Islamist Turkey deploying troops to Qatar, the 'Muslim brotherhood' threat to U.S. Troops stationed in Qatar?

Islamist Turkey deploying troops to Qatar, the 'Muslim brotherhood' threat to U.S. Troops stationed in Qatar? (AlAraby).

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has signed a military deal with Qatar that includes the deployment of Turkish troops to a new Turkish military base in the Gulf nation to help "counter threats to both countries".

Davutoglu concluded the deal on Thursday while on a two-day visit to Qatar to meet with his Qatari counterpart Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah and the Qatari Interior Minister Abdallah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.

The two long-time allies have both provided support for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and Syrian rebel groups fighting the Bashar al-Assad regime.

"There has been exceptionally high-level strategic cooperation in the defence and military fields between Turkey and Qatar," Davutoglu said.

He said that his country's first overseas military base in the Middle East "was not directed at against any nation" but that it was a "presence for stability".
"I can tell you now that the security and stability of Qatar is like the security and stability of Turkey. We want a stable and secure Gulf. Turkey and Qatar, we have the same destiny. We face the same threats," he added.
The number of soldiers to be deployed was not specified.

The Turkish base was first announced last December when the two countries signed a defence agreement aimed at helping confront "common enemies".

At the time, Turkish envoy Ahmet Demirok said that 3,000 ground troops would be stationed at the base as well as air and naval units, military trainers and special operations forces.

The number of Turkish troops currently deployed to Qatar is unclear, Demirok said in December that there were 100 servicemen training with Qatar's military.

Ankara's defence minister said last month that the military base will be ready within two years and that that Qatari military personnel and aircraft currently stationed in Turkey as a part of the reciprocal.

An agreement signed in 2014 and ratified by Turkey's parliament last June intensified the partnership with Qatar at a time of rising instability and a perceived waning of US interest in the region.

Qatar is already home to the biggest air base in the Middle East, Al Udeid, where some 10,000 military personnel are stationed, and is the forward headquarters of United States Central Command. Hmmm.....My guess in the not so far future Qatar will politely thank the U.S. for it's past presence and ask them to leave now that 'Big Islamist Brother' Turkey is there to protect them -----> PS:

Video - Syrian 'Turkmen' commander who 'killed' Russian pilot turns out to be Turkish ultra nationalist.

Video - Syrian 'Turkmen' commander who 'killed' Russian pilot turns out to be Turkish ultra nationalist. (RT).

A Syrian rebel commander who boasted of killing a Russian pilot after Turkey downed Russian jet on Tuesday appeared to be Turkish ultra nationalist and a son of former mayor in one of Turkish provinces.

Alparslan Celik, deputy commander of a Syrian Turkmen brigade turned out to be the son of a mayor of a Keban municipality in Turkey’s Elazig province.

He also turned out to be the member of The Grey Wolves ultra nationalist group, members of which have carried out scores of political murders since 1970s.

Celic came under spotlight after he announced that as the two Russian pilots descended by parachute after the Su-24 jet was downed by Turkish military, both were shot dead by Turkmen forces on Tuesday.

A graphic video posted earlier on social media purported to show a Russian pilot lying on the ground surrounded by a group of armed militants. Hmmm........Just part of Erdo's plan to have a Syrian - Turkmen satellite state, populated by ex Turks.

'Sometimes NATO-member' Turkey defending Islamic State while killing Kurds.

'Sometimes NATO-member' Turkey defending Islamic State while killing Kurds. (RT).

Srdja Trifkovic, foreign affairs editor for the magazine Chronicles, said the Turkish Air Force dropped the vast majority of their bombs not on Islamic State positions in Syria, but on those very groups fighting this terrorist scourge, namely the Kurds and the Syrian Army.

Over 80 percent of the tonnage of their bombs would drop on the Kurds fighting ISIS in Northern Syria and North Western Iraq,” Trifkovic told RT. “Turkey has been consistent in pursuing its own agenda which is to pretend to be fighting ISIS while settling scores with the two parties that are actually capable of fighting ISIS on the ground.”

"It is perfectly consistent with Turkish behavior since it ostensibly joined the anti-ISIS campaign last July,” he added.

But that is just part of the story. The NATO member is not only opportunistically attacking a political foe instead of a bona fide terrorist threat, but is actually helping to fund them.

Larry Johnson, retired CIA and State Department officer told RT: “Turkey has been a major instigator, major sponsor of terrorist activity, of the activity of these radical Islamists and for them to pretend otherwise as a joke.”

Perhaps it was no coincidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin chose the G20 in the Turkish city of Antalya to disclose the shocking information that terrorism is being financed by individual businessmen from 40 countries, including from member states of the G20.

"I provided examples related to our data on the financing of Islamic State units by natural persons in various countries. The financing comes from 40 countries, as we established, including some G20 members," Putin told reporters following the summit.

This earth-shattering news barely registered a blip on the Western mainstream media radar.

Just days after Putin's hot potato landed in the lap of the Western elite, a Russian fighter jet on a mission to take out Islamic State targets was shot out of the sky by two Turkish F-16 fighter jets – without due warning or provocation.

One of the pilots was reportedly killed by ground fire from 'moderate rebels' with ties to Turkey. Hmmmm.......And here comes their Turkmen 'Cat' out of the bag. Read the full story here.

Syrian Grand Mufti: 'They want to divide us into several quasi-states'.

Syrian Grand Mufti: 'They want to divide us into several quasi-states'. (RBTH).

The civil war in Syria is witnessing the participation of representatives of the most varied faiths and from all sides. Some of the conflicting sides are using religious slogans for mobilizing their adherents. Syrian Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun speaks about how to stop the bloodshed and why the root of the conflict lies not only in religious antagonisms.

There is a common narrative that the civil war taking place in Syria is an interreligious conflict. Is this so?

It is true that in the four years of the war it has always been depicted as an interreligious war. But it's not so. Everyone is running from the places controlled by the Islamic State (IS) or the al-Nusra Front: Christians, Sunnis and Alawites. And they are running to places where the Syrian army is established. The provinces of Al-Raqqah and Idlib are regions where only Sunnis live, yet for some reason those same Sunnis are running away from the al-Nusra Front, which positions itself as the "protector of the Sunnis."

Syria is a secular state and 70 years ago we even had a Christian prime minister. We are currently the only country in the Middle East where children in school have only one subject on religion. In the universities Christians and Muslims study together. In order to enter the government it is not necessary to represent one faith or another.

How would you then characterize this conflict?

The war is now being fought between religious terrorism and the secular government. The war in Syria is not an interreligious war and not a war to topple Assad. It is a war to destroy Syria as the last secular government in the Middle East. All the other Middle Eastern countries became states with a defined religious order a long time ago. This is the case even for Lebanon. It is clearly divided according to religion in several parts: the former president was a Maronite Christian, the speaker of parliament is a Shiite and it is only this balance that helps maintain peace there.

In Jordan the king must be a Hashemite. In Saudi Arabia the ruling dynasty is Sunni and must be composed of members of the Saudi family. In Iraq the president must be a Sunni and the prime minister a Shiite. In Turkey the president must only be a Muslim.

Syria remains the only country where the president and the prime minister can be Christians or Shiites or Alawites or Sunnis or even atheists. They want to divide us into several religious quasi-states.

Why then did the war begin and why are government opposition so strong?
In this sense, what is happening in our country has a non-Syrian nature. It is enough to say that from the first day of the war there were two bases: one in Jordan and another in Turkey. For three years Syria had resisted all these forces rather successfully. Then they provoked the entry of the IS into our country. Now there are 30,000 Uyghur Muslims from China and militants from Chechnya, the UK and a series of European countries fighting against us. They are all killing people regardless of the faiths that the victims adhere to. By the way, these terrorists have killed more Sunnis during the war than anyone else.

When representatives of Saudi Arabia said that Russia is supporting the Shiites against the Sunnis, Putin correctly responded that Russia is just supporting the Syrians in their war against terrorists and not the government of the country or the Shiites or anyone else. Read the full story here.

US military expands travel restrictions to 'Sometimes NATO Ally' Turkey.

US military expands travel restrictions to 'Sometimes NATO Ally' Turkey. (Stripes).

U.S. Army Europe has implemented a ban on travel to Turkey by Defense Department personnel given growing security concerns in the country.

All military and civilian workers, including those with dual citizenship, are prohibited from unofficial travel through Nov. 9, USAREUR announced on its Facebook page.

Official travel requires general officer approval.

After Nov. 9, unofficial and official travel — including ship-to-shore travel from cruises in Turkey — will also require general officer approval, USAREUR said.

In addition, DOD employees traveling in Turkey “should avoid public protests, demonstrations, rallies or other large gatherings to the greatest extent possible,” USAREUR said. “They should remain alert to suspicious behavior and be aware of their surroundings at all times.”

The decision expands travel restrictions already in place.

Since August, the military has restricted all travel to southeastern Turkey, where general officer approval has been required for official and unofficial visits.

Before making travel plans to Turkey, whether for official reasons or vacation, DOD personnel should talk to their organization’s security or antiterrorism officers,” USAREUR said. Read the full story here.

'Yes We Can' - Putin Meets Assad for Talks in Moscow.

'Yes We Can' - Putin Meets Assad for Talks in Moscow. (Fars).

Dmitry Peskov announced that Assad informed Putin about the situation in Syria and the plans of government forces, RT reported.

"Yesterday evening Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Moscow for a working visit," Peskov said.

The two leaders conducted lengthy negotiations, which then continued in the presence of Russia’s top policymakers.

"The agenda of the negotiations is clearly understandable. President [Putin] was informed in detail by his Syrian counterpart about the current state of affairs in Syria and the long-range plan," the Kremlin spokesman added.

Vladimir Putin said that the Syrian people have been confronting terrorists “practically single-handedly” for years, withstanding considerable casualties. Lately, they have achieved serious and positive results in this fight, he added.

The terrorists’ attempts to destabilize the situation in the Middle East arouse deep concern in Russia because “unfortunately, people from the former Soviet republics, at least 4,000 of them, are fighting against the Syrian army,” the Russian leader said. "Naturally, we cannot allow them to appear on Russian territory with all the combat experience and ideological brainwashing they have gone through."

Syria is a country friendly to Russia, and Moscow is ready not only to assist with fighting terrorism, but also in reaching a peaceful political settlement to the Syrian conflict in cooperation with other global and regional powers, Putin said.

The decisive word, without any doubt, must belong solely to the Syrian people,” President Putin stressed.

Assad thanked Russia for the support provided to Syria in fighting for its sovereignty and unity.

"Terrorists would have occupied far greater territories if it were not for Russia’s military assistance,” President Assad said, adding that political steps are due to follow military action. "The only aim for all of us should be what the Syrian people want as a future for their country," he underlined.

Once the terrorists are defeated, it will take a united effort to rebuild the country economically and politically and to ensure peaceful coexistence for all, Assad concluded.

The Syrian president reportedly returned to his home country earlier on Wednesday. "The visit to Moscow was yesterday and he is today in Damascus," a spokesman for the presidency said.  More here.

PYD co-chair Saleh Moslem: "50 tons of ammo received, more are underway"

PYD co-chair Saleh Moslem: "50 tons of ammo received, We do not attack anyone but we will defend ourselves against those who attack us” (ANF).
PYD co-chair Saleh Moslem confirmed that they have recently received weapons from U.S. forces and said “We do not attack anyone but we will defend ourselves against those who attack us” in response to the threats uttered by Turkish Prime Minister.
PYD co-chair Saleh Moslem answered ANF's questions regarding the recent airdrops of weapons to the Kurdish region by the U.S. and Turkish Prime Minister's threat that “We could intervene the PYD”.

Moslem told ANF that the weapons sent to them are being used against the ISIS and will not be used anywhere else other than Rojava. He called on Turkey to “abandon the policy of enmity”.

Giving information about the weapons airdropped by the U.S. Forces to the region under their control, Moslem said that “A total of 50 tons of ammunition was airdropped for us and the groups we are in alliance with. This is just the beginning; more weapons are to be sent

Stressing that Turkish PM DavutoÄŸlu had better abandon purposeless threats, Moslem said “These weapons have been given not only to us but also to the Arab groups we act together. Claims that the weapons will be used against Turkey or in some other places are just a distortion. These weapons suffice only our needs. We defend ourselves against the ISIS with these weapons and it is by no means the case that they will go to PKK or be used in Turkey”.

Regarding Turkish Prime Minister DavutoÄŸlu's threats that “we could intervene against the PYD”, Moslem said “If Turkey attacks Rojava, we will defend ourselves. We do not attack anyone, but we will defend ourselves against those who attack us. We have always called Turkey to fraternity and never been engaged in an unfavorable attitude towards them”.

Regarding the question if the PYD and Turkey had any contacts recently, Moslem asked “How can we ever have talks with those who call us ‘terrorist’ every day?”

PYD co-chair lastly stated that operations against Raqqa and Jarablus are on the table and that they are working only for the timing of the operations at the moment. He added that Russia would be positive about the operation.

Islamic State terror can be ended only after Saudi royals’ overthrown according to Iranian MP

IS terror can be ended only after Saudi royals’ overthrown -Iranian MP  (TAZ).

The terrorist groups in the region including the Islamic State (IS) group may be defeated only by downfall of the ruling monarchy in Saudi Arabia Ibrahim Agha Mohammadi, a senior Iranian MP said.

The best approach in fighting the Daesh (IS, also referred as ISIS, ISIL) is supporting the overthrow of Saudi royals, and the Islamic Republic is in favor of this process,” Agha Mohammadi, who is a member of the Iranian parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said, semi-official Tasnim news agency reported Sept. 29.

The Iranian MP was reacting to recent comments of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, who accused Tehran of being behind regional instability.

"If it was not for Iran, there would not be the destruction and killing we see today in Syria. Iran supports Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad by sending thousands of militants and fueling sectarianism between Sunnis and Shiites in Syria and the whole region," said Minister Al-Jubeir.

Meanwhile the Iranian MP claimed that the Saudi government is “equal to the IS group and other regional terrorists”.

If the global community seeks an effective approach to end IS terror, they should spare no effort for establishing democracy in Saudi Arabia, Agha Mohammadi argued.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have opposite points of view and positions on conflicts in Yemen, Syria , and Bahrain. Hmmm.....The Iranian MP is a fool if he believes that, Turkey and Qatar play a huge role in the ISIS and terrorist support.

Israeli PM Netanyahu : Israel, Russia establish 'mechanism' to prevent 'misunderstandings' in Syria

Israeli PM Netanyahu : Israel, Russia establish 'mechanism' to prevent 'misunderstandings' in Syria. (JPost).

Israel and Russia agreed to a create mechanism to prevent accidental confrontation between their forces in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said following a meeting on the outskirts of Moscow Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Netanyahu, in a phone briefing with Israeli diplomatic reporters, said that the meeting was devoted to the complicated situation on Israel's northern border.

I made clear our policy to try to prevent through various means the transfer of lethal weapons from Syria to Hezbollah, which is actually done at the direction of Iran,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu said that the purpose of the meeting was to prevent “misunderstandings” between IDF and Russian forces. “We established a mechanism to prevent those misunderstandings,” he said, without elaborating. “This is something very important for Israel's security.Read the full story here.

Netanyahu and army chiefs Meeting Putin In Moscow Over Military Ground rules?

Netanyahu and army chiefs Meeting Putin In Moscow Over Military Buildup.(JPost)

IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and Military Intelligence chief Maj.-Gen. Herzl Halevi will accompany Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a lightning trip to Moscow on Monday, in a clear signal that regional arms transfers and Russia’s troop deployments in Syria will be the main focus of the discussions.

Top IDF generals very rarely accompany the prime minister on his trips abroad, with the premier’s military attaché generally the only uniformed officer who joins these overseas trips.

The seriousness with which Israel is taking the new developments in Syria, and Russia’s growing troop physical involvement there, is reflected in Netanyahu’s decision to bring both Eisenkot and Halevi on the trip.

Netanyahu is also expected to discuss with Putin Russia’s decision to supply Iran with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles.

Moscow has so far refused to provide that system to Syria, heeding Israel’s concern that those missiles could take down aircrafts flying over Israel.

A former strategic adviser to Netanyahu, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Israeli leader hopes to establish some type of "ground rules" with Putin in order to avoid accidental incidents.

The United States has reportedly also held "deconfliction" talks with Russia in recent days.Read the full story here.

ISIS Supporters Share Secret List Of Twitter Accounts They Claim Report On Them So Twitter Will Shut Them Down.

ISIS Supporters Share Secret List Of Twitter Accounts They Claim Report On Them So Twitter Will Shut Them Down. HT: Memri.

Islamic State (ISIS) supporters are circulating a list of 1,400 Twitter accounts that they say are reporting their accounts to Twitter so that the latter will shut them down.

The circulation of the list, according to the user who shared it, is aimed at allowing ISIS supporters to block the accounts on it, so that there is less of a chance that they will be reported to Twitter.

While the circulation of the list neither stops Twitter from shutting down pro-ISIS accounts nor stops anyone from reporting such accounts, those sharing the list claimed that pro-ISIS Twitter accounts that block enough anti-ISIS accounts cuts down on the possibility that the former will be recognized as pro-ISIS and reported.

It is notable that this list is being shared clandestinely among jihadis, in what appears to be an attempt to increase its success rate

Several safety checks were put in place to ensure that it remains secret:

The announcement of the list was first posted on September 15, 2015, on the Shumoukh Al-Islam forum, by one “al-Maqdisi.” This site is a password-protected pro-ISIS forum.

The post did not include the actual list or links to download it. Instead, al-Maqdisi asked anyone interested in the list to contact him directly via a private message on the forum.

Thousands of ‘village guard’ militiamen to be hired by 'Advanced Islamist Democracy' Turkey.

Thousands of ‘village guard’ militiamen to be hired by 'Advanced Islamist Democracy' Turkey. (Bugun).

Turkey is to hire 5,000 “village guards”, Interior Minister Selami Altınok said Saturday, as violence in the southeast and east of the country shows no sign of easing.

Altınok said the guards would be deployed to 22 provinces in the region, where Turkish security forces are fighting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists following the renewal of the group’s armed campaign in late July.

According to the Federation of Provisional Village Guards, Turkey currently employs 46,000 guards under a militia system established in the 1980s.

The Republic of Turkey can eliminate this trouble and is determined to tackle it,” Altınok said at a veterans’ lunch in Aksaray, central Turkey. “The fight against terrorism will be maintained in a determined way until the terrorist organization PKK lay down their arms."

“With the instructions of the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu, we are set to start hiring almost 5,000 village guards in the 22 eastern and southeastern provinces to be more effective in the guard system.”

Since July, more than 100 members of the security forces have been martyred and hundreds of PKK members killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq, including airstrikes.

The Kurdish conflict reignited following the July 20 suicide bomb attack in Suruç, Åžanlıurfa province, marking the end of fragile peace discussions known as the "solution process". Hmmm......The Republic of Turkey 'can eliminate this trouble'......final ' Endlösung'? Reminds me of the Turkmen army to 'deal' with the kurds.

When two global superpowers decide to end a war, it happens.

When two global superpowers decide to end a war, it happens.(HD).

It looks like this will be the outcome in Syria after Russia’s latest overture. It may seem like a brutal blow to Ankara’s “Death to Assad” policies but in the long run, Russia and the United States have agreed on keeping Turkey in one piece. And that means more than words.

According to Washington’s highly placed sources, the U.S. has made a decision “not to support some of the opposition groups at any cost.” Not surprisingly, these were the groups that Turkey had proposed for the “Train-and-Equip” Program. Instead, the U.S. had taken the matter into its own hands to create a fighting force against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Gen. Lloyd Austin, the head of U.S. Central Command, said this during his testimony at the Senate Armed Services Committee:

“What our Special Operations forces have done in northern Syria is that they didn’t wait for the New Syrian Force program or train-and-equip program to fully develop. At the very onset, they began to engage elements like the [Kurdish People’s Defense Units] YPG and enable those elements, and they are making a difference on the battlefield.”

The U.S. is not alone in the effort. Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning to unveil a detailed plan for Syria at the U.N. Summit on Sept. 28. Yes, that summit, which President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan decided not to go to because he could not get a one-on-one with President Barack Obama.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced military-to-military talks between Russia and the U.S. about Syria. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu will be visiting Moscow to talk about Syria. Iran has made its position clear about fighting ISIL. Turkey is not only missing a chance to shape the events in its backyard, it is failing to get involved in the most crucial issue in its Kurdish peace talks.

The irony is this may be actually good for Turkey at this point in history. The powers that be are watching how Turkey will turn into a more pluralistic, democratic society. They will not allow Turkey to become another Syria. And they will do it “their way.” Hmmmm.....That won't stop 'the Caliph of the Muslim Brotherhood' to keep planning his future conquests. Three suspects of Turkish origin have been charged with espionage in an indictment prepared by the German attorney-general that includes wiretapped phone conversations revealing transfers of huge sums of money and claims of Germany being the true enemy of Turkey.

Blasius said the police prepared 3,300 pages of transcripts from more than 20,000 wiretapped phone and Internet communications. Police only mentioned the headings of the transcripts in court, without going into detail. How US training helped shape Islamic State’s top military commander Abu Omar al-Shishani.

How US training helped shape Islamic State’s top military commander Abu Omar al-Shishani.(StarandStripes).

Abu Omar al-Shishani, as he’s now known, had been born Tarkhan Batirashvili 27 years earlier in Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge, a tiny enclave of ethnic Chechens, known locally as Kists, whose roughly 10,000 residents represent virtually all of the Muslims in predominantly Orthodox Christian Georgia.

But analysts of extremist groups said Batirashvili’s impact has been far greater than the small numbers of Muslims in Georgia would suggest. Since he swore allegiance to the Islamic State in 2013, thousands of Muslims from the Caucasus have flocked to Syria to join the extremist cause.

More than anything else, Batirashvili has legitimized ISIS in the Caucasus by the power of his exploits, which is amplified by slick ISIS propaganda,” said Michael Cecire, an analyst of extremism for the Philadelphia-based Foreign Policy Research Institute.

Batirashvili’s battlefield successes, including orchestrating the capture of Syria’s Menagh Air Base after two years of failed attempts, “helped to legitimize ISIS in militant circles, including in the North Caucasus,” Cecire said.

In the North Caucasus, young people no longer wanted to fight in Syria with the increasingly marginalized Caucasus Emirate (groups), but wanted to fight with the winners — ISIS.”

We trained him well, and we had lots of help from America,” said a former Georgian defense official who asked to not be identified because of the sensitivity of Batirashvili’s role in the Islamic State. “In fact, the only reason he didn’t go to Iraq to fight alongside America was that we needed his skills here in Georgia.”

Batirashvili’s mother was Chechen, and his father has told local journalists that young Batirashvili had seen a handful of military operations as a rebel in Chechnya before joining Georgia’s military in 2006 at age 20.

According to Batirashvili’s ex-comrades in the Georgian military, Batirashvili was tapped immediately upon his enlistment to join Georgia’s U.S.-trained special forces.

“He was a perfect soldier from his first days, and everyone knew he was a star,” said one former comrade, who asked not to be identified because he remains on active duty and has been ordered not to give media interviews about his former colleague. “We were well-trained by American special forces units, and he was the star pupil.”

Traveling to Turkey, even before the Syrian civil war, wouldn’t have been an unusual choice. Istanbul had been a destination for Chechen jihadists and gangsters for years. With Turkish roots, Chechens were welcome in Istanbul, able to disappear easily among the ethnic Chechens living in Turkey’s largest city.Read the full story here. More on him here.

Europol tracking 30,000 suspected people smugglers.

SOURCE.

Europol tracking 30,000 suspected people smugglers. (DailyStar).

As many as 30,000 people could be involved in the trafficking gangs charging refugees thousands of euros for a perilous trip to Europe, the head of Europe's police agency said Wednesday.

Rob Wainwright said the discovery of 71 bodies in the back of a truck in Austria last month led Europol to the massive people smuggling operation and the identification of that number of suspects - far larger than the agency had thought.

"The tragic incident in Austria is symptomatic of an explosion in the criminal problem we are seeing right now," he told Reuters. "Thousands of criminals are flocking to this spot, this mass movement of migrants and refugees."

"This year alone we have collected info on up to 30,000 suspected criminals and their associates involved in this. That shows you the magnitude of the criminal activity that is ongoing at the moment," he said.

Europol, which has roughly 950 staff working out of The Hague, is coordinating 1,400 different people smuggling investigations across the continent, Wainwright said. Hmmm.....ISIL would be insane not to use this opportunity to settle inside the whole EU.

Russia's recent military buildup in Syria has perplexed the Obama administration

Russia's recent military buildup in Syria has perplexed the Obama administration.(AP).

Russia's recent military buildup in Syria has perplexed the Obama administration and left it in a quandary as to how to respond, complicating Washington's efforts to both combat Islamic State extremists and assist moderate rebels trying to oust Syria President Bashar Assad.

Underscoring U.S. uncertainty about Russian President Vladimir Putin's intentions, Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday placed his third phone call in 10 days to Russia's foreign minister, seeking clarity about Moscow's moves, the State Department said.

"Kerry made clear that Russia's continued support for President Assad risks exacerbating and extending the conflict, and undermining our shared goal of fighting extremism if we do not also remain focused on finding a solution to the conflict in Syria via a genuine political transition," the department said in a statement.

In the afterglow of the Iran nuclear deal, which was hailed by the Obama administration as the kind of diplomacy that can be achieved when Russia and the United States cooperate, U.S. officials had hoped for a change in Russia's position about Syria, potentially even enlisting its support to move Assad out.

Moscow's latest actions, however, have taken many by surprise and further muddied efforts to fight Islamic State militants while trying to promote political transition in Syria.

In recent days Russia has sent about a half-dozen battle tanks and other weaponry — along with military advisers, technicians, security guards and portable housing units — to Syria with the apparent goal of setting up an air base near the coastal town of Latakia, a stronghold of the Syrian president.

But U.S. officials say Putin's intentions in Syria, particularly in the medium- to long-term, remain a mystery. Read the full story here.
