Israel Announces Ceasefire, Hamas Keeps Firing.(INN).U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Wednesday evening and asked him to agree to abide by a ceasefire with Hamas. Netanyahu gave his consent.
The terms of the ceasefire are not yet known in full but a partial text has been published.
Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman held a joint news conference Wednesday evening announcing the ceasefire. However, Hamas kept on firing rockets, and a siren sounded at 9:15 p.m. in Ashkelon and other locations.
Netanyahu said: "Eight days ago, Israel launched Operation Pillar of Defense, after attacks from Gaza that were carried out at a growing rate the last few months.
"The terror organizations assumed that we would abstain from an aggressive action, but they were wrong. We hit senior leaders, we destroyed thousands of rockets that were aimed at the South, and most of the rockets that were aimed at the center of Israel. We hit Hamas's control mechanisms.
Netanyahu said that Israel and the U.S. agreed to work together against smuggling of weapons that originate in Iran into Gaza.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that while terrorists are to stop their rocket fire, he expects there to be a "small tail," like in previous ceasefires. By this he means that there will be some more rocket fire for a while before the attacks stop.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr, speaking at a joint news conference in Cairo with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said the cessation of hostilities would begin at 9:00 p.m., local time (1900 GMT).
"The United States welcomes the agreement today for a ceasefire. In the days ahead, the United States will work with partners in the region to consolidate this progress," Clinton said.
Prime Minister Netanyahu's office confirmed the news earlier Wednesday evening, but its statement leaves room for the use of greater force if Hamas fails to abide by the terms of the ceasefire.
Demonstrators in Israel's South called on Netanyahu not to agree to a ceasefire, but to restore deterrence and security. A Channel 2 political analyst noted that the demonstrators are largely Likud voters and said Netanyahu will have a problem with these voters if he agrees to a ceasefire at present.Read the full story here, more here.

But... and it's a huge but. He wants Gaza turned over to 'moderate' 'Palestinian' President Mahmoud AbbasAbu Mazen and, so that this can be portrayed as Abu Mazen 'saving' the 'Palestinians' and to strengthen Abu Mazen's position, he wants Israel to immediately declare a 'Palestinian state' in wide swaths of Judea and Samaria, which would of course also be turned over to Abu Mazen.
As a bonus (not mentioned in the article), Abu Mazen would presumably then drop his appeal to the United Nations.
The Israeli government is said to be furious because if Israel does not agree, Obama will not back a ground operation, effectively a veto.

In response to Nasrallah’s remarks, senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi denied Iran was sending missiles to Hamas.
However, on Monday the leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad said that Iran has supplied Gaza “resistance” groups with weapons and missiles.
Ziyad Nakhleh told Iran’s state-owned Al-Alam Arabic news channel on Monday that the terror group had Fajr-3 and Fajr-5 rockets.
“These missiles have restored the Palestinian people their dignity,” Al-Alam quoted Nakhleh as saying.

Israeli missile-makers strive to meet Iron Dome demand.(Reuters). Israel sees its Iron Dome anti-rocket system as a noted success of its Gaza assault. The only problem is keeping up with demand for the interceptor missiles, their makers said on Tuesday.
"We've been working in non-stop shifts," said an official with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd, which developed the system. He declined to be named for security reasons.
Equipped with five of the boxed-shaped batteries, the Israeli military says it has fired 360 missiles since the start of operation "Pillar of Defence" last Wednesday, which it says is aimed at halting rocket fire out of the coastal enclave. Each interception costs $30,000 to $50,000, according to former Defense Minister Amir Peretz. Israel argues that proves cost-effective in preventing lethal strikes, which could trigger a vastly more expensive war.
Sometimes two missiles are used against incoming rockets. Prior to this week's fighting Israel had stockpiled the interceptors - whose exact quantity is a state secret.
"Outstanding success rates have been achieved so far," said Avi Leshem, an official with ELTA, a smaller firm involved in the project. He said company employees were working "night and day" to ensure the batteries stay in service.
The head of Israel's air defence corps, Brigadier-General Shahar Shochat, said this week that the Iron Dome units could continue fighting "as required".
An industry source familiar with production standards for such weapons, estimated that at full output a company like Rafael would be able to produce around 10 missiles a day.
The fifth Iron Dome unit, rushed through production and posted near Tel Aviv on Saturday, features improved capabilities for tackling longer-range rockets. Israel hopes to increase the range of Iron Dome's interceptions, from the current maximum of 70 km (45 miles) to 250 km.
Each battery costs Israel around $50 million, though the export price would likely be higher. And there is already "considerable interest" in the system overseas, ELTA said in a statement.

Five people suffered serious injuries, and two are in serious condition while three people are in moderate conditon. No one was killed. Twenty-one people have been evacuated to Icholov Hospital, most of them with lesser injuries. Others are being treated for emotional shock. Eyewitnesses said that that the terrorist boarded the bus, placed a suspicious package there and then fled. Police said arrested one suspect, but has denied any connection with the attack. Authorities said there was no advanced warning of a terrorist attack. No terrorist group has yet taken responsibility for the attack, but Islamic Jihad and Hamas have threatened to strike anywhere in Israel. Clinton and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made statements to the press shortly before they met one on one.
Netanyahu welcomed Clinton to Jerusalem and noted that Israel was fighting against terrorists who fire barrages of rockets against innocent civilians.
"One of the things that we are doing is trying to resist and counter a terrorist barrage which is aimed directly at our civilians and doing so by minimizing civilian casualties, whereas the terrorist enemies of Israel are doing everything in their power to maximize the number of civilian casualties," Netanyahu told Clinton. "Obviously, no country can tolerate a wanton attack on its civilians."
Secretary of State Clinton said, “President Obama asked me to come to Israel with a very clear message. America’s commitment to Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering. That is why we believe it is essential to de-escalate the situation in Gaza.
“The rocket attacks from terrorist organizations inside Gaza on these (Israeli) cities and towns must end and a broader calm restored," said Clinton.
"The goal must be a durable outcome that promotes regional stability and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians alike," she added.
The Secretary of State praised Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi for taking an active role in trying to achieve a ceasefire. “We appreciate President Morsi’s leadership. As a regional leader, Egypt” has the opportunity to promote the ceasefire process, she noted.
Netanyahu told Clinton he was ready to agree to a "long-term solution" as long as the rocket attacks from Gaza stopped.
"If there's a possibility of achieving a long-term solution for this problem by diplomatic means, we prefer it. But if not, I'm sure you understand that Israel will have to take every action necessary to defend its people," he said.

“We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima - the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.“There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire.”

Mr Sharon, who is also a major in Israel’s reserve forces, continued: “The images from Gaza might be unpleasant - but victory would be swift, and the lives of our soldiers and civilians spared.
“Either the Gazans and their infrastructure are made to pay the price, or we reoccupy the entire Gaza Strip. Otherwise there will be no decisive victory. And we’re running out of time - we must achieve victory quickly. This needs to end quickly - with a bang, not a whimper.”
He added: “If the government isn’t prepared to go all the way on this, it will mean reoccupying the entire Gaza Strip. Not a few neighbourhoods in the suburbs, as with Cast Lead, but the entire Strip, like in Defensive Shield, so that rockets can no longer be fired.”

Gaza truce delayed as Israel needs to respond to proposals: Hamas.(AA).A Hamas official said on Tuesday that Egyptian efforts to broker a truce with Israel had been held up because the Israeli government had yet to respond to proposals, indicating there would be no ceasefire until Wednesday at the earliest. “The Israeli side has not responded yet, so we will not hold a (news) conference this evening and must wait until tomorrow,” Ezzat al-Rishq, a senior Hamas leader, told Reuters.
“The truce is now held up because we are waiting for the Israeli side to respond,” he added in a short telephone interview. Previously, Hamas official Ayman Taha said Israel and Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have agreed to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that will come into force at midnight local (2200 GMT). "An agreement for calm has been reached. It will be declared at 9.00 p.m. and go into effect at midnight," Taha said. While Hamas earlier indicated that a truce could start later Tuesday, there was no confirmation from the Israeli side. But Israel said it will put a “temporary hold” on Gaza ground operation. 
On Tuesday, the Israeli army gave Gaza City residents leaflets ordering them to evacuate “immediately,” heightening fears that a ground invasion might be imminent. A Hamas official said chief Khaled Meshaal and his negotiators were currently in a meeting with the intelligence chief. “But it’s no secret we’re on the verge of an agreement,” he said.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will leave Asia on Tuesday to visit Israel, Egypt and Ramallah, stepping up U.S. efforts to avoid a worsening of the Gaza crisis, an official said. Clinton will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discuss the crisis with Egyptian and Palestinian leaders, after leaving President Barack Obama’s trip to Southeast Asia, said senior Obama aide Ben Rhodes. Obama made the decision to send Clinton after speaking to Netanyahu and twice to Mursi, after leaving East Asia summit meetings on Monday night, said Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser. News of Clinton’s trip came as Israeli leaders Tuesday discussed an Egyptian plan for a truce with Gaza’s ruling Hamas militant group, and after the death toll from Israeli raids on the enclave rose to more than 100. Senior Israeli ministers decided overnight to delay any ground invasion of the Gaza Strip to give Egyptian-led truce efforts a chance to work. "Our hand is outstretched in peace to those of our neighbors who want to make peace with us," Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office, "and the other hand is firmly grasping the sword of David against those who wish to uproot us from this country."

This is not the first time Netanyahu has invoked King David in a statement to the world. The last time was in his pivotal "red line" speech at the UN General Assembly in September, in which he warned against letting Iran achieve nuclear weapon capability.
About two hours after a rocket fired from Gaza crashed south of Jerusalem, causing no injuries, Netanyahu said that constant pounding by the Israeli air force had exerted a heavy toll on the Hamas arsenal.
"We have already destroyed thousands of rockets and missiles aimed at Israeli citizens, including most of the long-range rockets," he said. "We continue to attack Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the rest of the terror groups."
He later met U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.
AFP reported that Israeli ministers earlier decided to hold off from launching a ground incursion into Gaza to give Egyptian-led truce efforts a chance to work, according to a senior Israeli official.

"I was in Egypt during the weekend. This was crucial at a time when Israel is continuing its bloody attack against Gaza. The world has to understand and seriously think about it. Israel is conducting ethnic cleansing in the region. It is occupying Palestinian soil step by step and Palestinians are using their right to defense,” he told the parliamentary group meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), adding that they were obliged to take action over the ongoing events in Gaza.
"We have to struggle either with our hand, either with our tongue or with our heart,” he said. "If we're going to die, we have to die bravely like a man." The prime minister also called on the West to do more. "I'm appealing to the West. Nobody can say Israel is conducting self-defense. Israel is terrorizing the Middle East. ‘No Twitter for Terrorists’: pro-Israel group demands Hamas tweet ban.(AA).A Christian pro-Israel group has kicked off an online campaign demanding that microblogging site Twitter ban members of Hamas from using the service.
The group, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), hoped to drum up support from more than its 1 million members amid an ongoing deadly conflict between Israel and Palestinians.
The latest violence has claimed more than 100 lives in Gaza. Israel launched a massive air campaign on the Strip since last Wednesday with the declared goal of deterring Hamas’ rocket attacks.
CUFI, the largest pro-Israel group in America, begun placing their names on a letter to Twitter that demands the company “observe both the United States law and your own Terms of Service by immediately banning Hamas, the Izzadeen Al-Qassam Brigades and any related entities from operating Twitter accounts (e.g. @AlqassamBrigade),” reported the U.S.-based WND news website.
Both the Israeli army spokesperson (@IDFspokesperson) and @AlqassamBrigade began trading insults over Twitter over the past week.
On Wednesday, the IDF announced its attacks on Hamas via Twitter: “We recommend no Hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead.”
The message prompted a response from Hamas, with the @AlqassamBrigade tweeting: “Our blessed hands will reach your leaders and soldiers wherever they are (You Opened Hell Gates on Yourselves).”
The tweet was reposted (retweeted) on the microblogging network over 600 times.
Meanwhile, CUFI warns that such messages should be prohibited, pointing at the U.S. designation of Hamas as foreign terror group, which they argue should make it illegal for any U.S. corporation to provide “material support.” “By allowing Hamas to have a Twitter account, you are providing it with an important ‘service’ and extremely effective ‘communications equipment’ which are central to its primary mission of terrorizing the Israeli people and using civilian deaths to score political points,” the CUFI said in the letter to Twitter which will also be sent to the local office of the United States Attorney, the report states.
The letter also notes that Twitter’s own Terms of Service limits the operations to those who “are not a person barred from receiving services under the laws of the United States.”Read the full story here.
