Saudi Prince Turki Al-Faisal Lashes out to Obama: 'We Are Not Free Riders'. (MEMRI).

On March 14, 2016 the English-language Saudi daily Arab News published an article by Prince Turki Al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief and former ambassador to the U.S., titled "Mr. Obama, We Are Not 'Free Riders.'"

The article responds to statements made by U.S. President Barack Obama in a series of interviews with The Atlantic published on March 10, 2016. In the interviews, conducted Jeffrey Goldberg, Obama said that "free riders aggravate" him, referring to some of the U.S.'s allies in both Europe and the Arab world who, he said, expect America to lead the fight against terrorism (and action on other fronts) while refusing to take up the burden themselves. Obama also said that the Saudis must "share" the Middle East with their Iranian foes, adding that the rivalry between these two countries has "helped to feed proxy wars and chaos in Syria and Iraq and Yemen."[1]

Answering these statements in his article, Turki Al-Faisal says that Saudi Arabia plays a pivotal role in combating terror and extremism in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere. He also states that Saudi Arabia helps America's economy by buying U.S. treasury bonds, by sending Saudis to study at American universities, and by employing Americans in its businesses and industries.

Wondering at Obama's harsh criticism of Saudi Arabia, the prince asks whether Obama is "petulant" because Saudi Arabia supported the Egyptian people in their uprising against the Muslim Brotherhood government, "which [Obama] supported." 

Alternatively, he says, perhaps Obama has inclined so far towards Iran that he equates "the [Saudi] Kingdom's 80 years of constant friendship" towards America with the behavior of Iran, which continues to sponsor terrorism across the Middle East and to regard the U.S. as its greatest enemy.

Recently the Russian strategic missile forces’ commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said Russia’s new missiles will have the capability to neutralize any future U.S. missile defense system.

For now, Karakayev is right—not because the missiles are invincible, but because the Obama administration is deliberately limiting the United States’ ballistic missile defense program. This must change.

Our current administration decided to pursue a European Phased Adaptive Approach, a modified missile defense plan emphasizing medium-range ballistic missile threat, instead of putting a radar and two-stage ground-based interceptors in Europe.

The Obama administration was to augment protection of the U.S. homeland in the 2020 timeframe. But the Obama administration decided to cancel that aspect of the plan and focus on short- and medium-range missile defense protection for the European allies (Russia happened to object to this part of the plan most).

The United States therefore is deliberately pursuing a missile defense program to be able to intercept only a handful of incoming ballistic missiles of first, not as technologically advanced, generations.

Given the spread of ballistic missiles—their increasing sophistication, range, and lethality—it is time to put U.S. missile defense policy on a sound track.

Additionally, in light of Russia’s aggressive behavior and a desire to use its nuclear and ballistic missile leverage to blackmail the U.S. and its allies, the United States should plan for a comprehensive-layered ballistic missile defense system capable of shooting down all ballistic missiles.

To do so, the United States will have to pursue a space-based ballistic missile defense layer as well as continue to work on future technologies—for example, directed energy. Hmmmmm........'Flexibility'.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have so many missiles they don't know where to hide them, a senior commander said at Friday prayers, after the United States threatened to impose fresh sanctions.

"We lack enough space in our stockpiles to house our missiles," said General Hossein Salami, the Guards' deputy, as a row with the U.S. over Iran's ballistic missile programme deepened.

"Hundreds of long tunnels are full of missiles ready to fly to protect your integrity, independence and freedom," he told worshippers in Tehran, promising to never "stop developing our defence deterrent".

Iranian state television aired in October unprecedented footage of such an underground missile base.

The general's comments came after reports that the U.S. had planned – but later shelved – to unveil a fresh round of sanctions following two recent missile tests by the Islamic republic. Read the full story here.

It is hoped that with your support, the range of Iran’s missiles surpasses 5,000 kilometers in near future, said Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei in an open letter to President Hassan Rouhani.

The former IRGC commander thanked Rouhani for his swift follow-up order to reports of US sanctions resumption where he obliged the Defense Ministry to heat up Iran’s missile program, Rezaei’s official website wrote January 1.

Missiles with a 5,000-kilometer range would be able to threaten the US air base in Diego Garcia which was used for Operation Eagle Claw, the former commander stated.

Diego Garcia, a small, strategically located, isolated island in the Indian Ocean is home to Camp Justice, a United States military base.

Two days earlier, reports said the US Treasury Department was preparing sanctions against a number of Iranian and other international companies and individuals for their alleged role in developing Iran's ballistic missile program.

The reports were met with harsh reaction by Iran as President Hassan Rouhani in an official decree on December 31 ordered Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan to brace the missile program.

The interventionist nature of the US has proven that at such times the only thing that can defend Iran’s national interests is a hard smack, Rezaei stressed.


“The US will regret its behavior and realize that such actions cause no benefit,” he stressed. Hmmm.....high crimes and misdemeanors.

Iran has already received yellow cake from Russia, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Dec. 15.

Araqchi said that the Islamic Republic has received a specific amount of yellow cake that was expected to be handed over to Iran in exchange for the country’s enriched uranium after the adoption of a resolution on Iran’s nuclear program by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

According to Araqchi, Iran is now expected to send off its enriched uranium to Russia after the adoption of a resolution on the country’s PMD (possible military dimensions to Tehran’s nuclear program) file by the IAEA Board of Governors, the Fars news agency reported Dec. 15.

Earlier on Dec. 14, Araqchi said Iran would sell its enriched uranium to Russia and would receive 140 tons of uranium ore in exchange for 10 tons of its enriched uranium after the adoption of the resolution.

Under the nuclear deal, the sanctions against Tehran will be lifted in exchange for scaling down Iran’s nuclear activities.

On October 26, 2015, Hashemi Rafsanjani, the head of Iran's Expediency Council and the political rival of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, gave a comprehensive interview to the website "Iranians' Nuclear Hope."[1] 

In the interview, he says that, during the Iran-Iraq war, Iran kept the nuclear option in case it felt threatened or required this option, but chose not to act in this direction.

Rafsanjani also personally comes out against Khamenei's directives regarding the JCPOA by calling on Rohani's government to meet Iran's obligations under this agreement from July 14, 2015. This is in direct defiance of Khamenei, who on October 21, 2015 ordered Rohani's government to delay meeting these obligations until nine new conditions he has added to the JCPOA have been met.[2]

Rafsanjani stresses in the interview that the majority of the Iranian people, some 80-90 percent, support the JPCOA as it was presented in July, thus creating a potential for fermenting a civil uprising against Khamenei.

Furthermore, Rafsanjani admits that both he and Khamenei were personally in charge of the development of Iran's secret nuclear program: he during his term as the Majlis speaker and later as president, and Khamenei during his presidency and later during his service as Supreme Leader.

In fact, Rafsanjani reveals that, during his presidency, he sought to develop the Arak heavy water facility, in the plutonium track, and invested resources in it, though at another point in the interview he rebuts domestic criticism by explaining that Iran's concessions regarding the Arak facility do not harm Iran's national interest since the main use of the plutonium track is "for military purposes."

By these statements Rafsanjani confirms suspicions that Iran tried to establish a military nuclear project.

By the very act of calling to meet Iran's commitments under the JCPOA and thereby gain international legitimacy for Iran's peaceful nuclear program, Rafsanjani exposes Khamenei as one who insists on the military nuclear option and challenges him to relinquish this option so as to let Iran take its rightful place in the international arena.

Redesigning the Arak nuclear reactor will not be a single project and will be implemented in three phases, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

“The project will be carried out under the management of Iran. In other words, all others will somehow work with us,” Iran ’s IRNA news agency quoted Zarif as saying Oct. 27.

“In the first phase, the joint statement between Salehi, the US energy minister and the Chinese counterpart was issued,” Zarif said.

“In the second phase, the official document will be signed by ministers or other high-ranking officials of Iran and the P5+1 group. And the third phase will be about details of each project related to the Arak reactor,” Zarif explained.

The redesigning process will be in accordance with the Supreme Leader’s guidelines, decisions of the Supreme National Security Council and the parliament’s approval, he noted.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) spokesman Behrooz Kamalvandi said Oct. 26 that finalizing a document on the Arak nuclear reactor is the first and foremost step in Iran’s nuclear agreement.

As Palestinians assailants continue to murder Jews across Israel, the Obama administration on Wednesday accused the Jewish state of committing acts of “terrorism,” drawing outrage from many observers.

As the number of Israelis murdered during a streak of Palestinian terrorism continues to rise, the Obama administration sought to equate the sides and told reporters that, in its view, Israel is guilty of terrorism.

“Individuals on both sides of this divide are—have proven capable of, and in our view, are guilty of acts of terrorism,” State Department Spokesman John Kirby told reporters following questions about the spike in violence.

Kirby also said the administration has obtained “credible reports” of Israelis using excessive force as it deals with a rash of terrorist murders carried out by Palestinians seeking to cause havoc and spark an intifada.

“We’re always concerned about credible reports of excessive use of force against civilians, and we routinely raise our concerns about that.”

At least three Israelis have been killed and another 20 wounded as a result of attacks by Palestinian terrorists in recent days.

The violence has prompted pushback from the Obama administration, much of it aimed at Israeli itself.

Secretary of State John Kerry, for instance, said he sympathized with Palestinian “frustration” in a statement that accused Israel of boosting the construction of so-called “settlements,” or Jewish homes in historically Jewish areas of the country.

The administration appears to be following up on Abbas' own lies, like his claim that Israel "murdered" a juvenile terrorist. But contrary to what Abbas has been blood-libeling, the creepy little offender is very much alive, and will be prosecuted for his crime.

What's truly mind-boggling here is that at the same time they're using this gross language, the State Department's been promoting a Muslim cleric who called for murdering US soldiers. And all they care about is whatever Israel does? Truly disgusting. Hmm....Some of my Jewish followers know that years ago i warned they would try to accuse Israel of terrorism, just to isolate the Jewish state.

Politico reports that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid asked the White House to make commitment after Netanyahu won re-election in March and after Iran nuclear deal reached in July.

Politico said its report was confirmed by White House officials and Senate aides.

According to the US news outlet, Reid's requests came as he was trying to line up Democratic support for the Iran nuclear agreement reached on July 14 and "give nervous Democrats cover to back the deal."

But this was not the first time that Reid approached the White House requesting that it back Israel at the UN and failed to receive his sought after response.

In March, the Obama administration indicated that it was reconsidering its historically staunch support of Israel at the United Nations and had not automatically accepted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement to the American media affirming his support of two states for two peoples after pre-election comments that appeared to reject it.

At this time, Reid first approached McDonough and asked that the president reverse his position.

McDonough said the White House “would look into it,” but took no action, a source close to the issue told Politico.

Reid’s office declined to comment on the report.

According to Politico, Obama administration officials said that the president's decision not to go public with the administration’s position "isn’t meant to exert leverage over Netanyahu, as something to trade to get him back to the negotiating table with the Palestinians."

The officials also said that the administration is "not holding out on a presidential declaration to preserve a future olive branch to improve a relationship between Washington and Jerusalem." Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner claimed during the U.N. General Assembly on Monday that a former Obama administration official attempted to convince Argentina to “provide the Islamic Republic of Iran with nuclear fuel.” 

The claim was seemingly overshadowed by President Barack Obama’s high-stakes dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The official at the center of Kirchner’s claims confirmed his trip to Argentina in a statement to TheBlaze, but also provided vital context behind his objective and a proposed fuel swap deal that he said ultimately fell apart.

In 2010 we were visited in Argentina by Gary Samore, at that time the White House’s top advisor in nuclear issues. He came to see us in Argentina with a mission, with an objective: under the control of IAEA, the international organization in the field of weapons control and nuclear regulation, Argentina had supplied in the year 1987, during the first democratic government, the nuclear fuel for the reactor known as “Teheran”. Gary Samore had explained to our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Héctor Timerman, that negotiations were underway for the Islamic Republic of Iran to cease with its uranium enrichment activities or to do it to a lesser extent but Iran claimed that it needed to enrich this Teheran nuclear reactor and this was hindering negotiations. They came to ask us, Argentines, to provide the Islamic Republic of Iran with nuclear fuel. Rohani was not in office yet. It was Ahmadinejad’s administration and negotiations had already started.

The allegations come at a time when the Obama administration is still under heavy scrutiny over its nuclear deal with Iran, which critics say puts the national security of the U.S. and Israel at risk.

For the first time since taking office in 2009, US President Barack Obama failed to mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his annual address to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Last year, as he stood at the same podium, Obama assured the international community that as “bleak as the landscape” appeared to be in the Middle East, America would “never give up the pursuit of peace” between Israelis and Palestinians.

But on Monday, during his 43 minute speech to the UNGA, the president was suddenly silent on the matter, awakening Israeli fears that his attention will be elsewhere in the last year-and-a-half of his presidency.

When reports emerged earlier this month that prominent Iranian Internet entrepreneur Arash Zad had been arrested in August at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport, it was unknown who apprehended him, or why.

But suspicion has since fallen on the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) intelligence arm, whose increased activities could indicate that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejuvenated the much-feared unit so he can gain greater control over the country.

The unit's resurgence appears to coincide with Hassan Rohani's ascension to the presidency in the summer of 2013, after which the relative moderate set about trying to live up to his campaign promises to give Iranians more freedoms and move away from his predecessor's heavy handed approach to dissent.

That, observers say, potentially puts Rohani at odds with Khamenei, who as supreme leader has ultimate say in the Islamic republic. The IRGC's intelligence unit, which falls under the supreme leader's direct authority, could serve as a useful tool if Khamenei cannot fully trust the Intelligence Ministry to do as he wishes.

"The intelligence branch of the IRGC must monitor all issues at all times and identify threats," Khamenei told IRGC commanders on September 16, according to a text of his speech posted on Khamenei.ir.

Afshari, who was arrested and tortured by the IRGC's intelligence unit under President Khatami, is not surprised to see its revival as a parallel intelligence body.

"Under Rohani the Intelligence Ministry has been trying to distance itself from methods used under [former hard-line President Mahmud] Ahmadinejad," Afshari notes.

"Khamenei is very clearly stressing the need for increased activities by IRGC's intelligence unit. I think [it means] that the unit will have a freer hand," said Ramezanpour. Hmmmm.....Rouhani served his purpose, now the leader himself will take charge again.Read the full story here.

The Iranian Armed Forces publicly displayed 12 long-range ballistic missiles for the first time after Tehran and the world powers reached a nuclear agreement and the UN Security Council issued a non-binding resolution which calls for restrictions on Iran's missile program.

The nationwide parades by various units of the Islamic Republic Army, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Law Enforcement Police and Basij (volunteer) forces were staged in Tehran and other cities across the country on Tuesday morning.

The parades mark the start of the Sacred Defense Week, commemorating Iranians' sacrifices during the 8 years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in 1980s.

Different units of Iran's military forces marched in uniform before top Army and IRGC commanders and President Hassan Rouhani in a show of military might and defensive power.

Also the latest military and defense achievements made by Iranian experts were put on display at the parades.

During the parades, the Iranian Armed Forces displayed 12 long-range ballistic missiles, including 4 Qadr F missiles with a range of 1,950km, Qadr H missiles with a range of 1,650km and 4 Sejjil missiles with a range of 2,000km.

Also, 4 Khalij-e Fars anti-ship ballistic missiles and 4 Hormoz anti-ship and radar-evading missiles with a range of 300km were among other missiles displayed in today's parades.

The public display of Iran's long-range ballistic missiles is seen as a defiance of the western states' demand and resolution 2231 which calls for restrictions on Iran's missile program.

The resolution was issued after Iran and the world powers reached a nuclear agreement on July 14.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan underlined in August that the country's defensive and missile capabilities would growingly increase regardless of any foreign pressures and resolutions.

"No element can weaken our resolve in the defensive field," Dehqan said in an interview with state TV.

"We will design and produce any missiles that we want proportionate to threats and we will conduct drills and tests in due time," he added.

Dehqan stressed that Iran would further boost the range of its missiles appropriate to possible threats.

He referred to the UN Security Council 2231 resolution, and said Tehran didn’t and would not have any plans to manufacture missiles with the capability of carrying nuclear weapons but it will bolster its defensive capabilities similar to the past.

Iran successfully tested second generation of Sejjil missiles and brought it into mass production in 2013.

Sejjil missiles are considered as the third generation of Iran-made long-range missiles.

Also, Iran's 2000km-range, liquid-fuel, Qadr F ballistic missile can reach territories as far as Israel.

Iran's surface-to-surface Sejjil missile, the long-range Shahab-3 ballistic missile which has a range of up to 2,000 km, and Zelzal and Fateh missiles have all been developed by the Aerospace Organization of the Defense Industries.

This is while the solid-fuel, two-stage Sejjil missile with two engines, is capable of reaching a very high altitude and therefore has a longer range than that of the Shahab 3 model. Hmmmm.....Sure looks like a 'peaceful and moderate' bunch to me.

Director General for Political and International Affairs at Iran 's Foreign Ministry Hamid Baidinejad said that IAEA chief Yukiya Amano’s recent visit of the Parchin military site has annulled accusations that Iran is pushing a nuclear weapon program.

The arrangement of Amano’s ceremonial and public visit of the site proved once again that political and security organizations of the Islamic Republic can carry out painstaking sets of actions to lay waste the claims that are made against the country, he said, ISNA news agency reported Sept. 21.

Parchin military base, located near the capital city of Tehran, is where the UN body suspects Iran has conducted nuclear-related tests more than a decade ago. But Iran has repeatedly denied any nuclear activity at Parchin, noting that 'road construction' activities have been done at the site.

“Our country thus managed to take a great step on the path to the implementation of the roadmap with the IAEA and end the case of Western countries’ accusations,” Baidinejad said.

Iranian experts took environmental samples from the Parchin military base without presence of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors, Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran (AEOI) said.

The sampling carried out last week within the framework of the Iran-IAEA cooperation, Kamalvandi said, Iran ’s IRNA news agency reported Sept. 21.


He further said that the Iranian experts took samples from certain points in Parchin in compliance with the relevant regulations and standards. Iran has handed over the samples to the IAEA experts, he added.

It was earlier reported that inspectors from IAEA would observe samples being taken.

On the issue of the IAEA's failure in supplying 20-percent enriched uranium for Tehran's research reactor in the past which led to Iran's own efforts and success in producing the 20-percent uranium, he (Amano) blamed the member states for disagreement on providing Iran with the supply, and said the problem was not created by the IAEA.

A senior Iranian member of Parliament Alireza Zakani said Sunday that the International Atomic Energy Agency has deprived Iran of the least services envisaged by Charter of the UN nuclear agency, Irna reported.

The IAEA is duty-bound to render services to those member countries that have accepted the Safeguards Agreement, but Iran has been deprived of the least services by the UN nuclear agency, Zakani said, citing Iranian patients' difficulties for receiving radioisotopes for their treatment.

'In 2005, when Iranian patients desperately needed radioisotopes, Belgium stopped providing radioisotopes to Iran. As a nuclear medicine specialist, I know that 130 nuclear centers of the country were shut down for a long time.'

Zakani complained that the IAEA has not carried out its inherent duties so far. 'Once Tehran research reactor ran out of fuel, 20 percent enriched uranium -- and the medical services to the cancer patients were paralyzed, the agency refused to supply fuel to Iran and Iran had no way but to provide fuel by its own which led to international sanctions and heavy damages on national economy,' Zakani said. The head of the UN nuclear agency has visited a disputed Iranian military site as part of the agency’s investigation into whether Iran carried out work related to developing a nuclear weapon.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said that Yukiya Amano traveled to the site, called Parchin, on September 20.

Parchin has been at the center of a debate over the access that agency will have in policing the nuclear deal reached between Iran and six world powers two months ago.

The scope of Amano’s visit to Parchin wasn’t immediately clear. Iranian state media described it as ceremonial rather than an inspection of the sprawling site.

Western intelligence agencies have said Parchin might be the site of a potential chemical, explosives, and munitions production since the 1990s. Western diplomats have said nuclear arms-related research may have occurred there later.

Tehran has denied conducting research related to nuclear weapons at Parchin or anywhere else in the country, saying its efforts are aimed at electricity generation, medical research, and other civilian uses.

Earlier on September 20, Amano met senior Iranian officials in Tehran, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

During his visit, Amano is expected to push for long-delayed interviews with Iranian scientists linked to alleged experiments as well as discuss Parchin.

The IAEA had said it had sent Iran questions over "ambiguities" in its submissions relating to the assessment of its past activities.

IAEA access to Parchin was one of the most sensitive issues during negotiations that led to the July 14 deal between Iran and world powers, which provides for restrictions on Iranian nuclear activities in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.

Under that deal, sanctions will not be lifted until Iran resolves outstanding IAEA questions about past research that Western powers suspect was related to weapons development.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has had extensive relations with the IAEA in the past 12 years and has always tried to keep these ties good, regular and legal," Rouhani said during the meeting in Tehran.

"We hope that by acting upon its responsibilities, the IAEA would move more in the next few months to help the scientific progress of countries, including Iran," he added.

Rouhani referred to the nuclear agreement clinched between Tehran and the world powers in Vienna on July 14, and said, "While implementing the JCPOA, we will implement the Additional Protocol voluntarily and we hope that you will also fairly supervise the implementation of the JCPOA."

Stressing Iran's close cooperation with the IAEA, he said, "Fortunately, the truth about Iran's peaceful nuclear activities in the past few years has been proved by the IAEA supervisions and snap inspections and it has been emphasized that Iran has never had any diversion in its peaceful program."
