As President Obama scrambles to release captives from the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba his own intelligence advisers reveal that a growing number of inmates freed from the compound reengage in terrorism. This is nothing new and in fact, has been documented over the years in various government assessments but this latest information comes in the midst of a frenzy to clear out the maximum security facility in order to realize the president’s longtime dream of closing it.

A new report released this month by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) shows that of the 161 Gitmo detainees released by the Obama administration, nine are confirmed to be “directly involved in terrorist or insurgent activities.”

The ODNI, the broad agency that serve as an umbrella for the intelligence community and advises the president, also writes that 113 of the 532 Gitmo captives released during the George W. Bush administration have engaged in terrorist activities.

This demonstrates that recidivism among this demographic is hardly earth-shattering news yet the administration keeps releasing more and more captives from the facility at the U.S. Naval base in southeast Cuba.


The ODNI further reveals that at least two prisoners released from Gitmo by Obama and two others released by Bush have returned to “terrorist activities” during the first half of this year alone. Read the full story here.

While President Obama continues releasing terrorists from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo a new intelligence report discloses that dozens have reengaged in terrorism after leaving the compound at the Naval base in southeast Cuba. Of the 144 Gitmo prisoners freed by the Obama administration seven are confirmed to have returned to the fight, according to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Of the 532 captives released under the George W. Bush administration, 111 eventually reengaged in extremist causes, the ODNI reveals.

Two former inmates at the US prison in Guantánamo Bay have been arrested in Belgium on charges of belonging to a group suspected of recruiting jihadists for Syria.

The pair were arrested early on Thursday in connection with a burglary at an apartment near the northern Belgian port city of Antwerp, a spokesman for the prosecutor, Jean Pascal Thoreau, told AFP.

He said the police acted after monitoring the activities of Moussa Zemmouri, a 37-year-old Belgian of Moroccan origin, and an Algerian identified as Soufiane A, both of whom had been imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Moussa Zemmouri, 37, a Moroccan national born in Antwerp, was held in Guantanamo from 2001 until 2005 after he was arrested in Pakistan, fleeing from an al Qaeda training camp in Khost, Afghanistan during the initial U.S. bombing campaign at the onset of OEF.

He was said to have been a high-ranking member of the Theological Commission of the Moroccan Islamic Fighting Group (MIFG).Also he is the author of the book “Innocent In Guantanamo,”

The pair were charged with “participating in the activities of a terrorist group,” which in turn is suspected of recruiting fighters for Syria, he added.

They were also charged along with three other men with committing a burglary at night with a weapon and a vehicle, Thoreau said.

Zemmouri, who was the only one of the five not arrested at the scene, was locked up in Guantánamo from 2001 to 2005 on suspicion of belonging to the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM), blamed for attacks in Casablanca and Madrid.

Fewer details were given for Soufiane A, whose last name was not released, but Thoreau said he is suspected of having travelled to Syria.

The White House said on Wednesday it is in the “final stages” of drafting a plan to close the contentious Guantánamo Bay prison and will submit it for review by lawmakers. A new report predicts a number of detainees held at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prison will return to terrorism if they are transferred.

The report could hurt President Obama's hopes of closing Guantanamo by the end of his presidency, which would fulfill a campaign pledge.

The report said transfers to countries with ongoing conflicts and internal instability as well as active recruitment by insurgent and terrorist organizations "pose particular problems."

"Based on trends identified during the past eleven years, we assess that some detainees currently at GTMO will seek to reengage in terrorist or insurgent activities after they are transferred," the bi-annual report released Wednesday by the Director of National Intelligence concludes.

The report said that while there are some ways to deter and delay reengagement, some detainees "who are determined to reengage will do so regardless of any transfer conditions."

The rate of those confirmed to have "reengaged" in terrorist activities after their release has increased slightly. Twelve more former detainees are confirmed to have returned to the fight in the last year, according to the report.

Overall, the number of those confirmed and suspected of reengaging in terrorism has dropped to 28.6 percent from 29 percent.

There are 122 detainees left at the facility, after Obama begun a major push late last year to transfer more detainees from the facility. Read the full story here.

After setting the historical shrines of Logar province of Afghanistan on fire on Saturday February 21st, 2015, the ISIL militants also killed one civilian and replaced the Taliban’s white flag with their own black flag in the Charkh district. 

On the same day, the ISIL men entered locals’ houses, broke their televisions and warn people not to watching television anymore (Tolonews).

The ISIL affiliated group claimed the responsibility and asked Talibans militants in the Province to declare their allegiance to Al-Baghdadi, the Caliph of Islamic States of Iraq and the Levant.

On Tuesday February 24th, 2015, another 30 men, all from Hazara ethnic minorities, were kidnapped in Zabul province by a group of masked men but no one yet claimed responsibility for it.

Although such incidents were normally claimed by the Taliban as they are the only powerful insurgent group in Logar and Zabul provinces; however, the recent burning of shrines were taken by ISIL group who receives commands directly from their own commander Sa’aad ul Emarati or Hafez Saeed Khan, nominated Governor of Khorosaan.

Since ISIL made significant contribution in international Jihad against the West, Al-Baghdadi claims that the ISIL have gained more achievements in 2014 and 2015 compared to the whole Taliban campaigns in the last fourteen years. Being attracted by even radical group, The Taliban are continuously losing their men to ISIL. In contrast, the ISIL is rapidly maximizing its man power, ammunitions and financial resources.

For example, since the announcement of the Khorosaan Province, covering modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, and part of neighboring central Asian countries, in January 2015, the ISIL had not only convinced commanders of Pakistani Taliban to declare their allegiance to Al-Baghdadi, the Group had also nominated the Pakistani Taliban commander Hafez Saeed Khan as the emir of the Khorosaan.

Other well-known Taliban figures who had recently joint ISIL are Shahidullah Shahid, Sa’aad al Emarati, Sheikh Muhsin, Dolat Khan, Khalid Mansoor, Abdul Rauf Khadim and dozens/hundreds others.

The Allegiance of Hafez Saeed Khan and other Taliban commanders to Al-Baghdadi mean that the Pakistani Taliban is no longer under the command of Mullah Omar and Al-Baghdadi’s calling of Mullah Omar a “fool and illiterate warlord” was even disgraced Mullah Omar’s religious credibility and political weight.

The Afghan Security official claims that they are competent enough to control the situation. The Afghan National Directorate of Security considers the killing of ISIL’s commander Abdul Rauf Khadim and his eight men on February 10th in Helmand as a victory. However, the recent Logar incident which happened in 60km from Kabul reveals that the ISIL is capable of threatening Afghan people anywhere in the country.

Today, the Taliban is much fragmented in the rise of even more radical groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Pakistani Taliban, known as the Tahrik e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), is no longer under the central command of Quetta Shura led by Mullah Mohammad Omar.

The ISIL, which is rapidly increasing its members, is now considered main rival to the Taliban and receives command from the Governor of Khorosaan or directly from Al-Baghdadi. Other insurgent groups such as the Haqqani group, Al-Qaida, Hezb e Islami Hekmatyar, Islamic Party of Uzbekistan and others insurgents groups are all receiving commands from their own leaders.

Amongst the various terrorists groups, the ISIL is not only much radical and well funded, the group had also proved capable of convincing loyal Taliban members such as TTP commander Hafeez Saeed Khan, TTP spokesperson Sheikh Maqbool (Shahidullah Shahid), founder of the radical Abtalul Islam Foundation Sheikh Abu Yazid Khorasani and dozens other Taliban and insurgent groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan to join them. In the latest of many fringe benefits extended to the world’s most dangerous terrorists the Obama administration is allowing Guantanamo Bay prisoners—including a senior Al Qaeda operative—to speak with family via video chats similar to Skype.

The captives are “high-value” detainees locked up in a special top-security wing of the military compound at the U.S. Naval base in southeast Cuba. Two of the terrorists recently had video conferences with family for the first time since their incarceration, according to a Spanish news agency that identifies them as Abu Faraj al Libi and Abd al Rahim al Nashiri.

Al Libi was the former No. 3 Al Qaeda leader, captured in 2005. His Department of Defense file says he’s a high risk prisoner of high intelligence value who served as the operational chief of Al Qaeda and had long term associations with Osama bin Laden.

Al Nashiri, also an Al Qaeda operative, is charged with orchestrating the deadly bombing of the Navy destroyer USS Cole in 2000. Al Nashiri’s DOD file describes him as one of Al Qaeda’s most skilled, capable and prolific operational coordinators.

The two high-profile captives and their fellow terrorists will be allowed to have regular video chats with family, according to a Pentagon spokesman cited in the article. “We have concluded that increasing family contact for the High Value Detainees can be done in a manner that is consistent with both humanitarian and security interests,” said the spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Myles Caggins III.

The Lieutenant Colonel pretty much confirmed that these types of perks will be commonplace for the terrorists at Gitmo. “We continually seek to go beyond a minimalist approach to humane treatment, and we endeavor to enhance conditions, consistent with security concerns,” Caggins added.

Since Obama moved into the White House privileges have vastly expanded for the terrorists incarcerated at Gitmo.

In 2009 Judicial Watch, which has regularly traveled to Gitmo to cover the terrorists’ military trials, reported that U.S. taxpayers bought the captives high-tech laptops and computer lessons.

That brilliant idea is part of a plan to reintroduce the prisoners into a modern society when the president fulfills his campaign promise of releasing them. They have been taught to send electronic mail and have received language and basic user skills training to help them find jobs when the leave the military prison.

Last year was an especially good one for terrorist rights at Gitmo. The administration actually let 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed (KSM) dispatch propaganda from his Gitmo jail cell, undoubtedly aiding and abetting more terrorism.

The manifesto, authored by the enemy combatant who’s admitted being the architect of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, was 36 pages long and received extensive media coverage worldwide. KSM has boasted of waging jihad against the U.S. and other non-Muslim nations and his Pentagon file reveals he’s a senior Al Qaeda recruiter financier and operational planner for the group’s global terrorist network. The document confirms that KSM was the “mastermind of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the hijacking of United Airlines flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.”

In 2014 the Obama administration also allowed a fighter (Moath al-Alwi) in bin Laden’s 55^th Arab Brigade to publish a sob letter in an international media outlet describing the “humiliating and brutal treatments” he suffers at the U.S. military compound. 

Al-Alwi is a Yemeni national who served as bin Laden’s bodyguard and is described by the Pentagon as a veteran jihadist and fighter.

Authorities at the prison also let the captives operate a “Business School Behind Bars” with an accused Al Qaeda financier as the self-appointed “dean of students.” Among the brilliant plans the jailed Islamic militants have come up with is a utopian, self-sufficient milk and honey farm in their native Yemen. It features a community with 200 families, 100 farmhouses, farm animals and computers.
