Video footage has surfaced that appears to show Yazidi girls being dragged from their families by masked and heavily-armed Islamic State (Isis) fighters. The footage, which takes place in an unknown apartment building presumably in Daesh-held land in either Syria or Iraq, shows a scrum of Yazidi prisoners and IS gunmen separating women from men. It is feared that the girls are being taken to be sold into sexual slavery by the terrorist group.

The apartment building is surrounded by IS fighters and the group's distinctive flag can be seen hanging from a balcony. There is no information about where or when the video was recorded. Read the full story here.

Vian Dakhil spoke with Politico on Wednesday and explained that as many as 2,200 Yazidi women and girls have been kidnapped by IS and are being used a sex slaves. Another 420,000 Yazidis are living in refugee camps, which includes thousands of orphans who have no home.

Dakhil shared one particularly horrifying story, where IS fighters forced a starving mother to eat the meat of her own child, or at least told her so.

"One of the mothers calls me … she said 'for two days the ISIS doesn't give me any food' and they separated her children. One of them is 3 years and another is 5 years, after two days they give her rice with meat. After she's eating, she tell her this is your boy — 3 years," Dakhil said.

"She tells me please, I can't, I don't know what can I do — I'm eating my son. This is what happened with those woman under ISIS control and nobody cares."

Another mother was forced to watch her 9-year-old daughter being raped to death, Dakhil shared in a separate account.

Yazidis, Christians, and other minorities have suffered greatly under the rule of the self-proclaimed Islamic Caliphate, which has captured signification territory across Iraq and Syria.

"We stayed on our feet while they looked for the ones who were pretty, those with a nice body, or pretty eyes, or pretty hair, or a pretty face. They would take them, rape them, and pass them on to others."

This is one of the terrifying memories that 28-year-old Ghazala, a Yazidi woman from Sinjar in Iraq's Kurdistan region, has of her ordeal in Islamic State captivity.

Ghazala and her younger sister Narin (their names have been changed for security reasons) were held prisoner in the extremist group's de facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa, for nine months.

The IS gunmen in Badush took Ghazala, her sister and the rest of the younger Yazidi women to Raqqa in Syria.

It was there, in IS's de facto capital, that their captors began selling the Yazidi women and girls as sex slaves to other militants, including foreign fighters.

Ghazala recalls how her fellow captives were sold as chattel to IS militants who showed up in groups to haggle over the human goods.

"Every hour some IS men came -- two, three, four, five, six, seven of them," Ghazala says. "They opened the door carrying big sticks. They told us to stand up. They beat any of us who didn't stand up."

When a militant chose a girl he was interested in, he would drag her to the bathroom to "examine" her before handing over cash to pay for her.

"They would strip her and if they liked her they bought her," she remembers.

The gunmen were particularly interested in the youngest and prettiest girls, whom they raped and then passed them on to other gunmen, Ghazala says. Read the full story here.

As they swept through large parts of northern Iraq, fighters with the armed group calling itself “Islamic State” (IS)1 systematically targeted members of non-Arab and non-Sunni Muslim communities, as well as Sunni Muslims who oppose them.

But even within the context of its persecution of minority groups and Shi’a Muslims, the IS has singled out the Yezidi minority, notably its women and children, for particularly brutal treatment.

In August 2014, IS fighters abducted hundreds, possibly thousands, of Yezidi men, women and children who were fleeing the IS takeover from the Sinjar region, in the north-west of the country. Hundreds of the men were killed and others were forced to convert to Islam under threat of death.

Younger women and girls, some as young as 12, were separated from their parents and older relatives and sold, given as gifts or forced to marry IS fighters and supporters.

Many have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment, including rape and other forms of sexual violence, and have likewise been pressured into converting to Islam.

Up to 300 of those abducted, mostly women and children, have managed to escape IS captivity, while the majority continue to be held in various locations in Iraq and in parts of Syria controlled by the IS. They are moved frequently from place to place. Some are able to communicate with their displaced relatives in areas outside IS control but the fate and whereabouts of others are not known.

Some of the women and girls who have escaped IS captivity, as well as some of those who remain captive, have given harrowing accounts to Amnesty International of the torture and abuses they have suffered.

Rape and other forms of torture and sexual violence, hostage taking, arbitrary deprivation of liberty and forcing persons to act against their religious beliefs constitute war crimes. Some of the violations and abuses documented in this report also constitute crimes against humanity, including torture, rape and sexual slavery.

The IS continues to hold hundreds of captives, including children. Any party, in Iraq or outside, with influence over the IS should use that influence to secure the release of these captives and put an end to abductions, forced marriages, rape and other abuses.

Iraq's only ethnic Êzidî (Yazidi) member of parliament says that the human rights situation in her country is "deteriorating," with Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) gang militants kidnapping, raping, and selling Êzidî women.

"They are still without any shelter. They are sleeping on the streets. The situation is not good and the winter is advancing, and it's raining, actually, in Iraq now. So the situation is deteriorating," legislator Viyan Daxil told RFE/RL in an October 8 telephone interview from Iraq's Kurdish region. Daxil, who has been cited by U.S. President Barack Obama, was named the winner of the 2014 Anna Politkovskaya Award on October 6 by the organization Reach All Women in War. The award, named after the murdered Russian journalist, honors women working to help those trapped in conflict.

'Êzidî women are targeted'

The lawmaker, who is currently recovering from injuries she suffered in an August 12 helicopter crash on Mount Shengal (Sinjar) in South Kurdistan, said that while ISIS militants have forced Christian women from their homes, Êzidî women often suffer worse fates. "Only Êzidî women are kidnapped. We don't know, actually, why exactly the Êzidî women are targeted," she said.

'They are taken to be raped, and they are selling them $150 for a girl'

MP Daxil says that of the more than 500,000 Êzidis in Iraq, some 25,000 Êzidî girls have been abducted by ISIS militants. "We don't know exactly where all of them are, but some are kept at various prisons here, still in Iraq, and some have been taken to Syria, and some are in Mosul," she said. "They are taken to be raped, and they are selling them -- $150 for a girl."

Call on international community to save women and children

Daxil called on the international community to step in to help the plight of the Kurdish religious and ethnic minority that has faced religious persecution for centuries and that has been dubbed "devil worshippers" by some Muslims. 

"I ask every government -- not only here -- to take some action to save these people here because the situation is really bad. What is happening here cannot be solved by the Iraqi government only," she said. Daxil gained international attention in August after making an impassioned plea to the Iraqi parliament about Êzidîs trapped on Mount Sinjar, which was surrounded at the time by ISIS militants. She called it genocide.

'I am speaking here in the name of humanity'

"My family is being butchered, just like all Iraqis are being killed. … And today, the Êzidîs are being slaughtered. Brothers, away from all the political disputes, we want humanitarian solidarity. I am speaking here in the name of humanity. Save us! Save us!" she told lawmakers on August 5. The speaker of parliament interrupted her speech, while others shushed her emotional address, after which she collapsed.

'Ten-year-old Êzidî girls are being raped'

Daxil broke both legs and several ribs in an August 12 helicopter crash on Mount Sinjar. The pilot of the aircraft, which was carrying about 35 people, was killed in the accident, while "New York Times" reporter Alissa Rubin was injured. Daxil said that she plans to return to parliament once she is fully healed.

She also asked Western Muslim women who are supporting ISIS militants -- an estimated 30 of whom have actually traveled to Iraq or Syria -- to look at what the group, which is also known as ISIS, is doing to Êzidî women.

"Every girl in the West who is supporting ISIS should put herself in any local girl's shoes and see what she has gone through. Twelve-year-old girls are being raped. Ten-year-old girls are being raped. I would like to ask women supporting ISIS, if she was in their situation, what would she feel. If she was from your family, what would you feel?" Daxil said.

"This girl could be your daughter, she could be your sister, she could be your neighbor,” she continued.
