In his first public speech addressing tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters, Morsi promised Saturday to work to free Omar Abdel-Rahman, the spiritual leader of men convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. ‘I will do my best to free all detainees, including Dr. Omar Abdel-Rahman,’ he said, pointing to a group of protesters holding a poster of the spiritual leader of men convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Supporters have called for the sheik to be repatriated to Egypt on humanitarian grounds. Morsi, a 60-year-old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister and a former air force general, in a runoff race that deeply polarized the nation. Top Iranian Commander Warns Europe about Al-Qaeda's Revival in Mediterranean.(Fars).Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi warned the European countries about the revival of the terrorist al-Qaeda group in Southeast Mediterranean region, describing it more dangerous than even atomic weapons. "The Wahhabies, who consider the followers of all sects and branches of Islam as infidels and their killing as halal (permitted religiously), naturally will not ignore killing the Christians and Jews," Firouzabadi warned on Monday. He said that the world arrogance, spearheaded by the US, which itself created the Taliban and the al-Qaeda and was then hurt by the two and now claims that it is fighting the al-Qaeda in Pakistan, is actually reviving the al-Qaeda terrorist group in Syria and Lebanon. Cautioning that a big strategic danger is being posed to the world, Firouzabadi said, "The danger of the al-Qaeda's revival on the Southeastern coasts of the Mediterranean to Europe is bigger than the danger of atomic weapons."
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country. Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes. The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad. In October, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria. Earlier reports said that Qatar, supported by the US, funded an infamous al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist and sent him to Syria at the head of a team to stir unrests in the country before his reported death, informed sources revealed. Informed sources said that the Qatari team of terrorists had entered Syria form the country's Northern borders with Lebanon, adding that the terrorists were led by Abdel-Ghani Jawhar, an al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist, who was contracted by Qatar to lead the team for a $4 million payment.
Abdel-Ghani Jawhar, Lebanon's most wanted militant terrorist, was active in Syria, the sources said, adding that he was organizing suicide attacks and assisting rebel groups in the Arab country before his alleged death. The Examiner quoted a Telegraph report on April 25, alleging that Abdel-Ghani Jawhar was killed while planting bombs for the rebel movement in Syria in his attempts to kill people. The report raised renewed concerns about the deadly influence of Sunni radicals in the armed rebel groups being funded by the United States to overthrow President Assad of Syria. According to the Telegraph, the terrorist was killed in Qusayr, near the city of Homs, which is literally crawling with extremist and terrorist agents hired and contracted by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Jawhar was the head of Fatah-al-Islam, a militant group that had fought the official Lebanese army and other militias. The group has ties with al-Qaeda, and is certainly part of a wider network of militant Sunni groups involved in the Syrian opposition Fatah-al-Islam, fights under the black flag of al-Qaeda.
The remarks came days after the US daily, Washington Post, reported that the Syrian rebels and terrorist groups battling the President Bashar al-Assad's government have received significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks, a crime paid for by the Persian Gulf Arab states and coordinated by the United States. The newspaper, quoting opposition activists and US and foreign officials, reported that Obama administration officials emphasized the administration has expanded contacts with opposition military forces to provide the Persian Gulf nations with assessments of rebel credibility and command-and-control infrastructure.
According to the report, material is being stockpiled in Damascus, in Idlib near the Turkish border and in Zabadani on the Lebanese border. Opposition activists who two months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said this week that the flow of weapons - most bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military in the past - has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other Persian Gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month. Recent reports coming from Syria suggested that various enemy plots are underway to spoil Annan's peace mission in Syria to bring the Muslim country back into turmoil and pave the way for an overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government. The explosion took place at al-Sabeen square, near the presidential palace. Security forces in Sanaa have closed the area. The parade was scheduled for Tuesday, marking Yemen’s national day, President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi was due to attend, a police source said. The bomber, dressed in military uniform, detonated his explosives in the middle of battalion of soldiers rehearsing for an army parade to mark the 22nd anniversary of the unification of north and south Yemen, an official said. Witnesses said human remains were scattered across the site of the blast, according to AFP. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the blast which according to witnesses was heard across the city, causing panic among residents. Yemen’s defense minister, Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, was present at the time of the explosion but escaped unharmed, the official told AFP. It remains unclear if the parade will take place as planned. Monday’s attack is most deadly since President Hadi took power in February with a pledge to fight al-Qaeda’s growing presence in the county. Hamza Bin Laden Osama’s son a.k.a. "the Crown Prince of Terror” may be hiding in Pakistan.

Hamza Bin Laden Osama’s son a.k.a. "the Crown Prince of Terror” may be hiding in Pakistan.(TN).

LAHORE: Osama bin Ladenís elder son, Hamzah bin Laden, who is described by the US intelligence community as the crown prince of terror, being the most militant son of the slain al-Qaeda chief, was possibly living at a safe house in Peshawar when his father was hunted down and shot dead by the US Navy SEALs at his Abbottabad hideout on May 2, 2011.

Well placed diplomatic circles in Islamabad say the American intelligence community has been looking into Hamzah bin Laden hís possible presence in Peshawar since the May 2 raid last year during which the US Navy SEALs took a trove of documents from bin Ladenís Abbottabad compound.

The Americans have already made public some select letters to and from bin Laden dated between 2006 and 2011 which were recovered from his hideout and which give a partial view of what the al-Qaeda leadership was thinking and plotting during its years on the run. According to one such letter, feeling concerned about the security measures for his elder son Hamzah bin Laden, Osama had asked a senior military commander of al-Qaeda to facilitate the establishment of a safe house in Peshawar for Hamzah.

Born in Saudi Arabia in 1989, Hamzah is the son of Khairiah Sabar, one of bin Ladenís three wives who were living in the Abbottabad compound at the time of his killing. Hamzah is said to be the spitting image of his father; in jihadi videos, the similarities in their facial features are accented by the camouflage vest, white turban, and automatic rifle he sports, so that he resembles a scaled-down, baby-faced version of the al-Qaeda chief. 
Suspecting that Hamzah and his mother were under watch, Osama had directed Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, a senior al-Qaeda commander [who had been operating from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) of Pakistan at that time] that the security of his son and wife should be given extra care. Bin Laden apparently felt that Peshawar was safe enough to hide one of his favorite sons who was reportedly being groomed as the future ameer of al-Qaeda. As per the letter dated October 21, 2010, bin Laden had advised his chief of staff, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, to relocate his fighters from Waziristan to Afghanistan. He had then asked Atiyah to facilitate the establishment of a safe house in Peshawar for his son, Hamzah bin Laden. The letter, which shows that Osama was much concerned about security precautions for Hamzah, also expressed distrust for Pakistanís premier spy agency ñ the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

Osama wrote in his letter to Atiyah (who was eventually killed in a US drone attack in Pakistan on August 22, 2011): ìn your letter, you talked about your relationship with Abu-Salman al-Baluchi. I know that he is good Mujahid and got detained in the past, but some of the Baluchi people that he knows work for the Pakistani intelligence. Therefore, I advise you to be careful and not talk to him about your news and secrets. Also, for that reason, my son Hamzah should not be at his place or anywhere near him. Regarding Hamzah and his mother, I wish you take all the security precautions that were mentioned before in order to disrupt surveillance on him.

He should move only when the clouds are heavy. Then, Um-Hamzah goes to the middle-man on my side. I asked him to make all the remaining arrangements. I also asked him to make sure that they read the letter before they go in order to alert them to some security precautions including not taking with them any of the things that they had in Iran, such as their suitcases.
As for Hamzah, if you find my companion that we talked about, please send him to Peshawar and the surrounding area and ask him to arrange a house that can hold two families in addition to his family. He should stay there with Hamzah. If you did not find him yet, then please have a trusted Pakistani brother accompany him. Make sure to tell Hamzah that I am of the opinion that he needs to get out of Waziristan if he is there, and he should not go there if he is not there. What I said regarding Hamzah applies to Uthman and Muhammad if they come from Iran.The letter shows that Hamzah and some other members of the bin Laden family had reached Pakistan from Iran where they had been living in a secret compound outside Tehran.
Khairee Hussain, one of Osama bin Ladenís three wives, six of his children, and 11 of his grandchildren had fled to Iran from Afghanistan before the 9/11 terror attacks. Khairee Hussain, bin Ladenís eldest wife, who had joined him at his Abbottabad compound a few months before the American raid, is the suspected informer whose revelations led to the May 2 operation. During questioning by the Abbottabad Judicial Commission, Khairee claimed to have crossed the Pak-Iran border, then heading to Waziristan from where she was taken to Abbottabad.

A year after the 2011 raid that killed Osama, the American and Pakistani intelligence agencies are not only clueless about Hamzah bin Laden but also about his supposed safe house in Peshawar, if it was ever set up in accordance with bin Ladenís desire. Well-informed sources in Pakistani intelligence community say Hamzah keeps moving in and out of Afghanistan and Pakistan, just like al-Qaeda chief Dr Ayman Al Zawahiri and many other key leaders of the terrorist group. 
Hamzah is wanted by the Americans for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities directed against the US-led Allied Forces in Afghanistan. In a 2005 videotape, titled The Mujahideen of Waziristanî, Hamzah was shown participating in an al-Qaeda assault against the Pakistani security forces in South Waziristan.

In September 2007, it was reported that Hamzah was again seen in the tribal belt that encompasses the Pak-Afghan border region, playing a major role with al-Qaeda forces. In July 2008, yet another video featuring Hamzah was posted on an al-Qaeda-linked website to mark the third anniversary of the July 7, 2005, London bombings, calling for the destruction of the United States and United Kingdom. And last but not the least, the slain chairperson of the PPP Ms Benazir Bhutto had named him as the leader of one of a number of gangs plotting to kill her. In a posthumous autobiography, Bhutto had stated that she believed Hamzah was plotting her assassination. Hamza, who was born in Saudi Arabia in 1989, is perhaps the most militant scion of Osama’s family. Egypt's new foreign minister, Nabil al-Arabi, said Tuesday that his country wants to promote ties with Tehran and that Cairo no longer sees Iran as its enemy. "Iran is a state in the region, and we have had long-term historical ties with it over the different periods," al-Arabi told a press conference. "We will turn over a new leaf with all states, including Iran." The foreign minister had no definitive answer to whether Egypt planned to open an embassy in Tehran, however. No love was lost between the deposed regime of Egypt's former president, Hosni Mubarak, and that of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who saw Mubarak as too closely connected with Western powers and Israel. Al-Arabi was also asked about Hezbollah, of which he said, "Hezbollah is part of Lebanon's composition, and we see this as an internal matter… If any party wishes to have ties with Egypt there will be nothing preventing us from talking, but we will not become involved in internal matters."Al-Arabi has also been known as a vocal critic of Israel. • Speaker.Gov.Washington Dems’ ‘Marching Orders’? Root for a Government Shutdown.The Democrats who run Washington are desperate to distract from the fact that – while House Republicans have passed a funding bill for the remainder of the year that cuts spending – they have not passed a bill and not announced a credible plan.

As part of that distraction campaign, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was overheard giving ‘marching orders’ to other Democratic Senators to call the GOP ‘extreme’ shortly after former DNC Chairman Howard Dean said that Washington Democrats should be ‘quietly’ rooting for a government shutdown. Clearly, Sen. Schumer missed the “quietly” part.

The fact is that Republicans’ goal is to cut spending in order to create a better environment for job creation, not to shut down the government. The only folks talking about a shutdown are Democrats like Sen. Schumer, who believe they will benefit politically, as Dean explained: “From a partisan point of view, I think it would be the best thing in the world to have a shutdown.”When it comes to the government shutdown that Democrats are now actively rooting for, here are the facts :

GOP leaders have been abundantly clear: Our goal is to reduce spending, not shut down the government.

The House has passed H.R. 1 to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year while also cutting spending by $61 billion; the Senate has failed to pass any bill and has yet to come up with a credible plan. As a result, there has been no coherent position from Democrats making negotiation difficult, if not impossible.

H.R. 1 included numerous policy provisions, a routine part of the appropriations process. President Obama has signed hundreds of them into law in the past and voted for hundreds of them when he was a senator. Likewise, Vice President Biden, Democratic leaders in the Senate, as well as Leader Pelosi & Whip Hoyer, have voted for thousands of appropriations policy riders during their careers in Congress. While Democrats can publicly “refuse” to consider adding any policy provisions to a final agreement, that is simply not a credible position given their past voting records.

Republicans have passed two short-term CRs to fund the government for short periods of time while also cutting $10 billion in spending, forcing Democrats to concede to real spending cuts.

Republicans have been honest and straightforward throughout this process. In the election, the American people made it clear that Congress must focus on cutting spending, and Republicans pledged to make significant spending cuts for the remainder of this fiscal year. The Democrats have continued to defend the status quo and refuse to listen to the American people.

We’re only in this mess because of the Democrats’ historic failure to pass, or even offer, a budget last year. The Democrats have completely abandoned all efforts to control spending in Washington. In contrast, Republicans are listening to the American people and fighting for their priorities: cutting spending and creating jobs.Read the full story here.

Every gay person I knew was appalled by those protestors who’d entered the church and disrupted the service, not just because they were morally wrong, but also because their action could hardly have been more counterproductive. The Religious Right depicted gay people as enemies of religion; the disruptive actions by those members of ACT-UP only seemed to confirm that image. (In fact many of the people who acted most outrageously that day later turned out to have been devout gay Catholics motivated not by hatred of religion but — quite the opposite — by a frustration with Church officials’ views that was intense precisely because their love for the Church was so intense.)

Okay, cut from New York in 1989 to London in 2011. The stakes are higher — much higher. The mosques in Britain’s capital aren’t just refusing to hand out condoms or instruct gay believers in how to have safe sex. (Imagine!) No; they’re preaching to their ever-growing congregations in that increasingly Muslim city what Islam’s holy books teach about homosexuality — namely, that gays deserve to be executed. This has been going on for years, of course. The latest twist — and it will certainly not be the last — is that in February the East End, a neighborhood where many gays live but that is fast becoming a Muslim enclave, began being papered with stickers. They depicted a rainbow flag placed within a black circle and crossed out by a diagonal black line on which were printed the words “Gay free zone.” And they featured two quotations from the Koran. One of them read: “Arise and warn.” The other: “And fear Allah; verily Allah is severe in punishment.”Now, this could be dismissed as a nasty prank by some isolated, harmless jerk with too much time on his hands. But to do that would be dangerous. For the sentiments expressed on those stickers are widespread among Muslims in the East End, and indeed among Muslims throughout London, Britain, and Europe generally. Further, the lawmakers, joined by civil rights leader the Rev. Joseph Lowery, aim to dash any hopes of a Milton County.

The lawsuit, filed in a North Georgia U.S. District Court Monday, claims that the state circumvented the normal legislative process and set aside its own criteria when creating the “super-majority white” cities within Fulton and DeKalb counties. The result, it argues, is to dilute minority votes in those areas, violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution.“This suit is based on the idea that African Americans and other minorities can elect the people of their choice,” said Democratic State Sen. Reasonably priced [transportation ensuring us] complete respect.' "The above is not an imaginary scenario or the dream of someone who has lost her mind, but the hope of many of the girls in Egypt, who suffer more and more [when using public] transportation in the country. The realization [of these hopes] has become something simple and attainable since the January 25 Revolution.

"Until the idea of such a campaign spreads throughout the country, here are some suggestions for you [women], so that you need not sacrifice your modesty if forced to use mixed transportation:

1. "If you are forced to sit in the rear seats, put your bag on the seat beside you until [another] girl boards. Then smile at her and clear the seat beside you for her. Obviously, she will come and sit next to you.
2. "If you cannot avoid having a man sit next to you, place some divider between you – your bag, a book, a wallet, or any other separation. The man might wonder at the divider you placed between the two of you and express amazement or ridicule, but ignore all this. Do not be embarrassed and do not try to remove the divider or justify your position. If matters reach a point where he asks you to remove it, tell him, with all due respect, 'I am sorry, but this is the maximum [I am willing to allow].'
3. "During the ride in the vehicle, keep yourself occupied with anything that will distract you from those around you – reading the Koran or a book, asking forgiveness [from Allah], contemplating or thinking deeply, [and so on].
4. "If you want to get off at your stop, do not relinquish your right to alight with modesty. [Insist] that anyone in your way get off [first] so that you can pass without touching a man...
5. "Keep from sitting between two men, no matter who they are, because this might put you in a very embarrassing situation in which you will be unable to take any measures of security... Otherwise, ask them to sit next to each other and sit in the third seat.
6. "If you must ride a minibus or a public bus, which I do not at all recommend, except in very few circumstances, [you must]:

a) "Try to schedule [your trip] for a holiday, when [public transportation] vehicles are empty, or during off hours, such as early in the morning.

b) "Board at the first stops, so that you will have room to sit, and get off at the last stop, without rubbing against any men in the aisles.

c) "[If you have nowhere to sit,] get off in the middle of [the bus line], but insist that all the men standing in your way get off [first]. In many cases, you will face resistance, but insist that they get off. Tell them you do not have enough room to pass between them, that they must get off quickly, and that it is only a matter of a few moments. Allah willing, you will find someone honorable among them who will tell those around him to get off and make way for you.

d) "If your salary enables you [to buy two tickets], try to sit by the driver and take up both [front] seats for yourself. What a relief it will be not to rub against any men. Give yourself a rest from all the suffering you have experienced [in the past] by keeping the proper distance from any man.

7. "You must first and foremost pray to Allah to protect you and guard you... As long you take all [necessary] measures, pray to Allah, and rely on Him, it is impossible that Allah should bring shame upon you...

• Ronald Reagan statue to be unveiled in Grosvenor Square.A statue of Ronald Reagan is to be unveiled in London's Grosvenor Square, as part of a year of celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of the former US president.The 10 foot bronze will be positioned on a pedestal close to the American Embassy, and stand alongside existing statues of two other 20th Century US leaders, Dwight Eisenhower and Franklin D Roosevelt. The Embassy is moving to a new location next year, but the statues will remain in Mayfair.With the unveiling scheduled for July 4, US Independence Day, the Ronald Reagan Foundation has invited Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron to attend the ceremony. Condoleezza Rice, the former US secretary of state who worked for the Pentagon during Mr Reagan's presidency, will represent Nancy Reagan, 89, who will be following proceedings from her Californian home. "President Reagan always referred to the United States' special relationship with Great Britain, especially his personal friendship with Baroness Thatcher," said Rob Bauer, director of external affairs for the Ronald Reagan Foundation. "The Reagan Foundation commissioned the statue to honour that partnership and to celebrate an enduring alliance." The statue is to be created by Chas Fagan, the American sculptor who created a likeness of Mr Reagan for the Capitol Rotunda in the US Congress. The Foundation, which is funding the work, hopes that the statue will have as much impact as the 2009 US version.Mrs Reagan cried as the image was revealed. It closes with a discussion of how the local mosque is trying to save the kids.Here is one segment as related by a local policewoman (emphasis mine):Jeanine Brudenell, a Minneapolis police officer who has focused on Somali gangs and crime trends for five years and became the department liaison with the community in 2008, said Somali gangs have had a presence in Minneapolis since 2000. Gang activity began growing around 2004, when a 32-year-old Somali woman was murdered during a botched robbery. Brudenell said aggravated robberies increased in 2005 and 2006. And in 2007 and 2008, there were seven gang-related killings in a 10-month period.“A lot of the crime was being committed against people in their own community. Somali suspects were on the whole victimizing Somali people,” she said, partly because of the dense neighborhoods in which Somalis live.There are seven Somali gangs in Minneapolis, and a total of about 200 documented Somali gang members and associates, she said — about 10 percent of the roughly 2,100 documented active gang members in the Minneapolis Police Department’s system. • Massive fireball in Ohio as train carrying over 300,000 gallons of ethanol bursts into flames.A massive fire is raging out of control in Ohio today after part of a train carrying ethanol derailed and burst into flames.Fire fighters at the scene are battling to try to tame the inferno which emergency crews say will continue to burn into this evening.The explosion and resulting fireball could be seen for miles around, with experts estimating that 320,000 gallons of highly flammable liquid has caught fire.The crash happened between 2am and 3am this morning while the train was travelling through Hancock County.It is not yet known what caused the derailment, but the area had experienced heavy snow fall in the last 24 hours.Emergency officials say around 18 of the trains 62 tanker cars derailed before bursting into flames.The remaining train cars have been separated from the burning wreck.Around 20 local residents were evacuated from the area early this morning and have been put up in a nearby church while the blaze is brought under control.Hours after the crash the flames remained so intense that emergency crews were forced to remain at least a mile for safety reasons.Earlier this morning, fire fighters were trying to determine whether to pour foam onto the blaze or let it burn out.Read and see the full story here.

On Sunday, Iran's broadcasting authority forbade television channels in the country to air cooking shows featuring "Western" dishes. As it turns out, the dozes of official TV stations in Iran currently feature shows that offer their viewers recipes for Italian and French dishes, an apparently grave sin in the Islamic republic. "Television should show viewers abroad and Persian speakers the great and important achievements of the Islamic revolution," the broadcasting authority's deputy director, Ali Darabi, was quoted as saying as he explained the move. The decision was taken ahead of "Islamic Revolution Day," which will mark the 32nd anniversary of the Persian shah's downfall. • BREAKING NEWS: Two students injured after shootings at L.A. high school.A teenage student was arrested today after two classmates were injured in a bizarre gun accident at a California school.The 18-year-old student brought a gun in a backpack to Gardena High School, a suburb of Los Angeles, and it reportedly went off by mistake when he dropped the bag on a desk.One 15-year-old female classmate was hit in the head and was undergoing emergency surgery. Her condition was described as critical.The shooting was reported at 10.30am local time. Gardena police and Los Angeles Unified School District police officers are on the scene.A second student, a 15-year-old male, was also hit in the neck by the bullet and was said to be stable in hospital.It is understood that both injuries came from a single bullet. The would be gunman fled to a nearby classroom.TV news pictures showed police subduing the teen, dressed all in black, outside a classroom door.The student who brought the gun to school said he was sorry after the gun discharged according to Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon. He is on his first-ever visit to the PA, but an Israeli Foreign Ministry strike prevented the preparations for his planned trip to Israel and has barred him from meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.Media touted Medvedev’s recognition, but it was déjà vu. "Russia stated its position on this issue in the 1980s, in the last century, and we fully support the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to the establishment of an independent, united and viable state with east Jerusalem as its capital," the Russian leader said in Jericho, where he dedicated a Russian-funded museum.Medvedev is scheduled to meet with Abbas in Ramallah on Wednesday. The PA is counting on Russia to join several Latin American countries who have announced their recognition of the PA based on its demands for sovereignty over all parts of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria that were restored to Israel in the Six-Day War in 1967. Only Chile did not mention borders in its recognition announcement.Following Abbas' failure to force Israel's acceptance of all his preconditions and demands before negotiations begin, he is turning to the United Nations.The PA’s first step in its new strategy is to ask the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution declaring that all Jewish communities in areas claimed by the Palestinian Authority are illegal settlements, although this is not so according to international law. Army studies methods of using topography to safeguard critical supplies against incoming missiles.In an effort to protect sensitive equipment and advanced munitions, the IDF has drawn up intricate plans to dig massive bunkers inside mountains throughout the country to thwart enemy missile fire, The Jerusalem Post has learned.The multi-million-dollar plan was created by the IDF’s Logistics and Technology Directorate, and is set to receive a dedicated budget from the General Staff in the military’s next multi-year plan – expected to go into effect in 2012.Under the plan, next year the IDF will begin building a relatively small bunker of several thousand square meters inside a mountain whose location is classified. If the project is successful, it will enter the next phase, which includes building several more bunkers over the next few years.Following the Second Lebanon War against Hizbullah in 2006 – and amid predictions that IDF bases will be targeted in a future conflict – the Logistics and Technology Directorate formulated the plan, dubbed “Operational Continuity.” Its primary objective is to disperse important equipment into mountain bunkers across the country.“We work under the assumption that in the next war, IDF bases will be targeted,” a senior officer said on Monday.“At the same time, we need to be able to continue to supply troops who will be operating behind enemy lines, and have a limited amount of supplies with them.”The army will also bolster protection of sensitive locations – such as warehouses where advanced weapons are stored. Predator Drones once used for combat operations in war torn areas of the world are now scaled for retail consumption and being deployed in US cities to spy on its own citizens. Welcome to 1984. These are not the big super expensive drones used in Afghanistan and they dont carry weapons, but they are quite the spy in the sky tool. [..]The Miami-Dade Police Department could soon become the first police department in the country to employ unmanned drones, a technology that until now has been used for official purposes only in war zones and along the country's border. The department acquired two T-Hawk Micro Air Vehicles, manufactured by Honeywell, in August 2009, and has been testing and training with them since. It is now in the third phase of a three-phase testing program, and plans to apply soon to the FAA for final approval to use the drones in operations. Unlike the famous Predator-B drones, which have been used to kill militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan, T-Hawks are much smaller, carry no weapons and are intended for short, targeted tasks. Cohen said each T-Hawk is approximately the size of a "small office garbage can." On its website, Honeywell boasts that the T-Hawk is "a combat-proven unmanned micro air vehicle that can be quickly deployed. T-Hawk is easy to assemble and can be airborne within 10 minutes. It is simple to fly with minimal training. With unique hover and stare capability, T-Hawk supports advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) with real time video documentation." According to the company, T-Hawks can fly as high as 10,000 feet, at speeds up up to 50 miles per hour, with 46 minutes of endurance.There comes a point when spying on your own citizens becomes overtly invasive. • Scientists warn California could be struck by winter ‘superstorm’.A group of more than 100 scientists and experts say in a new report that California faces the risk of a massive "superstorm" that could flood a quarter of the state's homes and cause $300 billion to $400 billion in damage. Researchers point out that the potential scale of destruction in this storm scenario is four or five times the amount of damage that could be wrought by a major earthquake.It sounds like the plot of an apocalyptic action movie, but scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey warned federal and state emergency officials that California's geological history shows such "superstorms" have happened in the past, and should be added to the long list of natural disasters to worry about in the Golden State.The scientists built a model that showed a storm could last for more than 40 days and dump 10 feet of water on the state. The storm would be goaded on by an "atmospheric river" that would move water "at the same rate as 50 Mississippis discharging water into the Gulf of Mexico," according to the AP. Winds could reach 125 miles per hour, and landslides could compound the damage, the report notes.Such a superstorm is hypothetical but not improbable, climate researchers warn.
