Minsk peace talks on Ukraine end without any agreement.

Minsk peace talks on Ukraine end without any agreement. (UAE).

Another round of peace talks on Ukraine, ending without any agreements. Representatives from Russia, Ukraine, east Ukraine militants and Europe's OSCE watchdog debated long into the night at this hotel in the Belarusian capital Minsk on Monday.

Four main themes were discussed - based around security, the economy, politics and humanitarian issues. In particular, the demilitarization of the Azov Sea coastal village of Shyrokyne and the extension of a buffer zone along other parts of the front line.

Martin Sajdik, OSCE representative at talks: "Work is being conducted, as you know, on the agreement on the pullback of tanks and artillery - calibre of up to 100mm and mortars of a calibre of up to 120mm. This work will continue tomorrow."

Plans to create a buffer zone east of Mariupol have angered a proportion of local residents and Ukrainian fighters. They argue Russian-backed militant units would launch a fresh advance along the coastline, if Ukrainian forces were to give up land in line with any political agreement.

Diplomat talk of a largely-held ceasefire in eastern Ukraine has not mirrored along parts of the front line, where Ukrainian troops and joint Russian-separatist forces blame each other for launching attacks. Read the full story here.

IDF Appoints Special Team to Plan Strike on Iran.

IDF Appoints Special Team to Plan Strike on Iran. (INN).

As world powers and Iran reach a deadline Tuesday - which may be extended - for talks on the Islamic regime's nuclear program, Israel is taking steps to prepare for a military strike on Tehran's nuclear facilities so as to defend itself from the impending threat.

The Hebrew-language Walla! reported Tuesday that it has learned from a foreign source that IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot has appointed Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yair Golan to head a special team tasked with examining the military options against Iran.

The team would explore what kind of striking options are available to Israel after a deal with Iran is signed.

For over 15 years the IDF has been examining the possibility of military action against Iran's ever burgeoning nuclear program, and the majority of the funding for such preparedness has gone to the Israeli Air Force (IAF) and the IDF's intelligence branch.

A source close to Ya'alon was quoted by Walla! saying, "nothing has changed regarding the military option. Our working assumption is that Iran is lying all the time, beyond the fact that it is funding and directing terror in the Middle East. It (Iran) is our most bitter enemy today, even though we don't share a physical border with it, and we must not put off any kind of preparedness against it."

"In the end we don't believe Iran. We don't believe the (nuclear) project will be stopped. Therefore the (military) option will remain. ...We need to be ready also for the day in which Israel will need to make decisions alone. (What) if it becomes clear they are pushing the envelope in breach of the agreement? Or if Iran goes down deep underground (with its nuclear facilities)? And if new sites are found? Will we wait for the US to take care of them?"

"You have to prepare yourself for all of the threats. Not only for Gaza and Lebanon," added the source. "The military option costs money but the more time goes by, you're better prepared to carry out the mission."

Indicating Israel's growing preparedness ahead of a potential military clash with Iran, the IAF held a special drill with the Greek air force two months ago, in which roughly 100 members of the IAF took part including dozens of crews from all the F-16i squadrons.

The unusual drill had IAF pilots operating in unfamiliar territory for a night and the following day, and included simulations of strikes and dogfights involving dozens of fighter jets.

Most importantly, in the drill the Greek army reportedly deployed advanced anti-missile defense systems similar to the Russian S-300 that Moscow sold to Iran and has yet to ship. The advanced S-300 system is considered to be a major challenge in carrying out an airstrike in that it can shoot down rockets as well as jets. Hmmm......What could go wrong? Iran's BFF Obama might warn Iran or might try to stop Israeli fighters. Read the full story here.

'Flexibility' - Two Russian Bear bombers enter U.S. Air defense zone; Obama 'admin' doesn't react.

'Flexibility' - Two Russian Bear bombers enter U.S. Air defense zone; Obama 'admin' doesn't react. (FB).

Two Russian nuclear-capable bombers intruded into the U.S. air defense zone near Alaska last week in the latest saber rattling by Moscow, defense officials said.

The Tu-95 Bear H bombers flew into the Alaska zone on April 22. But unlike most earlier incursions, no U.S. interceptor jets were dispatched to shadow them, said defense officials familiar with the latest U.S.-Russian aerial encounter.

Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a spokesman for the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), declined to confirm the incursion. But he said no jets were dispatched last week to intercept intruding aircraft.

The incident was the first Russian bomber incursion of a U.S. or Canadian air defense zone this year. Officials said it likely signals the start of Russia’s long-range aviation spring training cycle. Further aerial incursions are expected.

Last year, U.S. and Canadian jets intercepted Russian bombers on at least six occasions, and intruding Russian long-range aircraft were detected on 10 occasions, Davis said.

Despite remaining in international airspace, “we believe that if the Russian military filed flight plans and self-identified—by ‘squawking and talking’—the overall safety of flight would be enhanced,” Davis said.

These flights often enter the U.S. or Canadian [air defense identification zone], but have not entered U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace,” he said, adding that the flights are legal since the ADIZ is not sovereign airspace. Hmmmmm.......Once it becomes a 'habit' you become sloppy, that's when they get you! Read the full story here.

Putin: "Angara" carrier rocket will be used for defensive purposes. (Tass).[GoogleTranslate].

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans to use the new launch vehicle "Angara" not only for the needs of the economy, but also for defense purposes.

"Today was the first successful test launch rocket" Angara ", - informed the head of state colleagues from the CSTO. "The missile will be used not only for the needs of the economy, of course, but also for strengthening Russia's defense capability, which means that all participants of the CSTO," - he said.

Putin said that the new missile is useful for "Early-warning radar, reconnaissance, navigation, communication and relay various signals for defense purposes."

Russian President noted that the launch of the "Angara" for Russia - an important and enjoyable event. "

" We for many years, for the past ten years actively worked to develop, launch vehicles heavy class "Angara A5", and today there was a The first successful test launch of the rocket, "- said the president. He said that the missile" designed to launch into low circular orbit a payload weighing up to 24.5 tons, vysokoellepticheskie orbit weighing up to 7 tons to geostationary - up 3.4 m '.

"It's serious work, which in this part of the program is completed," - stated Putin. Hmmmm.....Shows again that Iran's 'Space rocket program' could be used to build ICBM's.

Russia Deploys Mobile Border Guard Teams to Border With Ukraine – FSB

Russia Deploys Mobile Border Guard Teams to Border With Ukraine – FSB. (RN).
Russia has deployed mobile teams of border guards to the vicinity of the border with Ukraine, but they are to operate strictly on the Russian side, a spokesman for Russia’s FSB Border Guard Service said Friday.
The spokesman said that residents of the border territories are under threat due to increased numbers of Ukrainian servicemen crossing into Russia and frequent cross-border shelling.

“They [border guard groups] are operating solely on the territory of Russia. In this regard, the reports about a group of Russian servicemen crossing the Russian-Ukrainian border are completely untrue,” the spokesman said.

On Thursday, a number of foreign news agencies reported that a convoy of military vehicles with Russian license plates crossed into Ukraine via the Izvarino border checkpoint. Earlier on Friday, the UNN information agency, citing the Anti-Terrorist Center operating under the Security Service of Ukraine, reported that the reports had been confirmed. According to preliminary accounts of the alleged incident, the vehicles were carrying armed servicemen.

The Ukrainian government has long blamed Russia for funneling heavy equipment, arms and troops across the border with Ukraine to support the independence movement in the country’s eastern regions, a claim Moscow has repeatedly rejected.

Last week, Pengaton spokesman John Kirby said Russia had amassed 10,000 troops on the border with Ukraine. Shortly after, NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said 20,000 servicemen had already been deployed to the border. NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu added later that NATO is concerned that Russia might send troops into eastern Ukraine under the “pretext” of a humanitarian or peacekeeping mission.

Earlier this week NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said there was a “high probability” the humanitarian aid Russia dispatched to the crisis-plagued Ukrainian eastern regions might be a pretext for a military incursion into Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry has dismissed the allegations, calling them absurd.

At the same time, there are numerous reports of Ukrainian servicemen flowing into Russia. Earlier this month, 438 Ukrainian personnel, some employees of Ukraine’s State Border Service, requested refugee status in Russia.

The Russian-Ukrainian border has also been subjected to Ukrainian artillery shelling in the nearly four-month-long standoff between Ukraine’s national troops and eastern independence supporters. In total, one person has been killed and several others injured on Russian territory as a result of Ukrainian shelling since the military operation began.

Distinguished Law Professor: "My advice to Vladimir Putin, cut off all gas supplies to Europe."

Distinguished Law Professor: "My advice to Vladimir Putin, cut off all gas supplies to Europe."(RN).
Russia will do everything possible to end the bloodshed in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Thursday in his address to the heads of political parties.
The only reasonable reaction in light of the crisis in Ukraine and West-imposed sanctions  is to completely cut off energy deliveries to Europe, be it through Ukraine, or North Stream, says Francis Boyle, distinguished Professor of Law, in an interview to radio Voice of Russia.
Meanwhile, Russia has embarked on the humanitarian mission, approved by the Red Cross last week. 280 aid-loaded Russian Kamaz trucks are now heading to the Ukrainian border. The move may bring about different scenarios, though. The most favorable one for Europe seems to be that of Ukrainians shelling the convoy, which could be a pretext for a new war, the expert argues.

“Russian humanitarian relief convoy heading to the border of Ukraine could well be fired upon by Ukrainian forces. And at that point anything could happen.”

Mr. Boyle says “his advice to Vladimir Putin” would be to trump the European sanctions by cutting off all gas supplies to Europe “completely and immediately”.

He expresses certainty the move is well justified on the grounds of article 1 of the Genocide Convention, which Russia, Ukraine and all of Europe are all parties of.

Mr. Boyle says this requires all the states involved “to undertake, to prevent and to punish genocide”. At this point President Putin would have excellent legal ground to cut all the gas supplies to Ukraine and Europe, and thus stop the fall of Donetsk and Luhansk, he adds.

The fall of the predominantly Russian speaking cities would lead straight to an egregious massacre of their Russian-speaking residents, which must be stopped once and for all.

Cutting off gas supplies to Europe would be completely lawful, Mr. Boyle argues, citing his personal experience, as he worked in former Yugoslavia and stood on guard of the Bosnians’ interests in the 1992-1995 war.

I was a lawyer for Bosnia Herzegovina during the war, I argued their case for genocide in a war court. I won two war court orders against Yugoslavia, to cease acts of genocide against Bosnia. I am currently the attorney of record for the mothers of Srebrenica, many of the women who survived that massacre.”

Mr. Boyle points to the examples of Karadžić  and Mladić, who are currently on trial in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for genocide. “This is exactly what Ukraine is doing to Donetsk and Luhansk,” he states.

He says there’s no time to waste and Russia has by all means to respond in light of the latest wave of sanctions imposed on the country.

“I think President Putin should undertake this step immediately first to prevent the fall and massacre in Donetsk and Luhansk, and then second, who knows what will happen when that humanitarian relief convoy arrives at the border? It’s a thousand kilometers, maybe two days at best, and the Ukrainians could start shelling it.”

Professor Boyle says Europe is aiding and abetting Ukraine to commit genocide against the Russian speakers in Ukraine “in violation of article three paragraph E of the Genocide Convention “Complicit in genocide”.
”The only way to “bring Europe to senses” and stop the Donbass siege is to cut off gas supplies, he reiterates.

By vilifying President Putin the western world is apparently looking forward to waging a new war, and the chances are it will happen, says the expert. If the convoy is shot at and Putin is thus forced to send the troops to Ukraine, this is an appropriate scenario for the EU, and NATO forces will shortly start “pouring into Ukraine”. “There’s no question about that, they are already arrayed all around Ukraine”.

Mr. Boyle finds the case similar to what they [the US] did to Saddam Hussein when it pushed him into invading Kuwait, while President Bush Senior used this as a pretext to place 500,000 troops on the Iraqi territory. “They want to soccer President Putin into invading, or entering, Ukraine, however you want to call it, with military forces”. Russia will thus fall into the trap, he says.

Violence in eastern Ukraine has intensified in the recent time, with the UN saying some 2,086 people have been killed since the conflict began in mid-April. There has also been a surge in the number of Ukrainian refugees who continue to flee to Russia. As of August 11, they numbered more than 51,000 people. According to the UN, about 730,000 have chose to leave their homes and head for Russia since early 2014.

BREAKING Ukraine sanctions on Russia to include ban on energy transit.

BREAKING Ukraine sanctions on Russia to include ban on energy transit.(RT).

Ukraine’s Parliament has approved the first reading of an anti-Russian sanctions package that includes 29 measures that are said to be “an efficient reaction to potential threats to national interests and security.”

The bill proposed by the government was passed with 243 votes in favor.

All the amendments could be adopted and go through on a second reading on Tuesday, said Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Last week Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk introduced a bill to parliament sanctioning Russia that included a ban on all transit through its territory.

READ MORE: Ukraine may block all transit from Russia in a sanction row - PM

The bill contained 26 restrictions on Russia, but the most controversial was a ban on energy transit. Yatsenyuk hopes this will help halt his country’s dependence on Russian gas, but the EU might be hurt the hardest.

Europe gets about 15 percent of its gas requirements from Russia, with the Baltic States, Finland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic a hundred percent dependent on Russian supplies.

Gerhard Roiss, chief executive of the Austrian oil and gas company OMV, said on Tuesday that Ukraine stopping transit of Russian gas was an unrealistic scenario.

Experts suggest that ending transit through Ukraine could mean more support for Russia’s South Stream project which has been under EU scrutiny. The European Commission wants project leader Russia’s Gazprom to comply with anti-monopoly legislation.

On Monday Ukraine’s gas monopolist Naftogaz said it would need to sign new transit contracts with companies not on the sanctions list.

The talk was about European firms needing to buy gas from Gazprom at the Russia-Ukraine border, and then transport it via Ukraine, a Naftogaz spokesman explained to RBC.

A search for alternative routes to get Russian gas should also give a boost to another gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine – Nord Stream. Currently it is working at half capacity and a Ukraine transit ban could be the catalyst to have it fully working.

Ukraine imports nearly 50 percent of its natural gas from Russia, which in 2013 amounted to 27.7 billion cubic meters.

In June Gazprom, Russia’s national gas company announced it was stopping deliveries to Ukraine for the ‘chronic’ failure to pay its multi-billion dollar gas bill, but would continue to ship 180 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe.Hmmm....As i said many times before it's going to be a cold Russian Winter.

'Defaulter Of Gas Bills' Ukraine threatens to stop the transit of gas to Europe.

'Defaulter Of Gas Bills' Ukraine threatens to stop the transit of gas to Europe.(unzensuriert).[GoogleTranslate].
The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has threatened to stop the transit of gas between Russia and the European Union
Thus, the head of government is pouring oil on the fire again the current conflict in Eastern Europe.

Experts on the Russian side see in Jazenjuks announcements a "trick", as the Prime Minister would have to know that for a boycott of transit gas supplies between Russia and the EU at the end of the Ukraine would look like a big loser.

Igor Morozov, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council was compared with the Voice of Russia a clear evaluation to Jazenjuks verbal blackmail from:

Kiev currently plugged into an extremely complex political and economic situation and why the West must keep in mind that Ukraine which does not eat bread for nothing again.

Therefore, the Ukrainian authorities are willing to make the economic relations with Russia destroyed, and explain, they do everything what the West wants, give us money, we shall issue debt and loans granted us.

Russia warns EU against the double game of Ukraine

In particular, the role Jazenjuks, the holding, the Russian side for one of the main war-mongers in Kiev, you want to expose to the West. So Yatsenyuk recently had one . whipped "war tax" by the Kiev Parliament Vice-Chief of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, Vladimir Dschabarow, is even more explicit words and warns the EU before the double game of Ukraine:

I hope that Jazenjuks Western partners and directors make it clear that the transit of Russian gas to Europe is even vital. [...] The Ukraine must understand that the Ukrainian gas transport system ceases to exist forever, the authorities in Kiev should carry out their threats to disrupt the flow of gas to Europe, contends. Jazenjuks statement is a blatant stupidity. Because the freezing Europe will clearly not be able to help Ukraine. The Europeans should think about whether it is worthwhile to follow in the wake of Washington, when this runs counter to their national interests.

FPO: Ukraine wants to bring Europe cold winter

Sharp criticism of the Ukrainian threats also exerts the liberal National Council member Gerhard Deimek. "This threat is also a blow against the West The Ukraine seems to forget that they would break international agreements." Deimek refers to the Energy Charter Treaty . "We always heard of Vladimir Putin's gas weapon. Yet it is the EU allies in Ukraine, which are apparently willing to Europe to bring a cold winter," said Deimek.Hmmm.....As i said in many previous posts: "This will blow up come Autumn! If i were Putin i would start thinking about a 'Russian Winter Offensive"

"CHANGE" - Russian nuclear-capable bombers 'tested' US air defenses 16 times in last 10 days.

"CHANGE" - Russian nuclear-capable bombers 'tested' US air defenses 16 times in last 10 days.(RT).
Over the past week, NORAD has visually identified Russian aircraft operating in and around the US air defense identification zones,” said Maj. Beth Smith, spokeswoman for US Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
Smith sought to downplay the incursions that she called “a spike in activity,” telling the Washington Free Beacon’s Bill Gertz that the flights were assessed as routine training missions and exercises.

But an unnamed defense official familiar with the incursion reports disagreed with Smith’s assessment. “These are not just training missions,” the official told Gertz, saying that Russian strategic nuclear forces appear to be “trying to test our air defense reactions, or our command and control systems.”

NORAD scrambled fighter jets several times when Russian strategic aircraft flew along US ADIZs. The planes included a mix of Tu-95 Bear H heavy bombers and Tu-142 Bear F maritime reconnaissance aircraft, as well as one IL-20 intelligence collection aircraft, Smith said.

The bomber flights took place mainly along the Alaskan air defense identification zone that covers the Aleutian Islands and the continental part of the state, and one incursion involved entry into Canada’s air defense zone, she added.

“Such aerial bravado has been rare since the fall of the Soviet Union,” News.com.au wrote. “Until now.”

And it all appears to be a direct result of the cooling of relations between the West and Russia over the invasion of Crimea and the shooting-down of MH17,” the Australian News Corp site added.

During the Cold War, Soviet bombers sought to trigger US air defenses as preparation for a potential nuclear conflict.

The recent spike in activity after a surface-to-air missile brought down the Malaysia Airlines plane is not the first time Russian military planes were detected in US ADIZs this summer.

On June 9, a pair of Tu-95 Bear H aircraft maintained by Russia came close to US airspace during practice bombing while four of the planes were conducting bombing runs near Alaska, a NORAD spokesman told Gertz.

“After tracking the bombers as they flew eastward, two of the four Bears turned around and headed west toward the Russian Far East,” he wrote of the June incident. “The remaining two nuclear-capable bombers then flew southeast and around 9:30 P.M. entered the US northern air defense zone off the coast of Northern California.”

Those two aircraft, Gertz added, made it within 50 miles of the coast before turning around after a US F-15 intercepted them.

Russian aircraft have also made incursions into other countries’ airspace this year. In June, the UK’s Royal Air Force scrambled Typhoon fighter jets to intercept four flights of aircraft in the airspace around the Baltic states. The planes included advanced Tu-22M Backfire bombers, Su-27 Flanker interceptors, an A-50 Mainstay radar aircraft and a transport aircraft, News.com.au wrote.

Russian-owned Tu-95 bombers skirted UK airspace and have come close to US property in both Guam and California, The Aviationist reported in May.

Russia Tests Cruise Missile In Violation Of Arms Treaty U.S. Says; Obama Sends Putin A Letter.

Russia Tests Cruise Missile In Violation Of Arms Treaty U.S. Says; Obama Sends Putin A Letter.(NYT)

WASHINGTON — The United States has concluded that Russia violated a landmark arms control treaty by testing a prohibited ground-launched cruise missile, according to senior American officials, a finding that was conveyed by President Obama to Russian President Vladimir V. Putin in a letter on Monday.
It is the most serious allegation of an arms control treaty violation that the Obama administration has leveled against Russia and adds another dispute to a relationship already burdened by tensions over the Kremlin’s support for separatists in Ukraine and its decision to grant asylum to Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor.

In January, The New York Times reported that American officials had informed the NATO allies that Russia had tested a ground-launched cruise missile, raising serious concerns about Russia’s compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or I.N.F. treaty, as it is commonly called. The State Department said at the time that the issue was under review and that the Obama administration was not yet ready to formally declare it a treaty violation.

In recent months, however, the issue has been taken up by top-level officials, including a meeting this month of the Principals’ Committee, a cabinet-level body that includes Mr. Obama’s national security adviser, the defense secretary, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the secretary of state and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Senior officials said the president’s most senior advisers unanimously agreed that the test was a serious violation, and the allegation will be made public soon in the State Department’s annual report on international compliance with arms control agreements.

The United States has determined that the Russian Federation is in violation of its obligations under the I.N.F. treaty not to possess, produce or flight test a ground launched cruise missile (GLCM) with a range capability of 500 kilometers to 5,500 kilometers or to possess or produce launchers of such missiles,” that report will say.

In his letter to Mr. Putin, delivered by the American Embassy, Mr. Obama underscored his interest in a high-level dialogue with Moscow with the aim of preserving the 1987 treaty and discussing steps the Kremlin might take to come back into compliance. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a similar message in a Sunday phone call to Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister.

Because the treaty proscribes testing ground launched cruise missiles of medium-range, the Kremlin cannot undo the violation. But administration officials do not believe the cruise missile has been deployed and say there are measures the Russians can take to ameliorate the problem.

Administration officials declined to say what such steps might be, but arms control experts say they could include a promise not to deploy the system and inspections to demonstrate that the cruise missiles and their launchers have been destroyed. Because the missiles are small and easily concealed, obtaining complete confidence that the weapons have been eliminated might be difficult.

NATO’s top commander, Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, has said that the violation requires a response if it cannot be resolved.

A weapon capability that violates the I.N.F., that is introduced into the greater European land mass is absolutely a tool that will have to be dealt with,” he said in an interview in April. “It can’t go unanswered.”

Mr. Obama has determined that the United States will not retaliate against the Russians by violating the treaty and deploying its own prohibited medium-range system, officials said. So the responses might include deploying sea-launched and air-launched cruise missiles, which would be an allowable under the accord.
Republican lawmakers have repeatedly criticized the administration for dragging its feet on the issue. Ms. Gottemoeller, the State Department official has had no discussions with her Russian counterparts on the subject since February. And Mr. Kerry’s Sunday call was the first time he has directly raised the violation with Mr. Lavrov, State Department officials said. Administration officials said the upheaval in Ukraine pushed the issue to the back burner and that the downturn in American-Russia relations has led to an interruption of regular meetings on arms control.

The prospects for resolving the violation are also uncertain at best. After Ms. Gottemoeller first raised the matter in 2013, Russian officials said that they had looked into the matter and consider the issue to be closed.

The Russians have also raised their own allegations, a move that American officials believe it is intended to muddy the issue and perhaps give them leverage in any negotiations over compliance. One month after Ms. Gottemoeller raised the American concerns about the testing of the ground launched cruise missile, the Russians responded by pointing to the United States plans to base the Aegis missile system in Romania.

The Aegis system, which is commonly used on warships, would be used to protect American and NATO forces from missile attacks. But the Russians have alleged that it could be used to fire prohibited cruise missiles.

When Mr. Kerry spoke with Mr. Lavrov on Sunday, the Russian foreign minister cited Russia’s concerns over “decoys.” That may have been a reference to Russian charges that the targets that the United States uses in antimissile tests are an I.N.F. treaty violation. American officials regard that allegation, about the issue of the Aegis system and complaints about the use of targets, to be spurious.

An underlying concern of the Obama administration in dealing with the Russians is that the Kremlin may not be wedded to the I.N.F. agreement. During the George W. Bush administration, some Russians officials argued that the treaty should be dropped so that the Kremlin could develop its military capabilities to deal with threats on its periphery including China and Pakistan.

In a June 2013 meeting with Russian defense industry officials, Mr. Putin described Mr. Gorbachev’s decision to sign the accord as “debatable to say the least,” but asserted that Russia would uphold the agreement. Even some conservative American analysts say that in pursing the compliance concern the United States should not provide the Kremlin with an opportunity to back out of the agreement.

“For the United States to declare that we are pulling out of the treaty in response to what Russia has done would actually be welcome in Moscow because they are wrestling with the question of how they terminate,” Stephen Rademaker, a former Bush administration official, told the House Armed Services Committee earlier this month.

“We shouldn’t make it any easier for them,” he added. “We should force them to take the onus of that.”

Russian Planes Can Deliver Nuclear Strike Even At London From Belarus....or is the 'target' Brussels?

Russian Planes Can Deliver Nuclear Strike Even At London From Belarus....or is the 'target' Brussels? HT: charter97.

Russian aviation in Babruisk and Barabavichy poses a threat to entire Europe.

Military observer Aliaksandr Alesin said it to charter97.org commenting on possible stationing of Tu-160 Russian strategic bombers in Belarus.

– To what extent is it possible that these planes will be sent here?

– If we take only military arguments, it is not reasonable. Tu-160 is an intercontinental strategic bomber. Its range, to put it mildly, is 10,000 kilometres, but it can fly around the world with several in-flight refuellings. So, it doesn't matter where they are stationed. Taking into account that the plane's speed is more than 2,000 kilometres per hour, Belarus with a perimeter of 650 by 550 kilometres is the least comfortable place for it. Besides, Russia's unfriendly countries lie to the west, to the north and, to all appearances, to the south of the country. The plane has no place to fly except for the east. It even cannot perform normal practice flights.

– Do you mean it is more convenient for the planes to perform combat tasks from Russia?

– Yes. They are stationed on the Volga River, near the town of Engels. There's a long-range aviation base known from the Soviet times. If they arrive here in Belarus and probably take part in the parade, it will be a propagandist step to demonstrate Russia's readiness for decisive actions.

– Sending such planes that consume a lot of fuel only for the participation in the parade is not cheap, is it?

The matter is that nobody counts money during the war. I think Russia can afford it to back its oral threats in case of opening NATO bases in the Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine.

From the military point of view, it is enough to station Tu-22MZ long-range planes in Belarus which were designed for the European theatre of war.

Russia also has new perfect Su-34 fighter bombers that have excellent electronics and can carry various weapons. From the military point of view, it would be more reasonable to station these aircraft here.

In my opinion, Su-34 planes are an excellent tool to threaten Polish aerodromes, potential air defence systems in Poland and so on. Anyway, I think even the regiment of Su-27SMZ equipped with 300 km range missiles, which will be stationed here, will be more than enough to perform the tasks of containment and deterrence.

Moreover, they also can carry tactical nuclear weapons. They can fly about 1,500 kilometres without refuelling that is enough to threaten Berlin and even London.Hmmm......And NATO in Brussels.

"Yes we....Oh No we can't" - US missile defense system proves to be useless after $40 bln spent.

"Yes we....Oh No we can't" - US missile defense system proves to be useless after $40 bln spent.(RT).

Nevertheless, the Missile Defense Agency, or MDA, plans on conducting next week its ninth exercise of that costly system since 2004, and the outcome of the drill is expected to influence whether or not more than a dozen new interceptors are added to the United States’ arsenal.

According to a recent investigation by the Los Angeles Times, however, that system has so far been marred by mistakes that raise questions about its ability to thwart any major attack and the cost incurred during the last decade.

The results of the Times probe, published by the paper on Sunday this week, show that Pentagon officials with inside knowledge of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, or GMD, say the program has suffered from mishaps more often than the US government would have expected.

[A] decade after it was declared operational, and after $40 billion in spending, the missile shield cannot be relied on, even in carefully scripted tests that are much less challenging than an actual attack would be,” David Willman wrote for the Times over the weekend.

Official pronouncements about the GMD system, The Times found, have overstated its reliability.”

Results have been mixed to say the least since as far as 1999 when GMD testing first began — half of the first 16 tests of the system's ability to intercept a mock enemy warhead failed, the Times acknowledged. The system was finally upgraded to “operational” in 2004, but five of the eight tests held in the last decade have failed as well.

The GMD system is expected to intercept incoming missiles, like hypothetical attacks waged by adversaries such as Iran or North Korea. Even when US officials have scripted test drills to try out this ability, however, the GMD program has hardly acted as expected. The last successful intercept occurred five-and-a-half years ago, and the last three attempts — two in 2010 and one last July — all were unsuccessful.

Speaking before Congress, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) said “not just friends of the United States but even our enemies” will monitor the next round of testing in order to gauge the current abilities of the MDA program.

I’m also optimistic we have identified the cause of the intercept failure involving our first-generation EKV last July when the CE-1 failed to separate from the booster’s third stage,” Syring said. “We have accounted for this issue in the upcoming flight test and we are working toward a correction for the entire fleet before the end of the year.”

Regardless, Syring is appealing to Congress for $99.5 million to begin what he described Wednesday to the Times as "redesign improvement" that would stop short of a complete overhaul, sources familiar with the matter told the paper.

'Moderate' Iran official identifies Diego Garcia as potential second-strike target of war.

'Moderate' Iran official identifies Diego Garcia as potential second-strike target of war. HT: UskowiOnIran.

According to Iranian armed forces media outlet Defa Press (06JUN14):

Advisor to the Representative of the Supreme Leader in the IRGC Mojtaba Zonnour states that “in the event of an irrational [military attack] by the United States, America’s military bases will not be safe from our missiles, whether in Bahrain or at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.”

The advisor went on to state that such a policy was in response to the American policy of “all options are on the table,” where referring to the Iranian nuclear program.

It has been surmised by some military thinkers here in the West that Iranian efforts at increasing the range of their conventional ballistic missiles were not, as some alarmists had thought, to target population centers in Europe or even North America, but instead were aimed at targeting the United States strategic military base at Diego Garcia. The advisor’s statement appears to confirm this latter interpretation.

Moreover, while the advisor's statement may infer an Iranian strike capability, more likely it may serve to indicate an IRGC-ASF design intent for more capable ballistic missiles, in terms of enhanced range and accuracy.

In the event of war with the United States, disruptions--even temporary ones--as well as negatively impacting American military prestige, would no doubt form the crux of Iranian asymmetric warfare. It should be assumed military thinkers in Iran conceive of the base at Diego Garcia in terms of fulfilling such criteria,  as a second-strike target of war.

"Guess What?" Iran's replica carrier intended for military training - IRGC-N commander.

"Guess What?" Iran's replica carrier intended for military training - IRGC-N commander.HT: UskowiOnIran.

According to Iranian armed forces media outlet Defa Press, IRGC-N Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi publicly stated that the purpose of Iran's "scale replica" USN Nimitz class aircraft carrier is for use in future training exercises involving IRGC-ASF, IRGC-N Marine, IRIN and IRIAF forces.

As for previous Iranian media claims that the replica carrier's purpose is that of a "movie prop," the IRGC-N commander dismissed such reports as being "meaningless."Hmmmm.....So much for the movie prop......'Pearl Harbor'

Iranian Media: Replica US Aircraft Carrier Just A Movie Prop.

Iranian Media: Replica US Aircraft Carrier Just A Movie Prop.(Fars).

A replica of a US aircraft carrier spotted near the coast of Iran is a set being built for a movie which will display the US Navy warships' downing of an Iranian passenger plane in 1988, the Iranian media said.

The CNN said last week that Iranians are building a replica of a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
Satellite photos showed what looked like one of the US Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, complete with planes, rising from Iran's Gachin shipyard, near the port of Bandar Abbas.

But the Iranian media said on Sunday that it was "part of the decor and stage settings" of a movie being made by Iranian director Nader Talebzadeh on the 1988 shooting down of an Iran Air civilian plane by the USS Vincennes.

"The issue has turned into a good excuse for another wave of hype against Iran," said the Iranian Alef news website. "Without any proof or real basis, the western media have jumped again to paint a negative picture of Iran."

At the height of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran, the USS Vincennes in the Persian Gulf blew up Iranian airliner 655, killing all 290 citizens on board, including nearly 70 children.

Iranian Airbus A300 plane was making a routine flight from the country's southern port city of Bandar Abbas to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes launched two surface-to-air missiles, downing Iran Air Flight 655.
The American officials had later claimed that the USS Vincennes had mistaken the Iranian passenger plane for an F-14 fighter. The claim was later proved to be unfounded by more evidence.

Although Iran filed against the US in the United Nations and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), both bodies adopted a politicized attitude and declined to follow up the case legally, they only bothered to sympathize with the bereaved families of the victims.

Iranians mark July the 3rd each year by showering the site of the disaster with flowers.Hmmm......Makes you wonder why didn't they just build a 'copy' of the USS Vincennes?

Hmmm.........Iran Is Building Mock-UP Aircraft Carrier.

Hmmm.........Iran Is Building Mock-UP Aircraft Carrier.(UOI).

The New York Times reported today that Iran is building a non-functioning mock-up of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln at its Gachin shipyard, near Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf. Times said U.S. intelligence analysts studying satellite photos of Iranian military installations first noticed the vessel rising from the shipyard last summer.

The barge-type structure has the same distinctive shape and style of the Nimitz-class carriers, as well as the Nimitz’s number 68 neatly painted in white near the bow. Mock aircraft can be seen on the flight deck.

Based on our observations, this is not a functioning aircraft carrier; it’s a large barge built to look like an aircraft carrier,” said Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. “We’re not sure what Iran hopes to gain by building this. If it is a big propaganda piece, to what end?” (The New York Times, 20 March)

Iran has previously used barges as targets for missile firings during training exercises. It was not clear when the mock-up will take its maiden voyage. Navy officials told the Times that it will presumably be shipped by rail on tracks that run through the shipyard, to its destiny in the Persian Gulf just a few hundred yards away. Hmmmm.....Reminds me of the Japanese...before Pearl harbor.

"Run Silent - Run Deep" - IDF Sees Steep Rise in Submarine Operations.

"Run Silent - Run Deep" - IDF Sees Steep Rise in Submarine Operations.HT: Matzav.
The IDF’s submarine fleet has seen a sharp increase in the number and duration of its at-sea operations, with a special focus on Lebanon, according to a senior Israel Navy officer.
Some of the deployments lasted several weeks and took the submarines thousands of kilometers from Israel.
Israel has bought its top-of-the-line Dolphin submarines from Germany, with two new subs to be delivered in the second half of 2014, the INS Tanin and INS Rahav.

The new submarines have engines that don’t require surfacing to acquire new air supplies.
