on Intelligence found that the ties between Hezbollah and the Mexican drug cartels, as well as the Iranian link, were getting stronger.
The report found that Hezbollah was massively embroiled in drugs and money laundering deals, as well as in arms trafficking in and out of Mexico.
Furthermore, US intelligence concluded that Hezbollah has established sleeper cells, intelligence infrastructure and training bases in Mexico and other South American countries. The Shiite group is also helping the drug lords build smuggling tunnels under the US-Mexico border and satellite images show that they are nearly identical to the maze of tunnels running under the Gaza-Egypt border.
Hezbollah is also training the cartels' operatives in the dubious art of explosives, helping drug lords improve their bomb-making skills.
The committee found evidence that Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials pick up fake passports in Venezuela – a close ally of Iran – prior to infiltrating the United States.
Earlier this year, former DEA Chief of Operations Michael Braun told CBS News that Hezbollah "are masters in creating close relationships with criminal organizations around the world."
A recent book by Latin America expert Jon Perdue details the dangers the US and its allies face as a result of the presence of radical Islamic terror groups in South and Central America. According to Perdue, Iran's proxies have been around long enough "to pose an actual threat" to the US should Israel mount a unilateral strike on the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities.
The bottom line may prove to be a bitter pill to swallow for the US: It is very likely that in a few years, the US – much like Israel – will have to deal with its own Hezbollah presence, right across the border.Read the full story here.

He worked in Montreal for a Toronto-based company and became a citizen but in the mid-90s, he left Canada with his wife. Mr. Abid, who received a green card in 2001 by virtue of having married a U.S. citizen, owned a contracting company called Aspen Industries. “We only build the best,” the company website proclaimed. But after the U.S. economy collapsed in 2008, Mr. Abid struggled financially.
WHSV television reported he fell behind on his American Express payments to the tune of $22,000, and owed more than $44,000 on his truck. The bank foreclosed on the family home and his wife had to find a job. As his business was tanking, Mr. Abid began devoting more time to the Virginia Iraqi community, which was swelling following the Second Gulf War, several community members said. If Iraqis needed money for rent, they would go to Mr. Abid and he would hold fundraisers for them. He also started hosting Shiite prayer services at his construction company office. “He began to devote extreme amounts of time not to his business but to these people, which in and of itself isn’t bad,” said Sherwin Jacobs, a family friend and lawyer who represents Mr. Abid’s wife, Margot Kons, in the divorce proceedings.
“He became like their leader, their go-to person,” he said. “He was the one they looked up to and his businesses started to go.” He also “started to become, I don’t know if it was psychotic, paranoid, delusional? But there was a personality change,” he said. His wife thought he was going through some kind of post-traumatic stress as a result of the destruction unfolding in Iraq. Then he bought a 9mm handgun. When she found out he was having an affair with an Iraqi woman in the area, Ms. Kons went to Mr. Jacobs. The lawyer thought Mr. Abid held an unconventional view of divorce. He seemed to believe that, being a man, he could unilaterally end his marriage just by saying so. Mr. Jacobs summed up Mr. Abid’s perspective this way: “Who are you to divorce me? I am the man.” 
The divorce complaint, filed in February 2011, claimed Mr. Abid had denied he was committing adultery because his girlfriend was actually “his new wife.” 
Needing help with the case, the lawyer called Mr. Brown. On the morning of March 3, 2011, private investigator Greg Brown kissed his wife Debbie goodbye and left in his gray Honda Accord to serve divorce papers on Ali Abid, a 49-year-old Canadian who ran a contracting company in Harrisonburg, Va.
Two days later, Mr. Brown still hadn’t come home and the Harrisonburg police issued a press release asking if anyone had seen him. “Please everyone be on the lookout for him and keep him in your prayers,” his step-daughter, Christine Zampini, wrote on hburgnews.com, “Harrisonburg’s Community News Network.”
The next day, police found Mr. Brown’s 2007 sedan in the Valley Mall parking lot in Harrisonburg. Mr. Brown was in the trunk. He had been shot three times, once point blank in the back of the head. “It was an execution,” said Marsha Garst, the Commonwealth Attorney for Harrisonburg. “A very cruel execution, and absolutely unnecessary for a man who got paid next to nothing to serve divorce papers.” Police searched Mr. Abid’s home and found two recently spent 9mm bullet casings on the driveway. At last year’s Al-Quds Day, speakers compared Israel to cancer, waved yellow Hizbullah flags and erected large images of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian leader of the Islamic Revolution who started the day in 1979 to mark the last Friday of Ramadan.
This year, the “International Day of Al-Quds” say they will gather to “express solidarity with all the oppressed of the world” and to “particularly remember the innocent civilians of Palestine who have been, and continue to be victimized by the oppressive and racist Zionist regime.” Avi Benlolo, president and CEO of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, sent a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty Monday, asking that the government take “every step possible” to prevent the Al-Quds Day organizers from obtaining a permit allowing them to protest at Queen’s Park August 18, The Post reported. “Ontarians were shocked and embarrassed that a blatantly anti-Semitic event was held at the seat of the provincial government,” Benlolo wrote, pointing specifically to remarks made by Iranian activist Zafar Bangash at last year’s rally.
“At last year’s event, Bangash called for a Jihad against Jerusalem, whereby Islamic Law would be imposed upon Israel; he was in fact captured on video at the rally shouting, ‘Inshallah I see that day when we, the Muslims, will march on Palestine and liberate Palestine…under Islamic law.’ There is every reason to believe this year’s event would feature similar messages of hate,” Benlolo wrote.
In an interview with the National Post from London, Benlolo said Queen’s Park is not a “platform to espouse their hate.” “They can do it in a basement or in another institution. Why bring it to the government? It’s only because they want to gain legitimacy.”
Last year, the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs videotaped the event in order to document “evidence” of the rampant hate being promoted at the forum, media spokesperson Steve McDonald said. Last month, CIJA shared the video footage and their concerns with Ontario’s Sergeant-At-Arms at Queen’s Park, who approves applications for events held on the grounds of the legislature. The group has not yet heard whether the Al-Quds application has been approved or denied. “We don’t see this as a police issue, we see this as an issue for Queen’s Park to manage the use of the legislature’s grounds in an appropriate way and to prevent those grounds from being abused as a platform for hate,” McDonald said.

“More importantly, perhaps, [we want to] allow for the Canadian public to see for themselves the sort of radicalism that’s being imported to our country by a very small segment of Canadian society.” 

The Ontario legislature’s Sergeant-At-Arms Dennis Clark said they are “engaged in this application” process with the Al-Quds event organizers but would not elaborate further. “An application comes through us, we take a look at it and then our investigative unit meet with the organizers and go over that they’re subject to the rules on the grounds,” he said, when asked what the general parameters for an application would be. The Sergeant-At-Arms also works with Toronto Police to ensure protests and events at Queen’s Park are carried out in a lawful manner, he added, according to The Post. The ‘Free Al-Quds’ website says the international event will be held this year in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, plus London, England and 12 U.S. cities. The Jewish Defense League of Canada has planned a counter-protest for 2-4 p.m. on August 18, the same time as when the Al-Quds event is being launched at Queen’s Park. Read the full story here.

Tehran denies the charge and has condemned what it calls foreign interference in the affairs of its closest Arab ally, Syria. “The Saudi government has become the center of sedition in the region and a safe haven for terrorists,” hardline cleric Ahmed Khatami said during a sermon at Friday prayers. “They are taking seditionist acts in Syria ... I warn them that if they do not stop such actions, they will be burned with the fire they have created themselves,” Khatami said, according to ISNA. Shiite Muslim Iran backed popular uprisings which have removed leaders in Egypt, Libya and Yemen, but has steadfastly supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is a member of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Backed by Western countries, Riyadh has spearheaded Arab efforts to counter Assad’s suppression of a year-old uprising and to demand that he step down. In October, the United States said it had uncovered an Iranian-backed plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington. Iran denied any involvement. Riyadh suspects Tehran of backing unrest in neighboring Bahrain and supporting Shiite rebels in northern Yemen. Subhi Al-Tufeili: Since 1993, I have been saying that the Iranian policy will cause great harm to the Shiites especially, and that Iran must reexamine all its policies. Iran should unite the Muslim peoples rather than tear them apart, in an effort to bring about their annihilation.

The Iranian leadership adopted the wrong approach not only here, but in Tehran as well. The worst dictatorships do not do what is being done today in Tehran. They prevent people from speaking, they attack people. They do the worst things. I am very sad to say that this is in violation of the shari'a.

The Rule of the Jurisprudent is not part of the shari'a. It is a heretical doctrine that has been developed by some Muslim jurisprudents from the Safavid era to this day.

Estimates pin Kerry’s net worth somewhere between $700 million and $3.2 billion compared to Romney’s lower net worth of $202 million.Take a look at former Vice Presidential Candidate John Edwards’s 2003 tax returns, and you’ll find that he paid an astonishingly low rate of 5.1%. Seems a bit low for a man with a net worth hovering around $54.7 million.But, of course, Kerry and Edwards’ income tax rates were protected under lock and key by the mainstream media during the 2004 presidential race against President George W. Bush. Speaking of Bush, you’ll also never hear anyone mention the fact that he paid a rate of 27.7% in the same year.Tax rates aside, in yet another attempt to make something out of nothing, the media has been reporting relentlessly on Romney donating millions in cash and stocks to the Mormon Church, as if tithing to one’s church is somehow a negative. Thanks to donations like Romney’s, the Mormon Church is able to sustain a large philanthropic network and send young men on two year missions that provide extensive humanitarian aid to a countless number of people in need. If you call that bad, I’d hate to see what you call good.This much I can assure you—Romney’s millions donated to the Mormon Church did far more good than the $353 Al Gore gave to charity in 1997 or the $0, $820, $175, $2,039, and $0 Senator Kerry gave between 1991 and 1995. Contrast that to the $28,236, $31,914, and $31,292 George Bush gave between 1991-1993 when he was a mere private citizen. Fact: Using the relevant dates, that number is actually between 33,000 and 63,000.

Claim: “It’s not fair when foreign manufacturers have a leg up on ours only because they’re heavily subsidized.

Claim: “[M]y administration has put more boots on the border than ever before.”

Fact: The vast majority of that increase was proposed and implemented before Obama took office.

• Pentagon to slash spending by $260 billion through 2017.(HD).The Pentagon will unveil a five-year budget proposal this week that aims to implement $487 billion in spending cuts over the next decade by trimming the size of the military and canceling or scaling back some weapons programs. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta will outline a budget request for the 2013 fiscal year today that will cut $260 billion in spending through 2017, taking the Pentagon more than halfway to its target for the decade.Details about the 2013 spending plans have begun to emerge from sources familiar with the budget proposal despite the Pentagon’s efforts to keep its funding discussions secret until they are formally announced. The budget proposal is expected to eliminate thousands of military and civilian jobs over the next five years at a time when President Barack Obama is running for re-election against a field of Republicans who accuse him of being weak on national security.The proposed budget will terminate or scale back spending on dozens of weapons programs, including the Air Force’s high-altitude Global Hawk unmanned surveillance plane built by Northrop Grumman Corp and the Pentagon’s biggest weapons program, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, built by Lockheed Martin Corp.  But it will not tackle some $600 billion in additional spending cuts due to take effect in January 2013 after lawmakers failed to agree on $1.2 trillion in deficit-cutting measures.Officials said they would revisit the issue and address those cuts later if Congress did not take action this year. The United States said it would not allow that to happen.The escalating rhetoric and tensions have led to concerns about the potential for missteps between the adversaries that might spiral into a military confrontation that neither wants.But the report, financed by a grant from the United States Institute of Peace, said Iran had not made a decision to build a nuclear bomb. • Convicted Terrorist Hysen Sherifi Accused of Plotting to Behead Witnesses.(Fox).RALEIGH, N.C. – A North Carolina man sentenced to prison recently as part of a homegrown terrorist ring has been accused in a federal court document of plotting to kill witnesses who testified against him at trial.An affidavit unsealed in federal court Monday accuses Hysen Sherifi of plotting against the witnesses from his jail cell. Authorities say an FBI informant posing as a hit man met with Sherifi's brother and a female friend and accepted $5,000 and a photo of an intended victim.The informant soon befriended Sherifi, who requested help in hiring someone to kill three people who had testified against him at his trial, according to the affidavit. Sherifi specified that he wanted the witnesses beheaded and that he would be provided photos of the severed heads as confirmation of the deaths, according to the document.FBI agents have arrested the brother, Shkumbin Sherifi, and Nevine Aly Elshiekh, a school teacher. Now in federal custody at the New Hanover County Jail, each is charged with a felony count of use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire.Hysen Sherifi, 27, was sentenced to 45 years in prison earlier this month in what prosecutors described as a conspiracy to attack the Marine base at Quantico, Va., and targets abroad. Five others, including construction contractor Daniel Patrick Boyd, have been sentenced to federal prison terms for terrorism charges related to raising money, stockpiling weapons and training in preparation for jihadist attacks. . . .The Sherifi brothers and other family members emigrated from Kosovo following the wars that ravaged the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. A call to the Sherifi family home in Raleigh on Tuesday was not returned.Hysen Sherifi and others arrested in the terrorism conspiracy were members of the Islamic Association of Raleigh, the largest Muslim congregation in the Triangle. • Iran Set to Turn Off Oil Supply to Europe.(Spiegel).It's a move which has tit-for-tat written all over it, but one which could nonetheless have a serious impact: The Iranian government wants to present a bill to parliament this weekend calling for an immediate halt to oil deliveries to Europe. The move, with most reports citing the Iranian news agency Mehr, has come about in response to the EU agreement to impose sanctions against Iran, which were announced earlier this week.The sanctions banned any new contracts for buying oil from Iran, but allowed existing deals to continue until July in order to give countries time to find other sources. But that process is now at risk after the latest move from Tehran, a step the Iranian government had already threatened."If this bill is passed, the government will be forced to stop selling oil to Europe before the actual implementation of their sanctions," said Emad Hosseini, spokesman for the Iranian parliament's energy commission, reportedly said. The bill is set to become law on Sunday.The EU sanctions allow for oil deliveries from Iran until July 1. Any pre-empting of this timescale by Tehran could prove problematic for countries like Italy, Greece and Spain, who would need to urgently find new suppliers.China, meanwhile, a major importer of Iranian oil, has also criticized the EU sanctions. • Turkey drops heavily in press freedom rankings.(HD).Turkey took a big step backwards in press freedom rankings losing 10 places to be 148th out of 178 countries in the Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Index for 2011 made public yesterday.Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan came right at the bottom of the 10th annual list by the press freedom group, with the same clutch of European states - led by Finland, Norway and Estonia - at the top. Turkey’s fall came as a result of the pressure against journalists and media outlets. “Far from carrying out promised reforms, the judicial system launched a wave of arrests on journalists that was without precedent since the military dictatorship,” the report said on Turkey.“Control of news and information continued to tempt governments and to be a question of survival for totalitarian and repressive regimes,” said the Paris-based group.RSF said it was no surprise that the same trio of countries - Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan - were bottom of the list because they were “absolute dictatorships that permit no civil liberties”.“They are immediately preceded at the bottom by Syria, Iran and China, three countries that seem to have lost contact with reality as they have been sucked into an insane spiral of terror,” it said.Hmmmm.......only a 30 places away from the bottom.......Obama's best buddy.Read the full story here.

• Canada - Shafia murder trial to resume amid tight security after bomb scare.(Yahoo).KINGSTON, Ont. - The Shafia family murder trial is expected resume this afternoon after a bomb threat forced an evacuation at the courthouse in the morning.People have started returning to the courthouse but increased security measures are making for long waits to get inside.Those entering the building are being asked to show photo identification while metal detectors and security wands are also be used. There is only one entry point into the courthouse.While police would only say there was a ''security concern,'' a source told The Canadian Press the reason for the evacuation was a bomb threat."I can neither confirm nor deny in regards to specifically a bomb, but we are just stating at this point in time it is a security concern," Const. Steve Koopman said. "As you can see we're taking it extremely seriously."Koopman couldn't say if the security threat was related to the Shafia trial."I cannot say 100 per cent, I think it's relatively coincidental that today that Superior Court Justice (Robert) Maranger was going to charge the jury and this is the most high profile case in town," he said.Police said they were notified of the security threat at 9:35 a.m., prior to the start of the day's proceedings in the Shafia case. The building was completely evacuated shortly after police received the call and the three accused were taken offsite."I certainly think that we're going to take this as seriously as we need to," said Koopman. • Why Iran will not ‘come to its senses’.(DailyMail).By MelaniePhillips.War with Iran is a truly fearsome prospect.Its likely consequences would include attacks on US air bases from thousands of Iranian missiles, the unleashing of terrorist attacks within the US and Europe, the rocketing of Israeli towns from the tens of thousands of missiles trained on Israel from Lebanon, the closing of the Straits of Hormuz thus paralysing western oil supplies, and doubtless other horrors.But however fearsome this prospect, that of a nuclear-armed Iran is worse. The consequences are simply insupportable.A regime which has seen itself at war with the west ever since it came to power in 1979, and which has been involved in arguably every major terrorist atrocity against it, will be equipped with nuclear weapons to bring the west to its knees. Working as it does through puppet rogue regimes and terror organisations, it could perpetrate acts of nuclear terrorism – or threaten to do so.It could mount its long-threatened attempt to wipe Israel off the map, thus provoking a nuclear response to prevent a second genocide of the Jews. Last but by no means least, it will spark a nuclear arms race throughout the region, thus ensuring that nuclear weapons come under the control of some of the most unstable and belligerent regimes on earth. To all these threats and more, the west will be paralysed by Iran’s nuclear capacity, just as it is currently paralysed over North Korea.But the deeper problem is the west’s assumption that the Iranian regime is capable of ‘coming to its senses’ – its assumption that these are rational actors who ultimately will act in their own interest. Few in the west understand that, on the contrary, the Iranian regime is impervious to reason. Educated, intelligent and cunning they may be – but they are religious fanatics driven by an entirely different set of considerations. That’s what makes this situation so terrifying.As I have written over and over again, from the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei downwards the Iranian regime is dominated by people (adherents of a sect called the ‘Twelvers’) who believe that the Shia messiah, the Mahdi, will return to earth either as result of or to bring about the apocalyptic end of days. It is that apocalypse that they are intent upon facilitating. That is why the argument that ‘they wouldn’t dare launch a nuclear attack because they know half of Iran would be obliterated as a result’ is so fatuous. They would be happy if that were to occur.Reza Kahlili (a pseudonym) is reportedly a former CIA spy within the Revolutionary Guards. As he has written:‘Khamenei has been heard to say that the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, is near and that specific actions need to be taken to protect the Islamic regime for upcoming events. Mahdi, according to Shiite belief, will reappear at the time of Armageddon... Many in the Guards and Basij have been told that the 12th Imam is on earth, facilitated the victory of Hezbollah over Israel in the 2006 war and soon will announce publicly his presence after the needed environment is created.'... Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi, an influential cleric and a radical Twelver, previously had stated that Khamenei ascends to the sky every year to take direction from Imam Mahdi, and sources close to the cleric have disclosed that Khamenei has been ordered by Imam Mahdi to continue with the nuclear program despite worldwide objection as it will facilitate his coming.’Last December, Kahlili warned that the previous May Khamenei had ordered the Revolutionary Guards to speed up the nuclear-bomb program and arm Iran’s missiles with nuclear warheads. Now, he wrote, Khamenei had ordered the guards to prepare for war.What really threatens to bring the west to its knees is its own cultural hubris. Refracting everything in the world through the prism of its unshakeable faith in universal reason, it is incapable of recognising or understanding religious fanaticism – and insists instead upon treating the fanatic as a rational actor. Ironically, it is this belief in reason which has led the west to behave so irrationally in refusing to acknowledge the evidence of the mortal threat to itself posed by Iran -- and that there is no alternative to force if it is to be stopped. • On 25 January 2012 there's nothing for the Copts to celebrate.(OCN).The Coptic nationalists, together with the overwhelming majority of the Copts inside and outside Egypt, have no reason to celebrate the first anniversary of the 25th January 2011 revolution. The revolution which some Copts, indeed the Coptic nationalists, wanted has not happened – we cannot see a civilian, secular democracy in Egypt as we enter 2012. What we see, instead, is a military rule, run by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) working in tandem with the Islamists who want to convert Egypt into Islamic country and impose Sharia law on all. This is not it that we had wanted. It is fair to say that Egypt, and the Copts, are going from bad to worse – the new reality that emerged as a result of the 25 January 2011 is simply not bright.Since the coup d’état on 11 February 2011, the Copts have been exposed to increasing number of attacks by Islamists and, more ominously, by the Egyptian State itself, represented in its various security forces. • Turkey won't let NATO use its territory to attack Iran.(RN)(IsraelMatzav).President Obama's favorite Middle East leader will not allow NATO - of which his country is a member - to use his territory in an attack on Iran. Turkey, a member of NATO, will not give the Alliance territory for a military strike on Iran, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, RIA Novosti reports.The official added that Turkey has been agitating NATO to avoid attacks on neighbors of Turkey and would continue the efforts. • "Invasion" Seeks to Undermine Israel.(TIP).Palestinian activists plan to invade Israel on foot from neighboring Arab states as part of a "Global March to Jerusalem," a report issued Monday by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center said.Leaders of the Global March to Jerusalem (GMJ) say the event will take place March 30 and will involve "the crawling of hundreds of thousands of Arab and international supporters through the neighboring countries and into Israel…"Marchers from around the world will meet in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon GMJ's website said. Massive marches will also be organized in Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip toward Jerusalem. Organizers say the marches will be "peaceful," the Meir Amit report said, "but past experience … has taught that they have the potential for violence."And organizers acknowledge that they "aim to make this march a turning point in the nature of the confrontation, with the occupation having to face millions of protesters and demonstrators demanding Freedom for Palestine and its capitol Jerusalem."Activists involved in the march have ties to Hamas, including: GMJ spokesman Zaher Birawi is a Hamas activist who lives in the UK and has also served as a spokesperson for various Viva Palestina convoys. Birawi also serves in leadership positions for Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood affiliated organizations in the UK.Mohammed Sawalha is formerly a senior Hamas operational operative in the West Bank who fled to Britain. Sawalha played an active role in organizing the deadly May 2010 flotilla to Gaza. He is involved with the Muslim Brotherhood in the UK and is one of the UK signatories of the pro-Jihad February 2009 "Istanbul declaration."George Galloway, the brainchild of the pro-Hamas organization Viva Palestina, plans on joining GMJ. Galloway discussed GMJ on his show The Real Deal, aired on Iran's Press TV station this month.Iranian-born Paul Larudee is the co-founder of the California-based Free Palestine Movement and participated in the May 2010 flotilla to Gaza. • Foreign woman stripped of clothes, assaulted, in Egypt’s Tahrir Square.(BikyaMasr).CAIRO: A foreign woman was stripped and sexually assaulted on Wednesday evening in Egypt’s iconic Tahrir Square, one eyewitness said on Twitter and another confirmed in an email to Bikyamasr.com.The woman, who’s identity has not been revealed, was taken away in an ambulance after being assaulted for 10 minutes. Her husband reportedly was unable to intervene and witnessed the incident.“I saw the woman and then dozens of men surrounded her and started grabbing her, when she screamed for help some people came, but they were hit in the face,” wrote one witness.What happened next was “appalling,” said the trusted witness, who asked for anonymity. “The men just started tearing at her clothes and grabbing her body all over. When she fought back, they pushed her. It was chaos.”There were unconfirmed reports that the men “violated” her with their hands.The nationality of the woman is unknown at the current time.Throughout the day, sexual harassment towards women has been increasing and more and more reports of women being grabbed and groped began being reported.Activists called the attacks on women completely “unacceptable” and must be exposed no matter what. • In Bahrain, Worries Grow of Violent Shiite-Sunni Confrontation.(NYT).MANAMA, BAHRAIN — Mohammed Ibrahim, 19, a Shiite student at the University of Bahrain, says he has gotten used to the tear gas the police use to disperse protests, which he and his friends attend every Friday.Suspended for several months after the violent suppression of last year’s pro-democracy movement, he recently was allowed back on campus. “They had suspended me because I participated in demonstrations on the campus and there had been fights with some Sunni students,” Mr. Ibrahim said in an interview last week. Now he is back in school, but the situation between Shiite students like him and Sunni students is very “tense,” he said. “I don’t think any longer that peaceful demonstrations are enough,” he said. “I think we should fight the police back, when they attack us.” Mr. Ibrahim belongs to the 14th of February movement, a group that started with peaceful protests but that in recent weeks has seen some members calling on the Internet for violent protests to overthrow the government — and especially the ruling family.Each Friday, before heading to protests, Mr. Ibrahim, like many other young Shiites, drives to Diraz, a village on the northwest coast, to listen to the kingdom’s most influential Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Issa Qassim. On a Friday this month, the mosque was packed to overflowing with worshipers. Nearby hung a large banner portraying Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Until recently, Ayatollah Qassim preached peaceful protest, but last Friday his language changed. Criticizing police violence against female protesters, he said the police who attacked women could be attacked in return. “This is a really dangerous message to the government,” said Habib al-Marzouk, who was present in the congregation. “He said, ‘It is enough, we cannot sit silent and see how they are attacking our women.”’ Mr. Marzouk said some Shiite youth would take that as broad approval for violence against security forces. Obama is hardly the first president to be called an anti-Semite or hostile to Israel. In 1991, George H.W. Bush found himself the subject of withering Jewish criticism when he sought to delay $10 billion in loan guarantees for Israel unless Jerusalem agreed to a settlement freeze in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, said he remembers holding a news conference to denounce Jewish characterizations of Bush as Satan and evil.But the rhetoric and conspiracy theories against Obama seem to constitute an unprecedented level of vitriol, say many longtime observers of the Jewish political scene.“I’ve never seen as much enmity toward a president by American Jews as I do toward Obama,” said Morton Klein, the national president of the Zionist Organization of America. “I’ve never heard people say, as they say to me, 'I hate him.' ”After examining Obama's record four years ago and concluding that he was anti-Israel and an anti-Semite, I have seen nothing since to dissuade me of that conclusion.
