After a 10-day aerial campaign aimed at halting Hamas rocket fire on Israeli cities, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on Thursday to order a ground offensive in Gaza, as a second stage of Operation Protective Edge launched July 8.
“My and the defense minister’s instruction to the IDF, after the approval of the cabinet, is to prepare for a significant expansion of the ground operation,” Netanyahu said Friday morning.
Netanyahu said that air strikes alone could not deal a sufficient blow to the tunnels riddling Gaza, so a ground assault was needed.
“Last night, our forces began a ground operation to hit the terror tunnels crossing from Gaza into Israel’s territory,” he told a special cabinet session, broadcast live on television.
