US Secretary of State John Kerry has said that Israel risks becoming "an apartheid state" if there is no two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Al Jazeera reported.

Kerry's comments were published on Sunday by The Daily Beast news website, which obtained a recording of his remarks on Friday to the Trilateral Commission, a non-governmental organisation which includes senior officials and experts from the US, Western Europe, Russia and Japan.

"A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second class citizens - or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state," said Kerry.

"Once you put that frame in your mind, that reality, which is the bottom line, you understand how imperative it is to get to the two-state solution, which both leaders, even yesterday, said they remain deeply committed to."

The US-based The Daily Beast reported that senior US officials have rarely used the term in reference to Israel.

Jen Psaki, the spokesperson for the US State Department, said: "Secretary Kerry, like Justice Minister Livni, and previous Israeli Prime Ministers Olmert and Barak, was reiterating why there's no such thing as a one state solution if you believe, as he does, in the principle of a Jewish State."

"[Kerry] was talking about the kind of future Israel wants and the kind of future both Israelis and Palestinians would want to envision. The only way to have two nations and two peoples living side by side in peace and security is through a two state solution. And without a two state solution, the level of prosperity and security the Israeli and Palestinian people deserve isn't possible," she added.

Kerry has been conducting more than a year of intensive shuttle diplomacy trying to broker Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Earlier in April, he urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to prevent the negotiations from collapsing, saying it was regrettable that both sides have taken steps recently that are not helpful in promoting peace and ending the decades-long conflict between the two sides.

The "crime of apartheid" include "inhumane acts... committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime," according to the 1998 Rome Statute.

Apartheid was insitutionalised from 1948 to 1994 in South Africa, and was a means of racial classification and segregration.Hmmm......Perhaps they can give Hamas a special trade partner status?

After three years of stalemate, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process resumed in Washington on Monday and it remains to be seen whether this round of negotiations will yield a different result than past efforts.

On Monday evening, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry hosted Israeli and Palestinian negotiators at the State Department building in Washington for an iftar dinner -- the evening meal with which Muslims break their daily fast during Ramadan.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's special envoy Yitzhak Molcho attended on behalf of Israel while chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' aide Mohammed Shtayyeh represented the Palestinians.

After the negotiating teams arrived in Washington, Kerry met separately with each, starting with the Israelis, before all came together around the dinner table. Kerry and his delegation of four, including new U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Martin Indyk, were seated on one side of the table and their guests on the other side, with the two main negotiators Livni and Erekat seated side by side.

"It's very, very special to be here," Kerry told his guests. "There isn't very much to talk about at all," he joked.

The Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams were to hold their first work meeting on Tuesday, to be followed by a press conference.

Before arriving in Washington, Livni and Molcho visited New York, where they met with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. As part of the understandings reached ahead of the talks, the Palestinians agreed to refrain from asking the U.N. for recognition of statehood or any other unilateral steps in pursuit of statehood recognition during the course of the negotiations.

Moon expressed "strong support" for the renewal of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and also said he appreciated the "courageous decision of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in this regard."

Livni said that negotiations would be "very tough" and there would be obstacles along the way. She added, however, that negotiations were the only way to achieve a two-state solution and protect Israel's security and diplomatic interests.

In an interview with Reuters Television in Washington, Livni voiced some hope about the talks. "It is not a favor to the United States or to the Palestinians; this is something that we need to do," she said.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday welcomed the renewal of talks, saying he was hopeful "that both the Israelis and Palestinians will approach these talks in good faith and with sustained focus and determination."

"This is a promising step forward, though hard work and hard choices remain ahead," Obama said.

Obama also praised the appointment of Indyk to lead the U.S. negotiating team.

The appointment of Indyk was announced by Kerry on Monday just ahead of the renewal of talks.

"[Indyk] is realistic," Kerry said. "He understands that Israeli-Palestinian peace will not come easily and it will not happen overnight. But he also understands that there is now a path forward and we must follow that path with urgency."

Regarding the upcoming negotiations, Kerry said, "Going forward, it's no secret that this is a difficult process. If it were easy, it would have happened a long time ago. It's no secret, therefore, that many difficult choices lie ahead for the negotiators and for the leaders as we seek reasonable compromises on tough, complicated, emotional, and symbolic issues. I think reasonable compromises have to be a keystone of all of this effort. I know the negotiations are going to be tough, but I also know that the consequences of not trying could be worse."

Indyk, 62, replaces David Hale as the head of U.S. efforts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. Hale took over the role from George Mitchell in 2011.

"It is a daunting and humbling challenge, but one that I cannot desist from," Indyk said on Monday about his new role.

While Indyk expressed cautious optimism on Monday that an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal is achievable, he painted a less rosy picture a year and a half ago. In an interview with Army Radio then, he said, "I'm not particularly optimistic because I think that the heart of the matter is that the maximum concessions that this government of Israel would be prepared to make fall far short of the minimum requirements that Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] will insist on. So it may be possible to keep the talks going, which is a good thing but I find it very hard to believe that they will reach an agreement."

Abbas was in Cairo on Monday, where he laid out his vision for a final-status agreement with Israel.

Abbas said that no Israeli settlers or soldiers could remain in a future Palestinian state. He also said that Palestinians deem illegal all Israeli settlement building in the West Bank.

The forceful statements appeared to challenge Kerry's hopes that the terms of the talks, scheduled to begin Monday night over dinner, be kept secret.

"In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli -- civilian or soldier -- on our lands," Abbas said in a briefing to mostly Egyptian journalists.

"An international, multinational presence like in Sinai, Lebanon and Syria -- we are with that," he said, referring to United Nations peacekeeping operations in those places.

Israel has said in the past that it would seek to maintain a military presence in the Jordan Valley after the establishment of a Palestinian state to prevent any influx of weapons that could be used against Israel.

But Abbas said he stood by understandings he said he reached with former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Netanyahu's predecessor, that NATO forces could deploy in the Jordan Valley "as a security guarantee to us and them."

Regarding Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the status of Jerusalem -- among the most contentious issues facing the two sides -- Abbas signalled no softening of his stance.

"We've already made all the necessary concessions," he said.

"East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine ... if there were and must be some kind of small exchange (of land) equal in size and value, we are ready to discuss this -- no more, no less," he said.Hmmmm......."Final Solution" sounds like something we heard before and how that turned out for the Jewish people.Read the full story here.

EU foreign ministers, among them Britain's William Hague and Laurent Fabius of France, have said they will back EU efforts to label products from Israeli communities in Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem, according to a letter obtained by AFP on Friday.

"We warmly welcome your commitment to work with fellow commissioners to prepare EU-wide guidelines on the labelling of settlement produce," said the letter by 13 ministers, addressed to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and dated April 12.

"This is an important step to ensure correct and coherent application of EU consumer protection and labelling legislation, which is in fulfillment of our previous commitments and is fully consistent with long-standing EU policy in relation to Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories," the letter said, according to AFP.

"We stand ready to assist you in taking forward this important work," added the signatories, which also included the chief diplomats of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland and Slovenia.

Britain and Denmark have been at the forefront of calls for clear and unambiguous labelling of products from Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem, noted AFP.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said on Friday that, by concentrating on Israel, the campaign was unfair.

"This whole labelling initiative is fundamentally discriminatory as it singles out one country and one area for labelling," he told AFP. "Surely the EU feels strongly about quite a wide number of areas in controversy around the world and indeed in Europe itself."

Abu Islam: We have four large Islamic groups: The Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafis, the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, and Al-Gama’a Islamiyya. These are the four significant powers.

Is there anyone more qualified to lead the country than the Muslim Brotherhood? Then let the Muslim Brotherhood assume this responsibility.

Who should be in charge of religious affairs in Egypt? The Salafis. Is any group more qualified than the Salafis to regulate ideology? I choose the Salafis to run Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Religious Endowments.

We are left with the army and the police. Which is the best to run the police? The Muslim Brotherhood? No. The Salafis? No. Al-Gama’a Islamiyya is the best for the job. This leaves the army for the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

This is how disagreements can turn into pluralism, and I pray to Allah that this will be accepted by all, and the various powers of the Islamic nation will come together.

Egypt's foreign ministry summoned Canada's charge d'affaires in Cairo on Monday, over Foreign Minister John Baird's controversial visit to eastern Jerusalem to meet an Israeli minister last week.

According to a report in AFP, Egypt’s foreign ministry expressed its "astonishment" at Baird's visit and demanded "a clarification of the reasons for convening the meeting in the occupied capital of Palestine," it said in a statement.

Baird's meeting with Justice Minister Tzipi Livni last week could be seen as "partial recognition of Israel's illegal attempts to annex east Jerusalem and consider it part of Israel's capital," the statement added.

Baird met Livni, lead peace negotiator in Israel's cabinet, at her office in eastern Jerusalem last Tuesday. Such a move is normally avoided by visiting diplomats since world countries do not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over eastern Jerusalem, which it liberated during the 1967 Six Day War.

The Egyptian move comes one day after the Palestinian Authority summoned Canada's envoy, and Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said he was "extremely shocked" by the eastern Jerusalem meeting.

Canada is one of Israel's staunchest allies and was one of the few countries that opposed a successful PA bid for upgraded status at the United Nations late last year.
Before the vote, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper personally intervened to pressure Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to drop his bid for upgraded status at the United Nations.

Former PA foreign minister Nabil Shaath on Friday lambasted the visit, writing in the Canadian daily The Globe and Mail that the visit was an "unprecedented recognition of the illegal Israeli annexation of Palestinians' occupied capital" and a "slap in the face to the Palestinian people."

Baird himself was unfazed by the criticism, saying on Friday that where he has coffee with someone is “irrelevant” to the larger discussion of Middle East peace and does not signal a shift in Canadian foreign policy.

“I’m just not interested in getting into the semantic argument about whether you have a meeting with one person on one side of the street [and] it’s OK, and you have a meeting on the other side of street and it’s not,” he said.

Is the world in need of another Rosa Parks moment? Well, news of buses that have been designated to carry “Palestinians only” passengers in the West Bank has raised questions over whether a “blast from the past” bout of racial segregation on buses has emerged.
The Israeli transportation ministry has set up the new bus lines, insisting they are for the general public, however only making Palestinian villages aware of the service, Israel-based Ynet news reported on Saturday.
The report also noted that several bus drivers who chose to travel on the so-called “mixed lines” – used by Jews in the same areas – would be asked to leave.
The new bus lines, seemingly for Palestinians only, are intended to transport Palestinian workers from the West Bank to central Israel, the ministry said.
Although legally there is no way to stop Palestinians from boarding “regular” lines, one driver told Ynet: “We are not allowed to refuse service and we will not order anyone to get off the bus, but from what we were told, starting next week, there will be checks at the checkpoint, and Palestinians will be asked to board their own buses.” The driver was from Afikim – the company that holds the routes franchise for the area.
The new lines have also been marketed towards Palestinian workers with “flyers in Arabic urging Palestinians to arrive at Eyal crossing and use the designated lines,” Ynet reported.

The news was reminiscent of the challenge facing African Americans decades ago; racial segregation on public transport buses. In 1955, one black woman, Rosa Parks, broke the segregation laws stipulating that black Americans must vacate their seats if there are white passengers left standing. Parks became an icon for the civil rights movement.

The Israeli transportation ministry, however, argues that the lines are not for “Palestinians only,” but the introduction of the new service was to improve transportation for all.“The new lines are not separate lines for Palestinians but rather two designated lines meant to improve the services offered to Palestinian workers who enter Israel through Eyal Crossing,” the ministry said in a statement cited by the website.

“The new lines will replace irregular, pirate lines that charge very high prices from Palestinian passengers. The new lines will reduce congestion and will benefit Israelis and Palestinians alike.
“The Transportation Ministry is forbidden from preventing any passenger from boarding any line of public transportation, nor do we know of a directive to that effect. The trade minister was given the nod to issue a notice requiring that products are marked so that buyers knew their origin is not Israel, government spokesman Jimmy Manyi told a press briefing.
“This is in line with South Africa’s stance that recognizes the 1948 borders delineated by the United Nations and does not recognize occupied territories beyond these borders as being part of the state of Israel,” he said.
The plan has already met protests in South Africa and been slammed by Israel’s foreign ministry. Local Jewish leaders said Wednesday the community was outraged over what they called “discriminatory, divisive” measures. “At bottom, they are believed to be motivated not by technical trade concerns but by political bias against the state of Israel. All attempts to discuss these concerns, however, have come to nothing,” the South African Jewish Board of Deputies said in a statement. South Africa says its backing of Palestine stems from its own history of apartheid, oppression and rights abuses.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim recently expressed “concern by high profile and government institutions visits to Israel as it gives legitimacy to Israel occupation of Palestine land”. The trade ministry in May invited public comments on the labels, saying traders must put the tags on so consumers will “not be misled”. The decision has been described by the Institute for Security Studies as” very symbolic and not a surprise”.“This may be the start, and a number of other countries may follow suit,” said Jakkie Cilliers, the head of the institute. The South African decision was swiftly dismissed by the Israeli foreign ministry as “unacceptable.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said in a statement that the move constitutes “a blatant discrimination based on national and political distinction.” “What is totally unacceptable is the use of tools which, by essence, discriminate and single out, fostering a general boycott,” he added. The 16 signatories to the letter are students and alumni from historically black colleges and universities who are members of the Vanguard Leadership Group, a leadership development academy and honor society for top students. The letter ran or is slated to run in student newspapers at Brown University, University of California- Los Angeles, University of Maryland and Columbia University over the next few days.

“The Students for Justice in Palestine’s labeling of Israel, an extremely diverse and vibrant country, as an apartheid state is not only false, but offensive,” Vanguard President Michael Hayes told The Jerusalem Post. “Additionally, this rhetoric does absolutely nothing to help Israel-Palestine negotiations or relations. We feel this type of action serves to hinder the peace process domestically and abroad, and have made it our priority to take a stand to shift the tide of understanding.”In a statement released by the Vanguard Leadership Group as to why they authored the open letter to SJP, Vanguard described itself as “proudly involved in the pro-Israel movement in America.“The use of the word ‘apartheid’ by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) in its characterization of Israel is patently false and deeply offensive to all who feel a connection to the state of Israel,” the letter reads. “Your organization’s campaign against Israel is spreading misinformation about its policies, fostering bias in the media and jeopardizing prospects for a timely resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Such irresponsibility is a blemish on your efforts."The letter continues to state that “[p]laying the ‘apartheid card’ is a calculated attempt to conjure up images associated with the racist South African regimes of the 20th century,” and calls the strategy “as transparent as it is base.”“Beyond that, it is highly objectionable to those who know the truth about the Israelis’ record on human rights and how it so clearly contrasts with South Africa’s,” the letter reads, noting that under apartheid, black South Africans had no rights in a country in which they were the majority of the population.Saying that the analogy manipulates rather than informs, the letter requests SJP to “immediately stop referring to Israel as an apartheid society and to acknowledge that the Arab minority in Israel enjoys full citizenship with voting rights and representation in the government.”“Decency, justice, and the hope of peace and reconciliation in the Middle East compel us to demand an immediate cessation to the deliberate misappropriation of words and of the flagrant mischaracterizations of Israel,” the letter concludes. “Your compliance with this request will be viewed as a responsible and appropriate first step toward raising the level of discourse.”Hmmmm.......The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.

  Acting Ambassador Daniel Saada and 3 other Israeli diplomats were rescued under heavy gunfire from the capital Abidjan and will return to Israel on Sunday.An Israeli diplomat was injured while being rescued from the conflict-torn capital of the Ivory Coast over the weekend. A United Nations force, which included Jordanian soldiers with armored personnel carriers, evacuated the Israelis under heavy crossfire.Four Israeli diplomats were in the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan when the already-bloody conflict between backers of president-elect Alassane Ouattara and supporters of incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo exploded.The diplomats had been holed up in the ambassador's residence, but were evacuated for fear that soldiers would take over the residence, something that had already happened to the Japanese ambassador to the Ivory Coast.Armed United Nations soldiers and vehicles arrived to evacuate the Israeli diplomats under heavy crossfire. The four Israeli diplomats ran outside and jumped onto the armored personnel carrier as it was in motion.In their hasty escape, Acting Ambassador Daniel Saada fell from one of the vehicles and was injured. One of the UN forces' medics determined that Saada's injuries were serious, and called for the fastest possible evacuation.The UN forces then lost their way on the streets of Abidjan and were unable to return to base. Deputy Ambassador Elad Ratzon then entered the first vehicle, which was being driven by Jordanian soldiers under UN command. Ratzon explained to the soldiers in Arabic how to leave the area and directed them back to the UN base.Acting Ambassador Saada was examined by medical personnel at the UN base, and the decision was made to immediately transfer the Israeli diplomats to Abidjan airport by helicopter, in order to evacuate them as soon as possible so that Saada could receive appropriate medical care.A UN plane filled with other diplomats and foreign nationals waited for the Israeli diplomats to arrive before taking off for Accra, the capital of nearby Ghana. • Discrimination remains at forefront of Turkish society, slain journalist's wife says.Discrimination based on ethnic or religious background remains persistent in all facets of Turkish state and society, according to Rakel Dink, the widow of slain journalist Hrant Dink.“A schoolbook in Armenian has been [introduced] to the curriculum for primary schools, but [it is not enough],” Dink said Saturday at the Building Peace conference at Istanbul Bilgi University.“The Kurdish language, which I speak, is still politically banned. Being a Christian is another concern in this country, nobody knows what is said to Christians every day,” she said.“How will discriminatory and racist speeches, moves, plans and projects be collected, removed, wrapped up and thrown into the garbage can in this country?” Rakel Dink asked, adding that all pressure against people made them turn in upon themselves, thus shutting themselves off from society.Dink also said nobody intended to apologize for terming the participants in the 2005 conference as “enemies.”“They might even say ‘enemies have gathered’ for this meeting. Mubarak's sons Gamal and Alaa were also summoned in the embezzlement probe, the prosecutor said in a statement, adding that comments by Mubarak on Sunday in which he denied accusations of corruption would not affect the investigations. Mubarak said on Sunday the allegations against his family were unfounded and he had the right to defend his reputation.Egypt's public prosecutor said on Sunday also said it had sequestered land belonging to Saudi billionaire Prince AlWaleed bin Talal at Toshka in the south of the country. • EU to warn Turkey on press freedom.The European Union is expected to convey a series of warnings to Turkey during the next meeting of the EU-Turkey Association Council, which will be held in Brussels on April 19.Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu is scheduled to attend the meeting of the council, which is reportedly getting ready to draw attention to a host of issues, ranging from press freedom to energy security, mentioned in a draft document of the EU Common Implementation Strategy.On the issue of press freedom, the EU report maintained a critical stance, calling on Turkey to enact further legislation in order to better harmonize its laws with the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, while expressing concern over the recent arrests of journalists, bans on certain Internet sites and the seizure of a draft manuscript.The increasing trend of self-censorship among journalists was also mentioned as a source of concern.Regarding the Kurdish issue, the document said the EU regrets that the democratic initiative and measures announced by the government in 2009 in order to address the Kurdish problem have not met expectations. • Turkish PM's daughter walks out on play with 'undesirable elements'.Claims that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s daughter Sümeyye walked out on a theatrical performance that insulted her have caused an uproar in the capital.Sümeyye left a performance of “Youth Osman” staged Friday by the Ankara State Theaters because she was insulted by some scenes in the play, daily Radikal reported Sunday.Sources from the state theaters said the play contained some “undesirable elements” and that an investigation was being launched into the claims.The “insult” reportedly stemmed from an incident of eye contact between Sümeyye and one of the performers, who allegedly winked at the prime minister’s daughter.Sources said the play was performed in a way faithful to the original text, and that audience members did not know Sümeyye was among them. • HT:Wired.Rocket War: 36,000 DIY Missiles vs. Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’.Israel is once again under rocket attack. But the few weapons being flung at it from their enemies in the south — Hamas — could be just a preview of a much larger rocket war in the north, courtesy of Hezbollah. Israel’s response to the missile threat: a next-gen rocket-blaster and a covert program of sabotage and assassination.WikiLeaks shared some of its classified State Department cables with the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. In the cables published today, Israeli intelligence officials tell their American diplomats they expect Hezbollah will launch between 24,000 to 36,000 rockets against it for over two months. That would be a big step up from the 2006 war which lasted 34 days and saw 4,000 rockets hit Israel. Israeli officials quoted in the cables also said that they expect the rocket fire to reach farther into Israel, saying that the terrorist group will target Tel Aviv, which wasn’t hit during the last round of fighting.To mitigate some of Hezbollah’s missile threat, Israel is expected to deploy its Iron Dome anti-rocket missiles on its northern border with Lebanon alongside its Arrow long range ballistic missile defense system. In the meantime, Israel has rushed Iron Dome to the southern border with Gaza last month to meet Hamas’ rocket fire. Since then, it has scored its first successes, taking out two rockets yesterday and three today headed towards the southern city of Ashkelon. But Iron Dome’s protection comes at a price. The advanced radar-guided system uses missiles to knock out cheap, sometimes DIY rockets at short range — and costs at least $25,000 per missile fired and $50 million per battery. Facing an arsenal of thousands of Hezbollah rockets up north, Iron Dome could quickly rack up a hefty bill in the event of another war.Israel is also turning to covert operations to disrupt Hamas’s supply of rockets. The Washington Times‘ Eli Lake reported late yesterday that an attack on a Hamas arms convoy in Sudan this week, the assassination of a Hamas official in Dubai in 2010 and the kidnapping of a Palestinian engineer in Europe, said to have designed rockets for Hamas, were all part of a covert Israeli policy of “intelligence-based prevention” against Hamas. During the last Gaza war, Israel struggled between its desire to project a ferocious deterrent image and still be seen as being responsible in its targeting practices. The aim of the new covert policy, Lake reports, is to avoid some of the condemnation Israel faced for the deaths of civilians during the Gaza war by narrowing its focus on select Hamas figures abroad.Read the full story here.

My concern about this issue is always acute in the fall when schools re-open after summer recess and now in the spring when warm temperatures exponentially increase outdoor school activities. Recent events I am about to bring to your attention serve to heighten my concerns at this time. Baray of the Murrieta (California) Police Department.

Just over four years ago I wrote a follow-up warning regarding Islamic terrorists and school buses which was part of a chain of warnings that began on this website in 2004 and continued through to 2008 and the Northeast Intelligence Network published “Chilling Arabic Communication: “When School Bus Turns to Hell Bus.” These Beslan in America type warnings are repeatedly read and then forgotten until something along the lines of what occurred just days ago in Israel when a just emptied school bus was hit by an anti-tank rocket. Had this attack occurred moments earlier it would have been a “hell bus;” a “Beslan” on wheels in other words. Incidentally, please say a prayer for 16-year old Daniel Aryeh ben Tamar who remains in critical condition as a result of this terrorist attack on a school bus.

Over shadowed by this attack and the ongoing low intensity warfare between the HAMAS terrorists and Israel was another Islamic-inspired massacre of innocents inside a school that saw nearly a dozen children shot to death in cold blood and the wounding of 15 others between the ages of 9 and 14-years old . The school was not in Israel, but in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Islamic Jihad-inspired assailant was a 24-year old former student at the Tasso de Silveira School who gained admittance to the school by posing as someone who intended to give a motivational talk to the students. Instead of a motivational talk the terrorist pulled two hand guns and promptly began his slaughter.

Closer to home, we have the New York State Education Department declaring as non-credible an anarchists email which made “specific threats of violence to New York state office buildings, the state Legislature and school buses.” Anarchists like this obvious nutcase are no different than vermin like Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols who worked hand-in-hand with Middle Eastern terrorists to execute their assaults upon ourselves and our children. And justifiably so: it’s simultaneously alarmist and insipid, telling you nothing useful about what to do when the alert goes from Salmon to Fuchsia. But even though the Department of Homeland Security is junking the terror coloring book, don’t expect its newest plan to relieve your terror anxiety.That’s because the new terror alerts — more targeted and more informative — are coming directly to your social network of choice. A plan for the new system recommends sharing threat information over Twitter and Facebook. That way, explains the Associated Press, which reviewed the undisclosed plan, “an ‘imminent’ alert would warn about a credible, specific and impending terrorist threat or an on-going attack against the U.S.” All to your mobile! Lucky you!DHS has reserved the Twitter account @NTASAlerts (for National Threat Advisory System). It hasn’t tweeted anything yet, but it’s got 1,966 followers as of this writing.Not all its alerts will be particularly specific. Some would simply warn people to be on alert for unattended baggage or other items that everyone already knows to watch out for, thanks to the “see something, say something” campaigns. • HT:TheStrategyPage.The New Chinese Missile Looks Very Familiar.April 10, 2011: China recently introduced, for the export market, the M20 ballistic missile. This is a system where two of these 3-4 ton missiles are carried on a large truck transporter/launcher. What is worrisome to Russia is that the M20 looks very similar to the Russian Iskander (9K720) system. Increasingly, Russia has accused China of stealing a great deal of Russian military technology, and warned of repercussions if China tried to sell these copies to the export market. China has had plenty of time to steal Iskander's secrets. So far, China has not revealed details of the M20s operation sufficiently to make detailed comparisons with Iskander. But if the M20 contains too many of the Iskander special features, there could be, if not war, then litigation. Russia originally planned to build at least five brigades of Iskander (60 launchers, each with two missiles, plus reloads, which could amount to over a 150 missiles). Iskander was just entering commercial production three years ago, and only three brigades are believed in service. One was deployed near St Petersburg, much to the consternation of nearby Estonia.Russian missile production capabilities have sharply deteriorated since the end of the Cold War in 1991. This is one reason why the current Russian government is making so much noise about this imaginary NATO plot to surround and subdue Russia. Losing the Cold War did not go down well in Russia. Rather than forget and move on, many Russians prefer to remember, and use the imagined evil intentions of their Cold War foes to explain away defects in the Russian character.This threatened Russian deployment to Kaliningrad was all about a unique feature of Iskander, which is that it is not a traditional ballistic missile. That is, it does not fire straight up, leave the atmosphere, then come back down, following a ballistic trajectory. Instead, Iskander stays in the atmosphere and follows a rather flat trajectory. It is capable of evasive maneuvers and deploying decoys. This makes it more difficult for anti-missile systems to take it down. Russia is buying a special version (Iskanders-M) for its own military. This version has a longer range (400 kilometers) and more countermeasures (to interception). Russia will not provide details. Russia has admitted that it could use Iskander to destroy the U.S. anti-missile systems in a pre-emptive attack. Just in case Russia wanted to start World War III for some reason or another. This threatened Iskander deployment was mainly a publicity stunt, unless you want to seriously consider the possibility that the Russians are trying to start a nuclear war.The small (200 square kilometers, 400,000 Russians, the Germans were expelled 60 years ago) city is still the headquarters of the Russian Baltic fleet and protected by a large force of troops and warplanes.
